    This was 1986 - 1987 at Ramstein AFB West Germany.....before the end of the cold war. Creek Klaxon, Eight ANG FIS units formed a composite squadron and sat Zulu alert, while the host unit (86th TFW) transitioned into the F-16.
    TDY crews came from New York, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Oregon, California, Texas and Hawaii ANG. 9 aircraft came from N.D., Minnesota, and California squadrons. It was so long ago, however it seems like only yesterday.....too much BEER!

    The "Happy Hooligans" F-4's would fly up to Grand Forks AFB when I was stationed there in '82 to do touch and goes. A nice change of pace from the slow B-52's and KC-135's that took forever to go around in the pattern. These may have been the exact same birds I saw back then.

    Oct. 1, 2018---Thanks for the video as it's the first time I've seen D's doing a scramble. Would catch the E's from the 43rd & 18TFS's at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska (77-79) do one from time to time, though usually they were done at smaller bases, intercepting TU-95 Bears.

    Great video. Captured the J-79 howl pretty good. Those missile fins could cause some serious Phantom Bites!

    The F-4, the only aircraft in the USAF inventory, that smoked so much, you could see the plane coming at you... like nothing else.

    Great video, but agree with others, these are from North Dakota and believe they are F-4C's models, not F-4D's. The nose cone on the "D" was smoother.

    • @johnmilner5485
      @johnmilner5485 Před rokem

      No it wasn't . The D has the bump under the ir hump for the RHAW gear , these are D models. The C didn't have the ' bump ' . The only smooth radome birds were navy J / S models the B/N had the ir hump. Now British phantoms had smooth radomes.

    Surprised to see a gun pod being used in an air defense posture. Our pilots always told us that the SUU-16 aqnd SUU-23 were almost useless air to air.

    • @wiesenbefeuchter
      @wiesenbefeuchter Před 7 lety +1

      Why useless ?

    • @johnmilner5485
      @johnmilner5485 Před rokem +1

      @@wiesenbefeuchter the early pod was equipped with a ram air turbine for power and was very speed limited . The later pod was powered by the aircraft and had a much higher speed rating . So the above post is right & wrong. The pod on these phantoms is the later pod.

      @@johnmilner5485 But why useless ?

    • @johnmilner5485
      @johnmilner5485 Před rokem

      @@wiesenbefeuchter The 2nd design pod isn't useless as it had power from the aircraft and a decent gunsight system and was ok for air to air ( not great , just ok ) the first design with the external ram air power was rated for very slow speed to operate is why the man above said useless . It was speed and G limited ( both pods were) , but the speed and g limit on the first design were both very low. If the second design was useless it wouldn't have been on a bird in the mid 80s sitting Zulu alert . So basically when you get to the merge you don't want to slow in the Phantom ( or anything really ) so having to slow down drastically to use the pod was very dangerous . Speed is life .
