I have a story with my Sikh neighbors. In 2004 I had serious back surgery, once I came home from the hospital, who was the first persons who checked in on me? My Sikh neighbors, now without naming names I will phrases like husband, wife, sons. The husband insisted on taking my grocery list so the wife could do my shopping for me and she also cooked several of my meals "Yummy", she also even did most of my laundry for me!!! The son mowed my lawn, checked my mail until I was able to walk on my own. The husband helped me get to and from several of my my rehab sessions. After I was able to do everything on my own, I offered to pay them back some how and the husband said that would be an insult if they accepted. We still live here in Dallas, Texas USA across the street from each other and yes, this is a real life story and these people are not only my friends but they're an extension of my loyal family.

Hi Morgan, I find Christianity and Sikhism very similar in the core message of peace and love. There are cultural differences among Sikhs & Christians, but core religious message of Sikh Gurus & Jesus Christ of serving others, helping others, religious tolerance and belief in God are so similar. I would say the World is made better by both Sikhs and Christians :).
      Take Care. Love to all.

the only problem about religions is the ones that demonize the others,,normaly thats christians ,like when they invaded india they brought back a name from egyptian times, and called the indian peoples Deva"s "Devils" if your not "with them" your against them",,also find the difference between western and eastern views,is western its based on faith,in eastern its based on self discovery and personal evolution,,people without a self evolution view are just following sheep who will stay in "clay" and not find the light that is enlightenment..i know as i evolved, and can explain one thing about enlightenment "the ego (the guy i think i am,with my lifes story called stu) can never see enlighenment,,he dropped away and the higher mind takes over....

I was born and raised in the central valley- I know that many pistachio farms are owned by Sikhs and in nearby Selma, Sikhs own a grape/raisin vineyard that makes sunmade raisins. There's a bunch of Sikhs here, so I always knew about their culture. I admit that I was ignorant to the fact that I thought they were arab but i later knew that I was way off and not even close.
They are great farmers and have a good relationship with the mexican american community. My pediatrician was Sikh and so is my current veterinarian.

In fact this religion was born out of Hinduism just to tackle massacre by Muslims. The eldest son in Hindu family was sent to a Guru who taught life values and how to defend oneself. This is how sikhs were born. son of one of 10 gurus of Sikhs was beheaded after his heart carved out in front of his father Sikh Guru by Muslims, How can a Sikh be seem as Muslims. One who treat sikhs as Muslim are a top level of Hypocrite.

I was in California for two years with my church and while I was out there Sikhs were some of the friendliest people to me. One man even walked up to me with a smile on his face and gave me a hug. Just out of the blue! They really do have my respect and I would be happy to call any Sikh a friend. Besides that, I think my religion and theirs get along just fine when it comes to beliefs. They are not exactly the same, but there are many similarities.

@54321Truth I believe you are misinterpreting the meaning of the statement. Sikhism believes in equality between all people in that one person is not inherently because of their religion, gender, caste, skin color, etc. Of course people have their own unique aptitudes and abilities, but the point Sikhi makes is that just because one is SIkh doesn't automatically make one better than a Hindi or a Muslim (or vice versa). Or just because one is a man doesn't mean one is automatically superior than a woman.

    • @BhajunSingh
      @BhajunSingh Před 7 lety +2

Men tend to be stronger than women, yes, though you'll certainly find that there are women who are stronger than many men in terms of physical strength, and so my statement still stands. But I was using "superior" in a general sense - a man is not guaranteed to be better than a women in skill, intelligence, social standing, etc based solely on gender. Of course there are biological differences between men and women, but I am not a better person than all women just because I am a man.
I did miss a word in my previous post - "one person is not inherently *better* because of their religion, gender, caste, skin color, etc." The historical origin of this is that women were denied certain privileges, people of certain castes were seen as socially and spiritually superior, and people of different religions were persecuted simply because of their faith. Thus, the statement of equality between people is meant to promote equal opportunity. Actions and deeds are more important than the superficial aspects of gender, caste, and skin color.

I find Sikh culture very interesting with a proud and honorable history. It's horrible that many here in America faced persicution after 9-11. These were shameful actions born out of fear and ignorance. All the more hurtful being against a people who themselves have been long oppressed by Muslims. I have to admit my own ignorance as to Sikh religion and beliefs, but one thing I have found remarkable and unique of their faith is their refusal to denounce and condemn other religions. I always thought all religions bad-mouthed all the other ones. Sikhs are very respectful of other beliefs. The world would be a far better place if more people thought like that.

If someone really feels they need to have a religion, this certainly sounds like one of the better ones to have. Don't get me wrong. I'm certainly not encouraging anyone to be religious... but I recognize that some people see it as a need, and there are certainly many religions to chose from so if they're going to have a religion, I would say it's better to have one that encourages equality and doesn't threaten people over the possibility of giving up their religion. I don't know if that properly describes this religion, but it sounds like it does. Of course, there are bound to be people in any religion who will define it in a way that others of that same religion would not agree with, so the ultimate test of a theistic religion, and especially a monotheistic religion, would be to let the religion's god speak for itself about its opinion with regard to that religion. With that in mind, I invite the god of the Sikh religion to reply here doing just that and to message me on Twitter letting me know it posted a reply here.

It could have been a great training video for Americans and the rest of the world.
Besides the stone-face readers as noted by the commentator, Dude 10659, there are some fatal errors that can compromise the struggle Sikhs are going through in America:
    1. "Sikhs are experiencing violence...because of their religion". The violence is triggered by their APPEARANCE rather than their religion in people who associated Sikhs with middle-eastern people.
    2. At 1.09 min run time: "The first Asian congressman was a Sikh named...". The image associated with this comment shows the clean shaved south Asian congressman. Calling him Sikh in this presentation is like adding a poison dart to the cause. He may have been born in a Sikh family but he is not only an apostate, he renounced Sikhism. To know more one may read his autobiography. The reference to Saund must be removed to make this video worth anything.
    3. At 2.54 run time: "Khalsa is a group of Sikhs...." There is no group of Sikhs. Are you trying to divide the Sikhs? That would be insidious and greatly harmful for the cause for which this video is purported to present.
    4. At 3.22 - 3.39. About 5K's: Where do you get the idea that only the baptized Sikhs are required to carry 5K's. ALL Sikhs are required to carry 5K's. Kachehra is described as underpants. That is ignorant and silly. It was NOT meant to be underpants. It was like breeches to give the Sikh mobility in the very harsh and hostile environment (and a substitute for Dhoti).

It's obvious that many uneducated people will discriminate against Sikhs because they cannot differentiate between Sikhism and Islam. The one that is getting all the bad press by the media. It may be purely down to appearance, but appearance is one of the main reasons as to why people discriminate regardless. The only issue I see here is a video with likely American-born Sikhs, claiming Sikhs have the same values as Americans. They would say that, wouldn't they. That may not always be true when it comes to Sikhs from other countries

      Hi Jahusa,
To be a Sikh is pretty easy. Live by 3 principles: 1) Naam jupna (Recite God's name) 2) Kiret Kurna (Work for a living) 3) Vund chhukna (share with others). Here's some detail:
      - Daily meditation (morning & evening) for may be a couple mins to remind yourself of ONE God, the creator and care taker of all. All humanity is ONE RACE. And that all religions, all people equal. We are not better, and no one is bad.
      - You have to commit to standing up for Freedom, Independence and Equality not just for yourself, but for others, and especially for the weak and the needy. Now if you believe in American Values (Land of the Free and home of the Brave) you are almost there :). The turban many Sikhs wear is for a very distinct reason. Its a crown. So live like a king. You wear it like a policeman's uniform. Any body can ask you for help. Commitment to help those in need.
      - Do seva (service). If you go to a Sikh Gurdwara (temple) you can learn easier by watching. You'll find people cleaning shoes, or cooking food, or cleaning dishes. You can join them :). If you plan to clean dishes, clothes get splashed with soap and water. You'll get an apron, but carry a spare shirt along :).
      - In Sikhism, your relationship with God is considered direct and unhindered. There's no priest-hood in Sikhism. There are people who read and sing the scriptures, but they are NOT priests. They are readers. They are employees of the Gurdwara. There is no fixed congregation. Everybody is welcome. You just have to observe the decorum & disciple.
      - To be true, Gurdwara is not a temple. It actually means Guru-Dwara, i.e. Guru's Door, that's open to every body whether you believe in religion or God or not. SInce Punjabi & English/Spanish are part of the Indo-European pool of languages, you'll find many phonetic similarities.
      Take care.

Must be distinguished from our Muslim brothers sisters. Sikhs keep their beared and moustaches uncut and tie a turbun on their head. Most humble and compassionate human being in this universe. I recommend all human beings to visit at least once in life time GOLDEN TEMPLE in the northern state Punjab and city AMRITSAR.
