  • Deadwood is arguably one of the best western TV shows of its time and some would even make the argument that it’s the best western TV show of all time. However, it only ran for three seasons on HBO, which came as a disappointment to its loyal fanbase.
Deadwood had everything you wanted from a western TV show. It follows the birth of a town in South Dakota and all the politics, violence, and formation of laws that come with building a town in the 1870s.
The series also had riveting performances by its lead actors Timothy Olyphant and Ian McShane. So, why did the show not last for more seasons? Here is the real reason they canceled Deadwood.

If it wasn't for Deadwood, my life would be totally different. My wife and I were in an old mining town called Barkerville in BC, Canada staying at the Bed And Breakfast. A fellow guest mentioned that Barkerville reminded her so much of the new Deadwood series. We asked about the series and ended up buying the first season and were hooked. We went to Deadwood the following year and the year after that. The second year we come back through Cody, Wyoming to go through Yellowstone National Park. We fell in love with Cody, and legally immigrated to the States and now we have lived there four 10 years, thanks to a series called Deadwood. Funny how life works.

No question, it was really on it's way to becoming the greatest TV drama ever. The crazy thing is that many people still put it in the top 5 or top 10 and it was cancelled after only 3 seasons. It was always going to be more of a critics/journalist favorite over a popular show because of the complicated dialogue and characters with a lack of action. It's a slow build show that focuses on character and I just couldn't get enough it. It's definitely one of a kind and Al is one of the best characters in tv history.

It’s so damn frustrating watching the series finale and knowing there wouldn’t be anything left, because so many of the characters stories were left a mystery. I’m going to watch the movie tomorrow, and hope that they somehow reach a satisfying conclusion for many of the beloved characters. I just don’t know how they’ll do it all in under two hours. To this day Deadwood is as cinematic as television shows ever got with dialogue in any one episode rivaling anything today, it was a crime we were robbed of such a sublime TV, I got a copy of it (season one) from a friend and was half watching it thinking this ain't my thing until Al Swearegen appeared and stole the show in what was imo the greatest anti hero bar Snake Plissken ever put to film, I'm 37 now and it's the ONLY TV show I've watched more than once, way more than once and I might just start it again, I can now watch them in my own 'cinema' on my oculus VR headset, in fact that's exactly what I'm going to do, it was cool to get the ending but it was bittersweet, Milch no longer at his peak nor the cast but they gave what little time it ran a good go, I never gave up on an ending, I bought it on DVD then Blu Ray and digital, if they could remaster it in 4k I would get that also but not quite sure if those San Francisco c########$ are able to swindle it, best TV show ever made, best written, best acted, best set design, best everything, if only we got the two 2 hour specials but Deadwood is dead now, long may it continue to enthrall, they missed an opportunity to do an E.B Farnham spin off, imagine Faulty towers with Mayor E.B and Richardson.

This is inaccurate - I was in Business Affairs at HBO at the time & worked on Deadwood. HBO very much wanted a fourth season of Deadwood - it was Milch (who is an erratic man who struggles with his addictions) - who told HBO he was going to work on John from Cincinnati - he told HBO the 'other' writers could carry on with a fourth season. The reason it came out as an HBO decision was to preserve the relationship with Milch. I was there, I heard it directly from those involved in negotiating the deals - Milch was leaving and HBO felt he was necessary for the project. HBO ate the anger and blame, because that's what studios do.

Deadwood series creator David Milch has said, “I am deeply disappointed by the way things turned out. (HBO) felt like they had to make a choice, and this is how they chose. I know they tried to work it out, and I tried to work it out with them.” It’s been confirmed that HBO offered to greenlight a small six-episode order of the groundbreaking drama but Milch, who has had bad experiences with so-called “short-order renewals,” rejected the offer. “For my part, I did not want to accept a short order. We couldn’t have done the work the way we wanted. I didn’t want to limp home. My old man used to say, ‘Never go anyplace where you’re only tolerated,'” relates Milch. One source has reported that Milch had already plotted the fourth (presumed final) season episodes.

I know what Milch has said, I remember being furious we at HBO had to shoulder the blame - but Milch had an overall deal with us and to preserve that deal, we had to accept that blame. I'm not there anymore, ao it doesn't matter if I say what actually happened - I even ran into Milch when I was working for another production company and we had a nice chat - I like him - but I know what happened directly from the people involved so believe what you want.

Comparing it to e.g. Game of Thrones from 2011+ is just silly 😕
Milch wasn't easily controlable for them, so in that sense it was most likely rough getting anywhere with negotiations of any sort. And that definitely lead to Deadwood stopping.
