  • How do you decide when to run your aquarium lights and for how long? There are many answers out there; here are my thoughts based on my experiences. I'll be applying these as I change the lighting schedule for my own tanks over the next couple of weeks.

Great Video and advise. I'm pushing it a bit as I am running mine for 10hrs, However in two stages and co2 2 hours before lights on and an hour before lights off. Growth is fantastic and phenomenal. Colour is beautiful in the pink, yellow, red and orange plants. Keep up the good advise.

The smallest fish in this video are Ember tetras and reed tetras. They both stay under 1 inch (2.5 cm).

Thank you for a great video. This might be a silly question. I run my lights around 8 hours, but i live in the far north where here is indirect light 24/7 may to August. Is this indirect daylight ok for the fish and the plants?

That’s an interesting question. I’m not sure if that would have any major effects. Fish do go through a rest cycle at night, as do plants. If you do want to have some sort of day/night cycle for them during that time of the year, you could put a blanket over the tank.

I have artificial plant and other accessory in my small tank. So how long do I really need to keep on the light because I am a beginner. I have guppies and mollies.

I would shoot for between 6-7 hours at the most to avoid the possibility of algae outbreaks.

6 to 8 hours a day is optimum also direct sunlight for about 1 to 1.5 hours is best for plant to absorb all natural spectrum

I usually open the window in the morning so my tank could have natural light. Is it okay if I turn on the lights from 6:30 pm where sun sets up to midnight? Roughly 6 hrs of light until I turn it off

As long as you don’t start seeing algae issues spring up, it should be fine. During certain times of the year, my nano tanks get morning sunlight and the lights come in later that afternoon.
