    Not saying that it is easier for men but in this society it is difficult as a woman from India to have black hair on our skin (facial hair, leg hair etc). Some of us just aren't courageous enough to go out with hair on our faces and legs. I also see a lot of Sikh boys teasing girls about facial hair, underarm hair etc which I think plays a huge part into the problem. Also feel that this video should've been more directed at males too as I only know a few Sikh boys that have kept their hair, most cut it off making it difficult to distinguish whether they are Sikh or not

    • @sabrinajagpal
      @sabrinajagpal Před 7 lety +31

      Vir you shouldn't make fun of girls for cutting their hair. Not everyone has the courage to keep all their hair and it doesn't mean they have less faith if they do cut their hair. They could have a closer connection with God than someone does who has kept their hair.

      I understand you're struggle I myself am really insecure about it but its a battle you can't lose if vaheguru is with you. so anytime you get the urge to shave/wax just because of insecurity stop and think of all the people who died for our right to have hair just as much as our brothers. think of how when we are old and hairy (bc lets face it ain't nobody waxing at the age of 70) vaheguru will still love you. hope this helps and I just try to watch these videos as much because it inspires me and helps me not worry about facial etc hair as much.

      yes that is true but how many sikh boys keep their uncut beards (certainly not you) and how many don't drink? all I'm trying to do is show you yes your point is absolutely right but you need to get off your high horse and see that bashing sikh girls isn't the right way of solving this issue.

    • @mikesmith7620
      @mikesmith7620 Před 5 lety +6

      simsun I truly agree with you, bashing on girls isn’t going to solve the problem. Who Guru Ji judges is upon individuals and not gender. I think it’s upon our compassion and living under our Guru through right deeds, then it’s better than calling out the gender.
      Aap Japo Avareh Naap Japavo - you start a meditation, then you spread meditation.
      If it was gender which is the main issue, I think our Guru would have wrote a shabad regarding Gender than individual the most. But Guru’s said not to discriminate at the most “So Kyo Manda Akhiye Jit Jame Rajan” Why hate woman which Kings are born from? And countless on explaining.
      Forgiveness please

    I think an ever bigger problem than Sikh women not standing out is the lack of acceptance and judgment many families have about it. I know girls whose amritdhari parents put them down about their facial hair. My parents disapprove of my wearing shorts over my swim suits when at beaches or pools. Good job on the video, but I think that this is only helping to fix half the problem. I wish I had an idea about how to fix the other half.

    I really dislike alot of these comments saying that women need to be "educated" on the fact looks don't matter. No, what EVERYONE needs to be educated is on Sikhi!, that goes for BOYS too (believe it or not they also care about there looks).
    Anyways back to the point, this is a problem for both women and men and it comes down to the lack of education in Gudwara's.
    Alot of kids sit down during paart and don't understand a word of what is being said (that goes for some adults too). We need to either teach every single kid punjabi or just put subtitles or something in Gudwara's, it should be mandatory. Alot of people seem to be complaining about how alot of kids are drifting away from Sikhi, well it's because they are not taught it in the first place, so how are they even supposed to know how to follow it?
    I mean I know you're probably thinking, well if you think there is a problem why don't you fix it?, - Well I'm one of those kids so I wouldn't have the first clue.

      THANK YOU!!!! YES our Gurdwaras are about commitees and money, they are not interested in teaching the true meaning of Gurbani in a meaningful way that youth can relate to. Thats where Sikh camps come in.. but are mostly run by people who also dont have a solid grasp of Gurbani, which isnt fully complete in English translation. Since gurbani cant be fully expressed translated into another language without losing the essence of its true meaning, we must go to the source. Learn to read, decipher Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji for ourselves. Sikh Research Institute does a great job, with, workshops, courses, retreats.

      Yes I agree, I think a lot of the members of the community emphasise the importance of the outward religious appearance of a person. But they fail to realise that before changing your appearance, people need to learn what the prayers mean and what gurbani means. A lot of people don’t know much about the religion/ history but claim that they are very religious because at least they wear a dastaar and the five kakaars.

    • @belleswithlove9778
      @belleswithlove9778 Před 2 lety

      Long hair is not an issue in hygiene. The main thing here is Discipline. Make sure to shower at least 2 times a day and clean every part of your body. For the head preferably every 2 or 3 days wash as the hair on the scalp is sensitive to daily washing.
      Eating right comes into the mix as well. Avoid sugar and unhealthy oil, eat clean with lots of fresh (preferably organic vegetables) for healthy body and reduction of odour. Exercise daily (if not, 3-4 times a week) for 30 minutes or more to remove sweat so your body does not have odour as well. Last but not least, for the armpits, use Salt based, if not any Ammonium free deodorant and use a natural scrub (salt, ground seeds, ect) every once or twice a week. There are lots of natural products to maintain long hair on head such as henna, gentle natural, SLS free shampoo and conditioner etc.
      All in all, in this modern day there are many products to keep yourself clean and healthy. Cutting your hair doesn't equal to being healthy, it's mainly your habits of lifestyle (eating, exercising, showering well, sleeping at the right time and managing stress). Hence, healthy body = hygienic. Therefore, long hair is not a problem.

    I believe this could be worded a bit differently. Anyone can find God, yes. An Amritdhari Sikh commits themselves to degh tegh fateh. So the banaa is the uniform which holds the Amritdhari's Sikhs accountable for their actions and they have given their head to the Guru and dedicated their lives to serving humanity and protecting the defenseless. People can identify a dastar from hundreds of feet away. Males can easily be in that position to find and ask for help or hold them accountable because if you see a guy with a turban drinking alcohol for example and breaking his rehit you can hold him accountable. But the same cannot be said for bibiya, remember that when females become amritdhari they take the same commitment as males. So you can't be held accountable. This is not about oppressing females but just so there is not a double standard when it comes to amritdhari Singhs. As right now in society, if a male is amritdhari if he doesn't wear a dastar it's seen as wrong but females it's not. We need to keep up to the one universal standard which was created by Guruji. I often go to events like nagar kirtans and I can speak to Singhs in punjabi but I hesitate to speak in punjabi to a female because I don't know if she's even Sikh. It has happened where the south asian person I was speaking to ended up being a hindu or muslim. Also when doing parchar to people, females have flipped back and said "I am Sikh, You know?!" I don't believe veerji meant to call out people who are still early on the path of Sikhi. It is a journey of the 'Santhaa ka Marg'. This is more of an intermediate video in my opinion than one for the Basics. Forgive me if I've offended anyone. Waheguru ji ka Khalsa Waheguru ji ki Fateh

    Hypocrisy in Sikhi
    If,
    Woman = Man
    In Sikh families, why men are asked to wear turban while this isn't expected from women living in the same family? Is turban only for men?
    Is this the reason why women prefer clean shaven men because sikh men have hair and wear turban which they don't find attractive?
    How will women respect turban if they don't wear it?
    Did our Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji gave hukam to only Sikh men to wear turban and not women?
    If women prefer non-sikh or clean shaven men as their life partner, who will marry their brothers? Ever thought about it?
    Is it really easy for a bearded-turbaned man to marry a girl of different faith? Is the ratio of sikh men marrying non-sikh women higher than sikh women marrying non-sikh men?
    Why many sikh parents agree to marry their daughters to rich non-sikh men even in arrange marriage setup? Why suddenly greed comes above the religion?
    Why girls make non-sikhs and cutsurds their boyfriends in their young age and after breakup, they find a decent sikh guy for marriage according to parents choice? Why spoil someone's life?
    Sikh men should also be allowed to cut their hair and make their choices freely, but why is the onus of protecting sikhi only on men while women are free to make their choices?
    Why do people mould sikhi as per their convenience?

      I am not Punjabi, I am Cuban American and I am also a Amritdhari Sikh living in America. I keep my hair I don’t shave or trim and I don’t wear makeup, I tie my Dastar (Turban) every day. I have even kept my Turban on while I’m having surgery in the operating room. I don’t care what ppl want to say about my hairy legs or arm pits or if they want to see me different because I wear a turban. My only concern is to follow n respect my Guru’s teachings n not disobey my Gurus. I am proud to be Sikh and I am even more proud when I am identified as one when ppl point out my Turban. My Fiancé is also a Amritdhari Sikh n he is Punjabi. When ppl ask him why did he choose me for a wife he simply says bcz he wants his wife to look like him and love n respect Waheguru Ji as much as he does.

Beforehand, people would think I'm a Muslim lmaoo... but ever since wearing the Kara, my Sikh brothers n sisters can recognize me and the Muslims who thought I was one of them, now know im not. Nothing wrong with muslims, im just proud of being a Sikh and should be known of as one, and I'd gladly tell people about my religion if they ask. :) However, it should be a choice on if they want turbans like the men too, since women with long hair can keep it like that anyways. There's other ways a Sardarni can represent her religion. As long as you're proud of it and to show and tell about it, Waheguru knows and is proud.

Follow guru gobind singh ji's rehat and stop cutting kesh, waxing etc amd wear a dastaar(if you call yourself sikh). Problem with you western sikhs is you feel pride in cutting kesh, becoming westernised and forgetting your roots and religion.

      carlos carlos Bro its common sense. That girl is feeling proud to wear a kara and saying that she is representing sikhism😂😂 Do you really expect such a girl to keep kesh? Has she lost her mind or what? Does wearing a steel bangle on your wrist gives you a unique identity? In india, countless hindus wear kada as a part of indian culture. Surely, wearing kara is a part of sikh identity but the main thing is turban and keeping kesh which makes you stand out of the crowd and gives you a unique sikh identity.
      Also, based on my online experience with western sikh women, they are complete bimbos with no knowledge of sikhism at all, create their own rules to justify their non sikh lifestyle, can't even name 11 sikh gurus, what to talk of sikh rehat maryada(SRM) yet still call themselves a proud sikh😂😂😂😂
      On a side note, just curious to know, are you a sikh as well?

    A separate and distinct identity is something that is mentioned multiple times in all the baani that is there.
    About 3 weeks ago i was talking to a very esteemed Gursikh (one of the Panj Pyaree) and i brought this question up that
    WHY IS THERE INEQUALITY for WOMEN IN SIKHI? you get 1000 people standing in a crowd you'll be able to spot a Singh by his distinct appearance, but not the Singhni, why is that ? why are they not being loved and treated the same ? We give 5 kakkar to both males and females but yet one is expected to cover their head and the other one is not?
    His answer was very straight forward, he said in a humble-fatherly voice that "Baba Ji loves his/her Gursikh and wants them to stand out from the crowd as you are saying, and it occurs not once but multiple times in gurbani that a Sikh should be distinct with emphasis on distinct outward Sikh like appearance". (baani vich kai baar alag roop rakhan vaaste keha gya hai sikhan lai hun j nai mannde taan oh unhan de aap apne karm, sada kam si dassna)
    It was clear from then on that people who value outward appearances (i was one of them till 2011) are either not comfortable being seen as a Sikh or have some other issue that is keeping them from it, but if you want to follow Gurbaani then keeping kesh and wearing a keski is the way for both Sikh men and women.

    Guru Amardas ji explains how we look pure on the outside wearing a dastaar, keeping our kes, wearing a kirpan, being chartiable and more, but that means nothing if we have not let go of jealousy, ego, anger, materialistic attachment, greed etc. When the mind becomes pure the outside will become pure on its own. The simple answer is: It's Gurujee's Hukam (order).
      1) However, one reason for us standing is so people can easily spot us, when in trouble, as we are meant to serve humanity.
      2) Furthermore, when you have love for Guru, having Guru's roop, will stop you from doing immoral actions in public, since you are then representing Gurujee.
      3) Also, it defeats your ego (Homai) and helps your Sikhi grow within (the inside can change the outside, however, it works the other way around as well).
      Hope this answers your question.

    In Islam, Muslims are commanded to differentiate themselves from the non Muslims. But also for men and women to differentiate themselves from the opposite gender.
    Woman are not allowed to wear clothing that is mainly for men and men are not allowed to wear clothing mainly for women. A wife should bring happiness and tranquility when her husband looks at her. And vice versa, when the wife has a bigger beard and more body hair than the husband how is this going to be pleasing to the husband and when the woman is not allowed to be feminine, being forced to keep her facial hair, body hair, wear clothing like a man how is she meant he feel feminine and beautiful, when outwardly she looks like a man.
    This is the main reason I think Sikh woman do not adopt the dress and look that their religion commands them to. Because it is in our nature to be womanly and object looking like a man.

      That's not what I'm talking about. We don't judge people by their appearance, because we have no right to tell them "you're not wearing dastar/chuni, you're not even sikhi".
      It seems to me that we are more concerned on their appearance than their morality. If you see a baptised woman sikhi with dastar, you would pay them with respect but most of us don't pay any attention to other who are not wearing basic identity. How do you know the baptised sikhi woman is better than non baptised sikhi?
      God didn't create religions to religions to give people power to judges their differences. You have to recognise the differences and accept.
      It literally doesn't make sense to me, all religions are essentially the same but in different paths. It doesn't matter which paths you chose as long as you RECOGNISE the human being in them then you see GOD. This video is more concerned on appearance than human's values.

      How did Jagraj Singh in this video invoke the Anger, Greed, Lust, Ego, or Attachment? What Jagraj really said was to not care what people think of your outward appearance and follow what your Guru said which was to Stand out from the crowd.
      "Stop judging sikh women, you are not helping them, you are pushing them because their appearances are different."
      There is nothing wrong with Judging people and giving constructive criticisms. Jagraj Singh is helping Sikh Woman by showing them how they have forgotten the Gurus teachings. He is not pushing them because there appearance is different, he is just stating the obvious that there appearance is the same and is not distinguishable in a crowd. Sikh woman has lost there identity and this is evident in Sikh Society.

      I'm a sikhi myself but i'm more of a laid back, more tolerate to others and less concerned about their appearance but i don't need to tell you about myself. I'm pointing out, he's not in God's court, so it's not his place to judge people nor is it our place either.
      What you just described about him literally proved my point. People like you compares khalsa vs me "he have done x thing, he's better person than you, he preach everyday and follow khalsa values". Guru teach us not to have excessive prides and not consider our status inferior than others, clearly the way you talk contradicted your khalsa values?
      "You on the other hand are Ignorant and do not understand Khalsa Values, its best you just keep your mouth shut "
      Another form of anger which guru teach us not to be angry and we should encourage sikhi to understand. If you find my comment offensive then you clearly can't see peace in yourself because you just show excessive amount of prides in you over me and the others.

      About Sikhi identity:
      Here's the thing, god gave messages to human about religion's path.
      These messages are going to test us how we tolerate other. For example, we have our basic sikhi identity, if someone don't follow the identity then we are challenged (tested) to see how we reacts to them and how we can try to help them without bragging/judging .
      Clearly you didn't do any of that, you just boasts your prides and compared my status then put me away from sikhi. All of this is a test to God, it's to see how you reacts to other.
      This is all a test, even I'm being tested, you have to find peace in yourself to recognise human being differences.

Although some may say it is oppressive, its purpose is one of righteousness. But also women who are not veiled are in a sense oppressed by the dogma of society and ego which is to espouse others who are not your counterpart.

But just to say that Muslim women who wear the full veil have integrity is an open debate. A lot of these women are oppressed by their male dominated societies. Look when the Talaban ruled Afghanistan women were & forced to wear the full veil. All this has to be of choice & the full view is a possible symbol that woman is subservient to man. If we follow this path then men too should wear a full veil to cover up their features & to live an interpretation of modest life. It's what you think of oneself on the inside forget what others think.
