2:30 the “extra” he is referring to is Garret Dillahunt who is uncredited AFAIK. But I think it’s great he got to come back to Deadwood!! (Even for a brief moment)
When watching I had to replay that scene because I recognized the voice and eyes of that extra. I knew it was the murderer of Bill but I didn't know his real name or character name. Awesome that he was brought back into this movie because he was such a great side story to the series.
The show was one of my like top 3 all time favorites and I was sooo frustrated it ended the way it did, I was so excited to learn they were making a movie of it and seriously it was great! You guys killed it seriously!
I've had the Deadwood movie saved for years, but wasn't going to watch it until re-watching the show (for the first time since it aired, it's been so long, I'd forgotten much). It knocks the modern 'prestige' shows out of the water. So often with recent shows I'm baffled at why people act the way they are, sometimes which side they're on, what their motivations are, and of course the tedious habit of giving each and every backstory a tragic backstory (the problem being they make them EXPLICIT instead of implicit). Watching Deadwood, it's incredible that so much is implied or hinted/alluded, there's a respect for the audience that's missing so often now. It says a lot that Deadwood can throw dialog at us so complex that often you don't even know exactly what is being said, but you're never confused as to why a given character does what they do. Try watching 'wheel of time' or 'the witcher' and say as much, or, god forbid, the execrable 'game of thrones'. Oh great, more banal dialog where people sit & talk like a bunch of account managers in a second hand car dealership. Yawn. Flipping great to finally be able to rewatch the show, knowing there's a movie at the end that doesn't leave us hanging. Bravo Mr. Milch, and damnation upon the HBO galaxy brains who canned this.
Well put. Although the movie didn't have nearly enough time to do the old show justice in any way. That just wasn't possible in only 105 minutes. Even for Milch 🙁
i just posted the same thing... Tim knew. There's an interview where he laughs because Dillahunt was on the call sheet listed as Drunk #2 and Tim was ribbing Garrett on how he didn't even get listed as Drunk #1 on the extras callsheet.
I hope they release a good behind the scenes documentary on this movie. I want to see how things came together, the cast reuniting for the first time in 13 years. I am sure everyone was pretty emotional and in awe when these amazing actors and actresses stepped back into these characters. Seeing Ian and Timothy in costume likely gave people chills like when Han and Chewie stepped on set on the Millennium Falcon again. Something nobody thought would ever happen again. Al Swearengen is one of the greatest characters/villains ever.
Agreed. The movie was fantastic, but when it got to the end, it was like re-opening an old wound. I remember how I felt when the series was cancelled. Heartbreaking.
