  • Merrow Sewing Machine Company, formally known as The Merrow Machine Co, produces a number a excellent overlock and crochet stitch machines. The company actually invented the overlock machine in the 1800s and the business is still family run. This is one of the very few machines that are manufactured in the United States. The quality if VERY high and replacement parts for machines dating all the way back to 1925 are still available.
This particular model, the 18-E, was designed to sew a flat crochet stitch for blankets and other items. The stitch width is adjustable from 3/8" to 1/2" and the stitch length is adjustable via cams from 4spi to 10spi. The machine uses 5/2 yarn and is designed to run 1,000 - 1,200 stitches per minute, which is about as fast as a vintage domestic machine (Pfaff 130, Bernina Record 730, Singer 301A, etc.)
The footprint for this machine is small at 3.75"x9". You can use a custom built table or adapt for use in a standard industrial table via an insert like what I made in the video.

Hey sarge, I have an 18e and want to change the cam. I am getting about 4 stitches per inch with the cam that is installed, labeled 617. I have some other cams that are labeled 8, so 8 stitches per inch. But there is a difference in the cams, the 617 is kind of oval as opposed to the round cam labeled 8. Do you know will the 8 work on the machine. My concern is the different overall shape. Thank you, hope you are still there.

Hi! Any chance you’d be willing to show a video of the 18e being threaded? I don’t have a manual for mine and am trying to get acquainted with it. Thanks!

New they're ~$2,500, used you're looking at around $1,500 from a dealer and perhaps less if you can find them from private parties. It's pretty uncommon to see these being sold by private parties though (on eBay or CL, etc).
