  • So after trying to give you as much of a riding demonstration of the DCT automatic system in part 1, I arrive back at Brindley Honda to chat with Lee about exactly how good this new system from Honda is!

I own a VFR 1200 DCT, a very recent purchase, however before buying the bike I tested them a few times and also compared the DCT several times to the manual option, I am a qualified Observer for the IAM and have nearly 40 years riding experience so I think I am qualified enough to offer an opinion on this bike. I love the power delivery in 'Sport' mode and is almost perfect, in standard auto setting at lower revs it tends to change gear more than you would if you were riding a non DCT version and could be annoying in some situations, in 'Manual' mode it works really well, I tend to ride in 'Sport' mode and combine with the 'paddles' to get the engine braking and declaration spot on!
To suggest this is a scooter is ridiculous as the power output and handling are superb, styling is a matter of taste and it may not appeal to all, however, I really like all aspects of the bike and when you consider you have less to think about when riding than on a 'standard' bike it may well improve your safety as you have more time to deal with the hazards that are presented to us as we ride our bikes. I also have a cb 500 which I will keep to do my IAM observing on as there are some aspects of riding that the VFR wouldn't be suitable for teaching on. But my advice would be get out there and have a test and be prepared to be surprised!

I like the idea but it would have probably sold me if it had the manual gear change on the left foot still. I have enough trouble with indicators and think if the current place for gear change isn't broken why try fix it? I tried the BMW K1300R with quick shift and loved the upshifting, could have seen myself on this bike if it was similar.

I am looking to buy the DCT version and love your review. However, some are telling me they prefer the Aprilia Mana 850 GT. Which is better? I mean I want it more for the commuter purpose, but once and a while I want to open it up! also I still want the feel and look I get from the street bike. I can no longer ride a clutch after an injury to my left foot.
    Thanks.

@Tugar747 Try the Aprillia Mana, its a lot cheaper, not as good a bike or system in my eyes, but not bad for price!

How does it behave when you drive very slow throught turns?
(I heard that it changes to neutral at very low speeds sometimes which makes it unstable...)

My dad sold a cruser he bought brand new last year becouse he has carple tunnel on both hands.having problems squeezing in the clutch, and I told him about this bike and he got realy excited. Not so much after i told him the price here in America is $16,000. But still its a cool thing for people like him and lazy peoples lol. I dont see why not buy a bike like this, I always have cars with manual shifting my self though

Tee hee! Worst part is ride motorbikes for a living, and get paid, and thats all I do...man that must piss you off! Or I could have just been playing up to a stereotype and actually have a degree in mechanical engineering?? You decide? Oh hang on - no you dont decide, becuase thats my life which happened, unless you are god? Are you god? If so can I have some haribo please!

definitly not sold on the idea, changing gear using the clutch is all part of the experience. Autos are for lazy yanks
