  • Between expectation and reality is a space filled with suffering and conflict. The wider that space becomes, the greater our suffering is. But we can eliminate that suffering with 2 simple steps.
1: Don’t get mad at penguins because they can’t fly. Oftentimes, our suffering results from expecting people to do things they’re not capable of. We perceive them as being difficult when the reality is that they’re not choosing to be that way. Rather, they simply aren’t capable of behaving otherwise. We can get mad at that, or we can accept it.
2: Choose your own ending. When people fall short of our expectations, we get to choose our reactions. Many believe we can’t choose our emotional reactions because they’re involuntary. But the truth is that we all have the ability to control our emotions, rather than allow them to control us. Gabe offers simple yet highly effective tools to do just that. Gabe Karp, bestselling author of Don’t Get Mad at Penguins: And Other Ways to Detox the Conflict in Your Life and Business, is a world-renowned expert on embracing healthy conflict to drive results. His methods were forged from 3 decades of research and experience, and he frequently speaks on the topic.
Gabe sits on the boards of several venture backed companies. He was an executive at ePrize (now Merkle), a promotions company representing 75 of the top 100 brands in the world. Gabe was instrumental in growing the small start up to a $150 million acquisition.
Crain’s Business named Gabe as General Counsel of the Year for the state of Michigan in 2011. He spent the first 10yrs of his career as a litigator, suing other lawyers for screwing up- talk about conflict!
Gabe and his wife Rachel have three wonderful daughters, and he’s an avid heli-skier (yep, that's skiing from a helicopter). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
