Intelligent people are out there desperately seeking someone to be friends with, to understand them, and to help them enjoy life. We are social beings, and IQ plays a big part in how we socialize. I also think this is one of the main reasons intelligent people can be sad or nihilistic more often... Excuse the questioner's "arrogance", but it can get frustrating when you are unable to find someone to bond with, so I think that sometimes intelligent people might grasp onto intellectual dominance or power for satisfaction to fill the empty spaces.

@@almalayuwiyyah2512 to get to that point without lowering your standards, requires alot of wisdom. Wisdom is a complex concept, but to some degree I believe it is a product of genetics. Not everybody has an equal capacity to be wise, and one could hypothesize that a higher intelligence requires more wisdom to tame that intelligence. When you are highly intelligent, and you have a lower capacity for wisdom, then telling yourself to be more wise is like telling the elephant to climb the tree. Wisdom isn't the be all and end all, there are many more things to life on top of wisdom. So to some degree, we as a society have to facilitate a good environment for those stuck in an intelligence bubble, rather than forcing them to attain enough wisdom to deal with the difference in their intelligence and that of the population.
@@allanhenriques2694 I think you have a point. But the reality is that "intellectual" or high IQ people are a minority. Is normal that because of being a minority, you feel excluded and tend to depression, etc. There are two solutions to improve this situation, the first is to transform the "intellectuals" into more "normal" people, to get wisdom. The second one is to transform the "normal" people into more "intellectual" ones. But because "intellectuals" are a minority the first is the one that usually will happen.
There is other solution and maybe a lot more, this solution is divide the society in 2, what happens, but actually to get it to an extreme.
I dont really know what you mean with a good enviroment, but its hard the change the society because of a minority, even If it is supposed to be good that minority. Is easier to expect the minority to change, that is the way the human society works, and not only the human one.
And even If there is some ease for some people to be wise, as there is to be "intelligent", I think most of the time is used as an excuse. Because a low level of wisdom or intelligence, does not require "talent", and talent usually takes importance at higher levels. Somebody who has not even tried, has no right to talk about talent. I dont know how much you tried it, but is not an excuse.

I would say smart is the ability to learn and being open towards all opinions will eventually make you wise. At least thats the way jordan used the terms in the video.
So i think swapping smart for wise in that sentence would fit the definition of those words better

People are being hard on the guy but at least the reason he's asking the question is because he wants to connect with others instead of writing them off like can often be the reaction of smart people to those who don't understand them. It could also simply be read as "I'm having a hard time finding people who share my particular interests. What can I do?"
003 7712 people got pissed by him because he claimed he's an intellectual. You can easily frame the question avoiding belittling others if you're that smart, but he still chose to do it. Maybe he didn't meant to, who knows, but his execution of the question is just a little bit off to the side of arrogant show offs.

I could say your comment is a bit to that side as well but I won't because that's not nice. I'll defer to Jordan who as a true studied intellectual could have nailed him to the wall but instead chose to give an answer that would hopefully benefit him regardless.

I can't know what's going on in the head of that guy, but he expressed his experience in a really weird way. Maybe that's subjective but he still could have done better. And that's the main reason behind negative feedback.

I think there is some truth to it. Intelligence doesn't make you socially capable, but it DOES make you almost automatically good at a lot of things. This can create a harsh contrast between your experience in intellectual pursuits and social ones, which drives you away from being social.
Then you never get the experience you NEED to be skilled at socializing, which means you never actually improve. After all, it's often much harder for the naturally gifted to try something they're just not automatically good at, since your default assumption will be that you're just not doing it right.
What this guy was looking for was a trick, but what he needs was just to force himself through a few hundred hours of awkward socialization and he'll suddenly find himself skilled enough to actually do it for fun, and from there it's all gravy.
If your the smartest person in the room.. Your in the wrong room. If your the only person in the room your only as smart as the room is big. The room is ego.
In my experience, those who proclaim themselves intellectuals aren't.

Sabrina C no way to word it without “bragging” You can look at things objectively and properly determine what you are capable of, if you state it, is it really bragging or is it the truth? I don’t get why people become so obsessed with social standards and ignore the possibilities. In reality if you get annoyed at it, it simply means you are insecure. Reality is, there are talented people...and the not so talented. It is not hard to look at yourself objectively and determine that.

I think he spent a lot of his early years around people in the trades and later life around intellectuals in academia. By not staying in just one of those silos, he got a relatively broad view of society.

Prehaps its better to ask an arrogant question and learn something from it than to remain arrogant. I think that this guy probably learned something about himself that day, and hopefully he grew from the experience.
I agree with the 3 people above me. I used to be very much the same as the guy who asked the question. It took me about 3 or 4 extremely important people in my life to hint at the possibility that I was arrogant (through my interest in abstract ideas and concepts and my anger/irritation when people didn't care for it) in order for me to even start considering it as a possibility, even though few friends (and ex-girlfriends) had hinted or said it in some manner.
I don't even consider myself super smart or 'an intellectual', but I did JP's UnderstandMyself test and the Intellect was at 98th percentile, so it indeed helped me understand a whole lot of things. If I had contact with that test and this video (and all the JP content) about 12 years ago, I would not have suffered as much, and would have probably dodged depression and panic disorder.
Better to ask and get rekt than to remain in the illusion of superiority.

There is no such thing as a stupid question..... but there are underdeveloped people.
That sort of question is difficult to word in a way that doesn't make you seem like a jackass, but it's still a good question to ask. The problem comes with the word "intellectual" as it is a loaded word, but in the context of the guy's question he really just meant people who have a very distinct set of interests which are far away from anything most people look into.

Or very high in openness with a slightly above average iq (110-120). Jordan even expanded upon that concept in this speech. If you are very high in openness (interest in ideas, unconventional ways of thinking, pick up patterns easily, appreciate aesthetics etc) it can be difficult to find others to relate to on certain topics, just like it can be difficult for someone who's very agreeable or very extraverted. If you're different enough (not the same as better) you can easily perceive other people who are more balanced in their personality makeup as boring, too sensitive (low neuroticism) or (in the case of agreeableness) as too caring/unempathic.
Humility is key. So what if you’re a ‘genius’. There’s always someone smarter than you. There’s always someone better than you! And that’s how the world is; a beautiful mix and a treasure of opportunities and experiences with people. Humility is more fun, as you discover that what you see isn’t always the truth. If you’re too arrogant, you won’t have much opportunity to learn new things!
Unfortunately, alot of people are like that. They think that they are too smart to learn from anyone that they deem to be beneath them intellectually.

Iq tested at 160+ here on a specialized test back in the 9th grade. I have never had an issue with people being too dumb or not interesting enough. If you think someone isn't interesting anymore after a short conversation, then either you aren't interested enough or you aren't interesting enough. No matter how intelligent you are, you've only lived one lifetime with one set of circumstances. Everyone else has lived a different life and probing their perspective is something you can only do by asking
Thomas Stewart the typical collegiate intellectual is so siphoned, arrogant and elitist that they only perceive a certain faction of ideas and subjects as "deep" and worth their time. I know a guy who is considered gifted and tested into a high IQ tier and he literally gets enraged at "normal" ppl and how boring /basic they are to him, an attitude that I personally find disturbing. For me, overtime I've been able to peel back the layers of what appears normal and I find most ppl and most aspects of human nature utterly fascinating not just in an analytical way but even in a way that relates to archetypes, symbolism and reoccurring patterns within history.
This attitude makes me more appreciate and more in awe of all that's around me, rather than standing in an intellectual ivory tower mocking every and anything that doesn't fit into the alleged schema of "deep and intellectually stimulating"

I grew up being told I was very smart because I've always had good grades with little to no effort, but now in college I get constantly humbled by insanely smart teachers and other students. That's why I think going to college was such a huge blessing in my life
I am growing up in a technological age. Thankfully technology has shown me almost every time that everybody else is smart in their fields of interest and I am no more superior than anyone else.

Funny how intelligence fools itself. Years of youthful accolades sets the adult trap of arrogance. The complexity of life can overwhelm the most intelligent into chaos.
Agreed, when I realised my top grades and success in exams meant nothing, I also realised that I was waiting and waiting to reap the rewards of this 'success', not putting any effort into living or having success in any field as I was almost conditioned to think that being good at exams and a quick learner was enough. On top of my poor social skills. I'm realising my arrogance and trying to analyse myself and take action and calm the chaos caused by holding onto childhood - that I 'have potential', that 'my time will come', even down to things like assuming my body will heel itself like it did when I was a child so ignoring pain and trying to sort things out without help...Unwilling to let go of the child phase through arrogance

As soon as you’re able to gain respect, not for the people with the highest intelligence, but for the people who work the hardest, you can begin welcome anyone into your life no matter how smart or dumb they may be. If you feel like your intelligence is blocking you from having meaningful relationships with others, learn to respect them for their drive, passion, and hard work, not for their IQ points. Then you might start making friends.

@@willariza00 It's interesting. You don't see a question from him, but I do. I do because I'm living the exact same thing as he does. Being hungry for intellectual stimulation can be a difficult situation and a state of suffering. It is not easy to find intellectually stimulated people, who are basically only interested in exchanging on creative ideas, and I can tell from my experience that it is painful. You are simply not fed with one of the main things that keep you alive: ideas and creative minds. It is a difficult question to sort out and I totally get his point in needing advice on that, especially when you are in front of Jordan Peterson, when the very fact of being in front of him and asking him a question represents compensation for the lack of intellectual stimulation.
What makes Professor Peterson unbeatable is his combination of a brilliance and humility. Listening to the Professor in not a waste of time. Millions of people including me absolutely love him.
I've noticed that the typical University educated intellectual is so siphoned, arrogant and elitist that they only perceive a certain faction of ideas and subject matter as "deep" and worth their time. I've always thought I was stupid, retarded at one point. For many years. I didn't understand people around me. Myself. Education system and why we should even do things. I never had at all any friends that lasted at all. Maybe now it's a different story, but. I had severe problems with school, always in all aspects. Then recently, I was officially diagnosed with adhd mixed.. On medication and it seems like I was asleep all this time but just woke up. I thaught myself guitar in music theory since I was I think 14?
I always had weird ways of connecting everything. And of viewing the world. I know because I tried talking to others and they never experienced that at all. And only recently about yesterday. When I was telling my friend about a stupid theory I had on art and how conciousnes grows in a cycle. I began thinking of the possibility that I might actually be smart...
I just wonder why so many people are like ahh I'm smart but I have nou smart ppl. As if stroking their ego. Not just that comment, but so many others that I have seen online.
I don't get it. Because at least me, I felt stupid always, but also felt as if I wasn't stupid and always curious and fascinated. But I guess if I am smarter then normal, that could explain why I always felt like an alien and a misfit. Even when I tried looking normal and even perhaps cute and develop social skills to mask how weird I am. Would, could be as if the literal explanation of ignorance is bliss.

I feel like, people didn't really listen to Peterson's answer and are kind of bashing the guy who awkwardly asked the question.
Some weird sense of ultimate humility will not solve this problem. If you have a real interest in ideas, not discussing them with other people will make you depressed really quickly. That's how it is and there's no shame in it.
People appear to see the word "intellectual" being used for oneself as immediate arrogance, but I believe in this case it was just honesty and an unwillingness to comply with the requirement to be almost self-degrading when talking about one's own intellect. And even being proud to be good at something, even being proud to be better at something than others isn't inherently arrogant. It only becomes arrogant if it extends into a sense of general superiority.
I agree, i really find it odd that most people missed the point of Jordan's answer. I think it just shows how that position isn't really a relatable position to be in, having an interest in ideas and theory's per say and not having anyone to share it with can really get you depressed easily, i have that issue and it really clicked for me when Jordan answered and he pronounced it in a way that you can get around with it somehow and adapt with people.

I'm someone that finds myself in a similar position to the guy asking the question sometimes. I often find myself getting frustrated because conversations are rarely on a level that I find interesting and I have an insatiable desire for intellectual conversation. Or to put in other words a conversation that will challenge my brain.
I also agree with Jordan Peterson that it is just arrogance. Not on the part that I feel superior to everyone else because I don't, but arrogance in the fact that I think everyone should be talking at that level in the first place. Not everyone wants to do it or is capable of doing it. If I want these conversations then I'll have to go and find it like any other hobby.
It reminds me of something my therapist told me a long time ago. He told me that I was a smart person (and I really didn't know that at the time, but now I'm not ashamed to say it) and he told me that the problem I have is that I think that I'm average. That I'm not smart and everyone else is capable of what I'm capable of doing and he told me that it is simply not true.
So yeah. I suppose it is arrogance. Not because I think I'm better, but because I think that everyone else should be capable of it and want the same things as I want too.

I get the frustration, there are times when I just really want to have an intellectual conversation and simply cannot with who is around me, been going on my whole life. But I’ve adjusted and learning how to meet people where they are is in itself not only profoundly difficult but as such very worth it. You might call it emotional intelligence. It is a path towards wisdom.

Intellectualism is not directly correlated with a claim to intelligence. I think you made that jump too hastily. What intellectual implies is someone who is interested in things such as academic topics, world problems and literature. Not just in one topic, but looking for connections in a holistic manner and stringing different fields together. Usually this results in scholarly pursuits of very difficult and abstract topics, and understanding these of course requires intelligence. Intellectualism doesn't make you more superior, it just means you're competent in related academic fields.
You wouldn't imply when someone says he's very social that he's claiming other people are not social and therefor inferior. It's just acknowledging a field of expertise and there is nothing wrong with that, it doesn't come from cruelty or narcissism.
Second half of your comment I completely agree with. Even people who have no interest in epistemology have tremendous insights to offer. The idea that other people are boring or uninteresting is more a reflection of someone's own inability to ask the right questions and properly listen. When it comes to people there are always stones left unturned and things to discover.

So are STR, DEX and CON. For that matter. I know lots of very strong people who can't take a hit. I also got hired at a plumbing job because I was small and limber, and I could fit in tight spaces my macho co-workers could not, saving us hours of time and money. Everyone is useful, everyone can be a benefit.
It's true though, I find it hard to have very deep conversations with people. I can get pretty deep with many people but I've only met one person in my life that I could spend hours and hours having a very deep and intellectually challenging conversation with. You can call me whatever you want but the fact is, I get bored talking about simple thing all the time. I like learning and challenging myself physically and mentally. I'm not the smartest person to walk the earth and I probably will never be. But I'm still going to learn everything I can and having these very intellectually challenging conversations is how I learn.

Very interesting. In my twenties I took a test for Mensa. They declared me in the top 2% of IQs in the nation. Then they invited me to join. Having absolutely no idea why, at that time, but I knew that I did not want to be apart of "that group." Over the years I've come to understand, without being able to articulate, what you have just explained. Many people with high IQs believe to the depths of their souls that they are superior beings. That is what I rejected. This high intellect that I supposedly have comes with deficiencies in other important areas. Deficiencies that have made life difficult when trying to fit in with "normal" people. I think it can be best summed up that..., as "smart" as I am, I'm really not all that smart.

I sort of see where he’s coming from. I felt this way too a few months ago. Not that I consider myself above average in intellect in my college, but my friends and family couldn’t care less about having conversations about abstracts topics. And I’d notice it would annoy them to talk about philosophy or theories that i found interesting. But this changed as soon as I started listening to their interests and spending less time alone and instead with friends.. it’s not their fault, there’s always people out there that would be interested, its my fault if I havn’t searched for them and instead impose it on my friends. The line between intellect and wisdom is connected via personal experience, most often profoundly difficult experience. Humility then has the opportunity to manifest itself and arrogance recedes quite substantially.

This videos sums up my experience with "smart" people communities. I got into a small community of people and our goal was to get really good at maths by teaching ourselves. We would share resources with each other and compete to see who would be the best. Over time everyone got really arrogant just because they were clever they thought they were better than everyone. Makes communities toxic, you are better than everyone or you are a pleb that was there mindset.

Being smart is a gift, but to be intelligent, you need more than just a gift. Being intelligent is about when and what to be smart about, and with whom. To have this, it takes a well rounded, well developed, well educated and well socialized person a lot of introspection to adjust and to adapt.
You're confusing intelligence with wisdom. Being smart is the same thing as being intelligent: it means you possess extraordinary brain power capabilities. Being wise, on the other hand, is how you defined intelligent: it's knowing the rights and wrongs of any given situation.
I like to approach every person with the attitude of wanting to learn something from them. Everyone has different knowledge and experiences. To say you don’t get enough „intellectual stimulation“ from seemingly less intelligent people is just unbelievable pretentious. Most people I met who talk in the manner of this young gentleman were far from intellectual. If anything those people are almost always incredibly close minded and egocentric in their way of thinking, unable to engage in the actual sharing of creative and abstract ideas. I believe actual intellectualism is to gather wisdom from anyone, no matter how you judge their actual intelligence. Part of this is the fact that intelligence comes in many different shapes and forms and other people might be more able in areas in which you are lacking.

Years ago I pondered this: if I had to choose between being "intellectual" vs being "wise", which would I choose? After much back-n-forth I decided that 'wisdom' is superior to 'intellect'. Why? I concluded that 'wisdom' is a product of life-long experiences and intuition based on millions of years of evolution. "Intellect", on the other hand, could be fooled by faulty logic etc.. And then, my 7-year-old chimed in with with his 2 cents worth: "intelligence speaks; wisdom listens". Apparently he'd picked it up in a cartoon which, needless to say, just blew me away!
But you could cultivate and build upon your wisdom more if you were more intelligent.

Yeah at one point I had this problem where I was on some ivory tower thinking I was all alone and too smart for everybody but then I figured out I just had social anxiety and didn't know how to relate to other people through my feelings, cause I was blocking them. I could not see the beauty in others and the similarity of others to myself because I was so highly identified with being "smart", which made me too stupid to connect with people with seemingly very different interests and see where their interests might converge with mine somehow
I am willing to bet 99% of people in this comment section believe with a dead certainty that they are intellectually above average. It is called the above average effect and people tend to highly overestimate their intelligence. Obviously this is a slightly skewed sample so maybe we can assume there are a bit more above average than below average people due to the nature of the topic, but one must still not overestimate the difficulty of these subjects.

Highly intelligent people don't need this type of hand-holding intellectual stimulation. The best in our societies have performed research on their own like Tesla, or researched things at everything they do like Franklin. True Geniuses seek out the stimulation that they require.
love how mr. peterson describes what the asking person is saying as creative and abstract ideas. a way to describe the difference without starting to call a group "working class" and the other group as "intellectual class" or whatever. What people need to understand is that both wise and brilliant intellectual people are found in all walks of life. He mentioned a carpenter- first of all, Jesus conveyed the most profound and world- changing truths with simple parables tied into common things like sheep and shepherd, farming, etc. He was able to communicate on a deeply intellectual level and impart wisdom to the learned, the wise, and little children.
As for being a carpenter, that's a challenging trade requiring great gifts in spatial visualization, economy of material use, and a lifetime of learning. I once watched my father in law build a wooden lawn chair, from my description and materials, in 15 minutes, simply by eye and deep experience, to perfection. I was in awe! That takes great intelligence.
Often the smartest or wisest people are busy doing things with their gift, and aren't interested in sitting around chatting about ethereal concepts.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, the wise and intelligent know that they don't know everything, and spend more time listening than talking.

The way he warned the guy who asked the question against intellectual arrogance is superb. It was as If saying in plain English, "do not think if you are smart that you are more virtuous or wise and do not put yourself above the working-class".
Smart is not a virtue. Arrogance is vice.
Therefore the division between the intellectual and the working class will be on you, the intellectual, who created the division by your arrogance and not the working-class people. Jordan Peterson is warning against division. Because, if you have that then there is no normal society but oligarchy. Bad guys always win.

My boyfriend is fascinated by everyone. Literally. It's amazing watching him strike up a conversation. He will keep asking questions until he finds out what the other person is passionate about. Then he asks a bunch of questions about that topic. He can engage the shyest person in the world this way. My kids love him because he has shown a genuine interest in their obscure hobbies and interests.
If you are only going to be interested in your narrow field of study, then others are usually going to find you boring.
