I hope you guys would grow betta business to near by country like Canada â„ïž I really want to buy your betta.
All the dislikes are from the companies promoting and selling the super expensive lights for the aquarium.
Xd
I personally disagree with the idea that aquarium lights are for our enjoyment only. I definitely agree that having lights on makes an aquarium look better. However, like humans Iâve observed that fish too have a circadian rhythm so when I turn off my aquarium lights, whether it be freshwater or marine, my fish will go into their holes to sleep or float in the open water column and they either wonât come out or youâll barely see them at all until I turn them back on. I think lights in an aquarium help to regulate a fishes circadian rhythm. That is, if you switch them on and off at roughly the same time. Love your content guys, keep it up!
Same here I turn my lights off and all my fish just swim to there sleeping spots
@@vorsntioedits301 It definitely makes sense too. In coral reefs, it appears like a desert at nighttime. I assume evolutionarily speaking itâs because mating behaviour for most fish doesnât occur during the day so there isnât anything to do, most fish arenât equipped with nighttime vision and of course predators hunt at nigh so hiding is the most viable option for most fish.
Canât believe I hadnât subscribed yet. Such a relief to hear your fish were holding on for this long.
Finally an honest lightning fish deal. Yes I like to keep my tanks on timers, and I hate sunlight light bulbs. Everything is going led now. Old florescent bulbs are getting hard to find. My Red devil does not like the light on. But her room has plenty of natural light.
I don't know much about amphilophus cichlids but parachromis dovii are much more aggressive under blue lights
can i use two 5watt led lights in my planted fish tank instead of a single 10watt light?
will those 2 work same as a 10watt light?
I REALLY LOVE THEIR VIDEOS AND ALSO I REALLY, REALLY LOVE HOW THIS COUPLE DO THIS BEAUTIFUL HOBBY TOGETHER,,, CONGRATULATIONS đ
Another great video. I've actually had the pleasure to see bettas in the wild. While they are in shallow waters, that water is covered with a thick layer of floating plants. So, they don't get a lot of light in the wild either. My other plants don't like it much, but I cover my aquarium surface with duckweed and frogbit. My betta loves it!
Thanks for all the info! Helps me a lot, Hope to catch you in the live stream next Thursday!
The main reason we keep fish is to enjoy their beauty. An aquarium, imho, absolutely needs a light. Tried lightless tanks and tanks with different types of light. Best colours on the fish come out in a tank where the lights turn on and off on a schedule, fishâll adapt to light accordingly. Of course donât get a super blinding light.

Thanks John and Lisa!! Great topic and discussion and really helps me!!!
I appreciate y'all's knowledge and experience so much!!
PS I haven't made it back through yet to see if I can meet you guys, I had to rehome my aquariums because of the move... But on the bright side my family said they would get me one of your phenomenal bettas đđȘđđđżđđż
Thank you for this. 2 out of my 9 aquariums every time I turn the lights on they freak out and go hide. So I find myself not turning it on cause i don't want to stress them out. The room they are in gets plenty of natual light.
I am keeping some fathead minnows that I am going to use for bait and this happens every single time I turn on the light on the thank they are being held in.... needless to say, I leave the light off on it all the time
I found my barbs doing this in my 20L and I basically did some exposure therapy, where I placed extra light on the side of the tank where they hid and I would do this for about 30 to 40 minutes only. Then turning those extra lights off will make the fish feel less intensity. Now my barbs have no problem with the regular aquarium light.
@@pyramid992 so smart bro
Love that you're talking about what life is like from the INSIDE of the aquarium. The fish have to live there, I have lushly planted tanks and only turn the lights on for a few hrs of the day while I'm enjoying my tanks.
Great video John and Lisa! Thx for teaching me so much.
You guys are the best, i just get into this hobby a month ago and you guys teach me everything i need to know. Thank you very much
Thanks for lot of information that help me safe a lot of energy ! thanks !
I found a 48" Fluval Aquasky light for 40% off at my local Fish store. I scooped it up for my 75gal Mbuna cichlid tank and they seem to love the natural day night cycle. And I love how the new light seemingly makes their colors pop a lot more than my old standard light.
Oh and I don't have much ambient light so without a tank light it would be almost un viewable.
KG sells the best bettas ever , I got my alien from them and he is happy. Without lights
That entry disclaimer is crucial, this is a fish only discussion...
My coral tank needs a very good light, and my planted tank has descent ones too (though no where near as strong as the marine light).
This topic depends on the Biology in the tank. This discussion changes dramatically when you introduce sensitive photosynthetic organisms.
But, in the context you represented this: Totally agree, nice video.
I also like how you framed the difference between high-light and low-light aquarium plants, as most of the hobby's current list of plants are low-to-moderate-light plants. Very few are true high-light plants.
You made me very happy with your video on lighting. I donât really like the bright lights on the fish I like to see them in there natural habitat of sorts, as close as we can get in a fish tank. Thank you so much for your videos Iâll keep watching. I was in the hobby about 40 years ago and everything has changed dramatically. I donât even know if I understand about keeping face anymore but Iâm trying to learn again and you have helped me a great deal. Thanks again
I have been "fishering" ( is that a word ? haha) for over 30 years and find your vids informative, entertaining and educational. Currently have 2, 125g acrylic all male cichlid tanks...Maybe some cichlids in your future ? Thanks and keep the vids coming...From sunny South Carolina...
I just got your LED light for a 5 gallon... it's great! (The old one fell into the aquarium and never worked well after.)
Thank you so much for this information I enjoyed it very much
Thanks you two. Great info.
Love the pics and videos of your bettas. If I didn't already have mine, I would buy one from you... Right now I have 5 tanks.. if I set up another small one, I'll be buying one. My current one is a dark blue with some red & purple. I think he is a double comb if I remember correcly. Beautiful boy. He's in a 10 gallon with some ember tetras.
Dude! Great vid and the green sheen on your head is priceless!
I just noticed that lol
Another video chocked full of good information đ Thanks John and Lisa, y'all are so much funđđ
hey any of u ever tried a led halogen floodlight for fish tanks?
I donât use light because I donât have plants and the ambient lighting is enough for me. I do keep one tank by the window but shade it slightly for part of the day.
bettas are often found in muddy pools where sunlight are restrictive.
I beg to differ. Bettas prefer the weedy edges of ponds where the light is not as strong. The water is not muddy. There are videos that show this clearly.
My daily routine is turning on the lights in the morning and then turning them off at night. Simple.
Great info, I learned something today. My tank is planted and honestly, I keep my light on for 14 hours a day on a timer. They come on at 0800 in the morning, and go off at 2100. I have two black racer nerite snails, so algae is never a problem in my tank âșïž

In bettas they actually love dark water, indian almond leaves would be great it promotes coloration and health of betta. You can have them in dim light or natural light like in the morning. Just the right amount of light to see the fish.
Thank you for this honest helpful information đ đ
This has been super helpful. Thank you very much!

Hello I have a question so I just recently set up my 10 gallon glass aquarium In my bedroom now my room has blackout curtains so not that much light comes In also I have my tank against the wall not near the windows my question Is would it be ok If I left my aquarium light on only at night and kept it off during the day I don't have any live plans In my tank and I plan on keeping zebra danios
This is good to know. Thanks for the info
2 years on and still relevant! I do miss the intro and the music, as well as the background music that has changed in the newer content but forward and onwards I guess :') cheers from a fan in India.
Another thing to realize about lights is how much heat they produce. I have leds but they still put out a lot of heat which can make the tanks run warmer.
Thanks for doing a video on freshwater Lighting!
I talk to all my fish, call them names and that really seems to help them all calm down⊠since the instant the light goes on itâs like someone flashing the lights on while sleeping, owie!!!!
I keep a lot of Severums and Geos and I only have my LEDâs on for about 3-4 hours in each tank daily, and they arenât kept to bright at all. I mostly put them on at night to observe them, and when I turn the lights on they absolutely know itâs time to eat. However since both tanks are fairly close to a very large picture window and from sunrise to sunset they are getting a good amount of light throughout the day. By the time 10-11pm comes around they are fairly relaxed and ready for sleepđđŒ
Love the channel keep it up
Coming back to watch this. Thank you!You can call your self a bunch of names....but you are humble as well señor,good things happen to the humble.
I use a Fluval Plant 3 light on my 50 gallon but only run it at 25% maximum. My fish and Plants thrive. It's been like that for over a year.
I love your videos guys keep it up. Iâve been in the hobby for years but now that Ive moved to Arizona I canât make water changes as much cause the water coming outta the tap is hot like 90 degrees hot. So what do you guys recommend me to do? All Iâve been doing is topping the tanks off.
Are you able to get a barrel or trash can and fill it? That way you can let the water get to room temperature and siphon it into your tanks as needed.
Iv not had a light on my tanks for years I see them fine xx
Can you do a tips and tricks for setting up a planted/ self sustaining tank? Or tips for substrates to use with live plant tanks etc?
I make a aquarium with java fern and anubias but the water is hard water and I put 2 Indian almond leaf for tannin and for care and heater , light , spong filter is it good for betta fish and the light is 3w aquarium light and does the light stress my betta fish and my fish tank is 5 gallon . Plz reply đ
thank you so much. this helps!
My female Betta and 7 Harlequin Rasboras seem to actually prefer the lights on. It has dozens of color combinations and I can adjust the brightness enough that I can make it super dim to keep the fish comfortable. Also, the second I turn the lights off, my Betta starts chasing all the Rasboras and stressing them out. I have plenty of areas in my tank for them to hide and get away from the light, but I can tell they get noticeably stressed when I turn the light off. Debating if I should even just separate them and put the Betta in her own tank.
There are lots of fish that display their boldest colors when exposed to brighter light than you will get from a low light area
There was a guy the other day in one of the aquarium groups Iâm in on fb that was having an algae issue, I told them to do a 3 day black out and he was worried about his fish being effected, and I reassured them that their fish will be fine.
I love catching Bata's on my farm in Thailand. When I'm there.
I would agree that lights are only needed for planted tanks and for our viewing pleasure. I have 3 Bettas and they seem more mellow with the lights off.
Well not a must, I think the cycle is better then not having it. Fish react to it, and even us humans like it. Love your videos
I know this video has been up for months now, but I just saw it today. My question is, about the submersible pumps that has RGB light built on it, is that ok for the fishes? It's not that bright at night when the main light is off, its just that, there is no switch for the RGB to turn off. Its like having a small night light. Is it ok for my fishes (tetras, danios, angels) or could this stress them out? They seem happy at very active whenever I'm around and when its feeding time as well.
Love the channel. Keep up the good video's
Just got my first tank every is set up and ready for my first fish it's a 29gallon tank & when I went to the pet store just to look around at the different fish a sales person recommend I get a bala shark they are a good fish but I was they can get big . If so what are sum decent size fish for a 29 gallon?

Good stuff, as always! All of my tanks are heavily planted, so lights are a must here.

Hey, i have an 8inch silver arowana, and it has gill curl. Can you help me to find a cure !!
My tanks are in my dining room, with windows on 2 walls. I rarely turn on my tank lights. My fish are just fine, breeding and dripping fry regularly. In the Fall and Winter I'll likely have to turn my lights on more due to less sunlight. But right now, my Guppies and my Hornwort are just fine with the ambient sunlight in the room. And I actually think the ambient sunlight shows my Guppies' colors better.
My Ottos are SO DRAMATIC when I turn on the lights, and I have plenty of hiding spots for them but they still tend to go crazy lol
Question. I have a new small aquarium (30 litres, this is 9 gallons) with incorporated 3 W led light. Is this enough? Or need to add more light? If yes, how?
the light is for me, for my Oscar tank (I think it's a 150, it came with the house) is in the wall between the living room and kitchen, so it's an aquarium light, kitchen light and living room light. Depending on the time of year, it's on two or five hours.
You all motivated me in starting fish room in just 15
Start with one tank and do it well before you move to multiple tanks.
@@dt4676 I am currently having 20+ tanks from 20 g to 300g tanks
The one with the *not direct sunlight can cause algae* ive been thinking about it ever since, been noticing my aquarium gets algae more on the front side more compared to the backside which is faced against the wall, glad thats confirmed for me now.
Anyways about the lights do lights make some fishes active or make them do there normal routine something like a Day and night cycle for us,
I know youâve mentioned alot about fishes not caring about the light, but my Blood parrot here always Starts roaming around and it loves to fiddle around the side of the aquarium where it can see its reflection, it always hides whenever its dark, and you can totally see it Laying at its side cause it loved to hide in some tight spaces for some reason, tho i guess the only reason why it roams when theres light is it can see its reflection to interact with đđđ
I am from Canada and my fish arenât eating and I found out they have internal parasites. Since I am from Canada I canât get any medication like general cure or anything. Do you have any advice?
can i use two 5watt led lights in my planted fish tank instead of a single 10watt light?
will those 2 work same as a 10watt light?
I bought my aquarium with a 'moonlight' setting (unintentionally). My tank looks better at night. Nice and dark but with a dim blue light. Surely lighting affects your fish's activity as mine slow down when dark. My shrimp are near the window with just natural light. They wake up and go to sleep with the chickens.
If you keep tinfoils with other fish like oscars and parrot fish, light is a necessity. Tinfoils as they grow start splasing water and they do that when they dont get minimum hours of lighting. In my tank a minimum of 2 hrs in the morning and 2 hrs at night keeps the tinfoils calm and they dont splash water.
Also I think, the light might do something to the aquarium bacteria and algae.
All the goldfish in my daughter's tank turned white. The tank was in a windowless room with no aquarium light.
Well imagine what it's doing to your daughters health too
@@michaelgallacher4800 it's not in her bedroom. It was in one of the basement rooms. She does have a 65 gallon tank in her bedroom, though!
well just imagine most fish that live in caves or in the pitch dark lose their color if there's no light
Question for anyone! I have some terrarium equipment formally used for lizards, a lot of it is natural wood or some plastics. Would it be ok to use in a fish tank? even if I have to cleanse or do some process to make it safe, or should I not bother.
Bettas may live in shallower water, but itâs the shallow water that is packed tight with vegetation⊠Grasses, rices, sedge, water spinach, you name them. These plants makes bettaâs world quite dim almost all the time.
hi, quick question on actinic leds (453), its a current marine fushion light, 12k/453 actinic, on a 20 g bichardi tank, just put it back on my tank after watching this.. i had a exotic panorama pro 8000k, super bright.. i had a lil algae.. ok, a lot and was cleaning the rock work every 3 to 5 days, after watching this, now i know why.. now online i read about some say actinic causes algae, some say it doesn't, which is it, does or doesn't?? and yes, i subscribed, long ago *S.. i have to tell you, my brichardi's really pop with this current light.
I have have colored low light for my tank, and the guppies are very mellow and all over the tank. Only at feeding I turn the normal light on for about 1 hr.
I have got a marine tank with some corals (size:70x70x215cm) and not happy about the light! Would you recommend a good high-end brand?
heaters too, not everyone needs a heater, not even winter, because it all depends in their home temp, just get a thermometer.
Yes, we need lights as our fish and aquariums look great under really good lighting.
hey any of u ever tried a led halogen floodlight for fish tanks?
My Oscar tank is in the basement where there are no windows, so the room is totally dark. Shouldnât I turn on the tank light in the morning and shut it off at night to simulate the cycle of light in nature? I read that fishâs health can be affected negatively if the tank is totally dark most of the day. In other words, it affects their growth hormone, mood, brain and nervous system. Or can I just turn on the tank light in the late afternoon when I get home from work and have it on for 3-4 hours until bedtime?
@shane kearsley I have one large Oscar cichlid in a 100 gallon tank by himself.
I only run the lights when I get home from work till I go to bed. Longer on the weekend if Iâm home. I like to see my fish! Fish in the wild get sunlight.
What do you think about using a Plant Grow light?
I'm talking like a 2000w light?
I was just wondering about lighting myself. I have a 29 gallon in my bedroom and I leave my lights on 12 hrs a day, however, at night Iâll be on my laptop roughly 12 feet away up late. Will this laptop light ruin my fishâs sleep routine or is it dark enough for them to relax?
Nope... but 12 hours is quite long... is there natural light in the room
My lights are on 8 hours, and i do the same thing with my laptop as you. Sometimes I come close to the tank with a flashlight and my betta is already sleeping, so I think your fish will be ok
@@thedanceshack16
hey! Yes it is within a foot of a window on the same wall but the shades are always up, a bit of natural light seeps through. Perhaps I should go down to 10 hours do you think?
@@raulalvarez7862 thank you!
I use very low dimmed lights at night as I have Bala Sharks, a Paroon Shark, several Indirescent sharks, Cichlids and feel some low lighting will protect the smaller fish from being hunted⊠correct..? In fact purple / blue lights at the lowest of the dimmer switch
I've got one light out at the moment and it's driving me nuts!
Same here I hate it!
Walmart. 5000 K under the cabinet lights. I use them on all my planted tanks. $8 to $10 dollars a piece. Work great. Have to use two on 55 gal and up. No need to buy a $100 dollar light. Also I want a certain amount of algae in my tanks depending on the fish I have in them. I may have 300 plates in a tank and that love to eat algae. The babyâs hide in it.
Plus the bettas natural water has tannins which minimizes the sunlight âïžđright ?
Thank You
is there a list of lower light live plants I can get in the UK?
Aside from Anubias which other plants do well in low light? And are there any fast growing plants that do well in low light? (For filtration purposes)
I'm having an issue with my 10 Celestichthys Choprae. I got them about a month ago and WOW they are gorgeous. Well I quickly noticed that with the lights on the colors become muted and they stop being active and don't even eat very much which concerns me because they're known to be voracious eaters. With the lights off all night, then turn on in the morning. It takes about a minute from them to be fully colored up and super active which is normal for this fish, to moving slowly with fins clamped and colors faded. Blue light seems to help some but I've also heard that blue light can cause more stress. Can anyone with experience with this fish give me some advice? They ate so unbelievably gorgeous and it's a shame not to light them up, but when I do the colors fade. To be clear these are glowlight danios...NOT genetically altered glofish. These are all natural and come from Myanmar
On a side note fish do need some light. It is important for their development and health.
Fun video.
looking great man keep it up, not gonna lie you remind me of nick best in the face, now go for his bodyđ„đ
I always get some kind of yellow-ish led. It's easier on the fishes eyes and looks more natural.
