Bullitt - Shifting Gears (Dirty Horns - Extended)

- This is an adaptation of the music used in the build up to the famous car chase in the film "Bullitt". I played the original version in my car and couldn't get enough of that 'dirty horn' sound, so I used Audacity (a great piece of free software) to loop the horns.
If you want to feel like Steve McQueen:
a) Pop this on your car audio.
b) Select a vehicle in front of you and follow it around until the driver gets spooked and hits the accelerator in a bid to lose you.
c) Chase car.
For added reality buy a dark green 1968 Mustang GT and move to San Francisco.
Thanks Lalo Schifrin
This music should automatically play whenever you sit down in the driverseat 😀
If you feel like Steve McQueen.
Not in my car..In my car you feel more like Columbo.....
@peterahjorter...Pithy pithy...remember to buckle up that belt, like our bad boy! Excellent wake-up music. Thanks from Darrell.
Steve McQueen himself said you will never again see a car chase scene filmed they way you saw it on this film. Never again.
He never saw Ronin.
@@christopheradams5607 He obviously didnt watch Herbie Rides Again
@@christopheradams5607 Ronin chase is/was great, but way much slower speed driven, so it's not comparable. Bullitt was made 170km/h at best!!!
Wouldn't ever want to see anyone try again. I hope they don't try and remake this movie. I can't believe they remade Thomas Crown Affair! It should be a rule that no McQueen movie should ever be allowed to be remade. There will never be another Steve McQueen ever.
Eric Talkington Absolutely... Steve's legend lives on.
A huge round of applause and a standing ovation for the person who is playing the bass guitar. Sets the tone for the entire work. The bass player is running the background and everyone knows it.. bring the love and play of your own and passion
bass ruuning the backround? don't even hear any
I was so thinking the same thing and glad I saw this comment. Legendary bass.
@@jrnumex9286 get a better hi fi then🤣
Listening to this is the only way to persuade me to drive to the supermarket.
6 tv dinners like Steve
Even if you have to ride on the bus from the sitcom “THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY”?!
Lalo has the music talent Mancini had. Every note, every sound, every tone, every vibration has exactly what the movie needed to tell the story. They were certainly part of the cast that made it excellent. This music makes you feel McQueen shifting gears and driving like a controlled maniac.
James Bailey both are legends in the movie scoring business.
Love them both.
Also can you give me a jump? My car won't start.
Mancini and? What's his full name?
@@andreifarcas1920 Joseph Manchin III, born August 24, 1947.
I could listen to this all day. Lalo was a genius. Between this, Dirty Harry, and Enter The Dragon, my car is never without a Lalo cd!
My favorite of his scores these three.
If only Lalo Schifrin had let the late composer Jerry Goldsmith who scored the ‘Omen’ movies also score the 1979 adaptation of “THE AMITYVILLE HORROR”???!!!
I play this now at work. Definitely makes picking your way through traffic more fun...and inspiring.
Warning!! Do not play this while driving!!!! You will get a speeding ticket!!!
Lol!
Yeah, but play it driving on flyovers (UK), that feels like a scalextric racing track, with a decently sporty car and no cameras, and OMG...! :)
Excellent !!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)
It happened to me a few years ago! HAHAHAHAHA!!!
Daniel Ross Sorry! Already did!! What a rush!!!!!
You can listen to this driving the smallest, most insignificant car around and you still feel as if you're in a chase through 60s Frisco. Lush!
Those horns that kick in at 1:57 are incredible that's the best part of this it's fantastic.
Listen to it while driving in your 60s muscle car
Remembers "Driving Dirty" in my 1964 Volkswagen bug.....and I REALLY thought I was Cool.....lol......Salutes
69 SS Camaro 396 with mickey thompson N50-15 meats and deep dish cragars. Blue exterior with chrome mud flaps lol. That car was tight!
I do...in my '66 Vette convertible with sidepipes!
AZMike Aw that's a cool car closest I get is my Mustang GT500 2017 still cool though
works for me in a 2017 Fiesta
Lalo is still around! Hopefully, he will pen with the next Bullitt story.
I discovered this while walking after supper one night on vacation in S. Portland ME.
Definitely a go to tune now.
muscle cars, chase scene, and complimentary music. Priceless.
anyone who has appreciation for music scores and cars must have this track laid down in their heads!!! SUPERB Heart ThUMPING JAZZ to prelude a world class chase scene..TOTAL CAR PORN at its best...
What a scene. Phenomenal piece from my all -time favorite composer, Lalo Schifrin. Bullitt rules!
Mine too.
One of the greatest car chases ever filmed, if not the greatest.
This version is incredible, I have long adored the original but this re-master is insane! it truly has to be resurrected if they ever remake the movie by using this version,,, it sounds as if you are in the room with the orchestra playing every note!
I love the low Trombones that come in so clean!! The saxophone is so with the beat and on time!!!!!
When Badass was real.
YO!!!!!
Good point. Today people are apologizing for being white or for being born, or whatever. It's laughable. What a difference from the days of real men, like Steve McQueen!
Absolutely Masterfully conducted by Lalo Schifrin. What a Musical Genius.
This guy is in the class as Morricone from the spaghetti westerns of the 60,s.
I just got my 2019 Bullitt Mustang 2 days ago and I have added this to my iPhone as it's own playlist so I can find it quick when needed. The car is AWESOME. The most fun I've had driving in years.
the sheer build up of anticipation caused by the answering crescendos of strings &woodwinds, honking trombones and saxophones is superbly written and performed...this jazz is TOPS!!! The constant bass riff is ADDICTING..
Spot on agree
the intro sounds like an engine idling, just waiting for the horses to be unleashed onto the hilly streets of San Francisco...
rigjht on bro
My friend had a Mach 1 Mustang in 1971 when I was a senior in high school. After hearing this music in the movie, riding in that car was never the same. It was always like the car was talking this music. Nice.
The chase scene was certainly great, but Lalo Schifrin's score really made it legendary.
'WHAT THE HELL! WHERE DID THAT VOLKSWAGON COME FROM...AGAIN?"
there must be two guys with same car
True story
IKR, that damn green VW!
it was the same scene multiple shots
You see the same cars over and over on the chase. I mean, did you know, the Charger looses 6 hubcaps in the chase?
Wonderful music, wonderful film. The King of Cool will never be surpassed.
Escucho! este hermoso tema cuando voy al cajero automático!!!
That bass.
Listening to this on my new speakers, my sofa is literally vibrating with the deep bass.
Now this is what I'm talking about driving an muscle car and being the biggest Bruce lee fan their is!!!! Man you can't tell me shitt!!! The open road is mine!!! And when I workout hell I'm gone!!! It's ENTER THE DARGON TIME!!!! Thanks Bruce for what you put out there!!!! You made me the man I am today well God, and my mother!!!! I'm listening to this jam right now!!! I love jazz so this is perfect!!!!
One of the greatest scores in all of cinema.
IT WAS ON TV THE OTHER NIGHT & I HAD TO FIND THIS, WHAT A PIECE OF MUSIC!!
love the music in Bullitt. Those horns delivered
Aye,. Definitely, man : ) Nice bass too and them drums
@@Kelly14UK Carol Kaye played bass on this number.
Well, that 11 minutes flew by. Well done Sir.
greatest car chase ever filmed plus great music to back it up will never be duplicated classic
Boat fuel, 104 octane. Schifrin strikes again. Tremendous stuff.
Anyone can drive all day to this. Thanks for posting this.
I´ve been laughing for an hour: "For added reality buy a dark green 1968 Mustang GT and move to San Francisco". Right on!
Not today's San Francisco, unfortunately... you'd spend most of this sweet song sitting in traffic and locking your doors, hah.
Schifrin made some phenomenal detective music.
This is beyond classic!
Excenlente el gran MUSICO Argentino LALO SHIFRIN
Absolutely brilliant the way he uses the horns, the baritone sax with the low note and tenor sax’s in that call and answer up beat attack, genius in its conception and execution. Drummer is foundational in his beautiful consistency and groove with the bass line. This kind of music and for what it was created for is truly one of a kind. Raw talent on display for the finest audiovisual experience! AND DONT FORGET THOSE BEAUTIFUL CARS 🚘 ❤❤👍😎 thank you so very much!! LALO SCHIFRIN AND STEVE MCQUEEN AND COMPANY 🙏
This jazz score just provides a great build up to the chase. Beautiful..........
Vroooom Vrooooom..............................Screeeeeeech!!!!! and they're off.
Magnificent expanded mix ... a real powerfunk track ... thanks a lot !!!
Might just even come in handy for the movie that my oldest son’s writing titled “JAMES DEAN VERSUS NICK RUSSO”, which to be an epic movie version of the classic 1991-95 NBC sitcom series of “BLOSSOM” for theatre screens.
The great Lalo..., the best soundtrack composer.
The drums sound great in there too, I like the scene when the Charger makes that hair pin turn and guns it up that steep hill
If you saw this in a theatre, you'll never forget the way your stomach felt as they road over the bumps. The unique feature was to end the music the second the "chase" started. That was never done before.
+Vin Dicator I've seen this at the pictures...
+Vin Dicator The youth of today can't appreciate this anymore, but we do, the Oldskool Warriors ! Amen !
Solar Radio
They don't even know what a tripod is used for. The camera never sits still for one second to show you the actor's face!!
That was a masterpiece. It gave yet more substance to the chase.
Road over the bumps ?.
Great lead up music before the chase !!🚗🚓
lalo shifrin you were inducted into the hall of fame & rightly so ,loved by clint eastwood ,what more to say brilliant sound ,musicsians so good
As soon as I heard this theme, I knew it was the same composer who did the Dirty Harry and Magnum Force themes/soundtracks.
The best film soundtrack ever. I listen to it all the time.
So i put this on as I got in my car to go get groceries. Noticed I had been driving behind the same car for awhile, I couldn't help myself and decided to tail them for a bit. Got a little out of hand when they noticed and started trying to lose me.
Did the car you were following crash into a gas station?
Hahaha - so its not just me who starts getting too into Lalos Heist themes
Warchild281 Ha ha ha!! Nice one!! Did their hubcaps spin off during your pursuit ..
Did they try to shoot you
That's a real possibility nowadays...guys with warrants on them driving, suddenly an "undercover" cop car's' following them...they get their guns ready.
In regards to the mix of this track from Bullitt, "Shifting Gears", you have to remember that there was an original tracking session for this movie cue with Lalo and the musicians...6, 8, or 16 tracks on analog audio tape. When the movie was dubbed for the soundtrack that would go onto each prints magnetic stripe, it was eq'ed again...and the sound editors during the session might have reduced the sound of the drums in the mix. This mix, whether original or remixed for the cd, represents more of what the true original scored mix might have been...and it would have had more fidelity than what was heard in the theaters in '68. Theater speakers, at that time, were notoriously spotty and uneven in regards to quality. The only way to tell about the films original magnetic soundtrack is to find a print from then...and that would be a bit of a stretch for a movie some 40+ years old...it's quality would be pretty rough by now. There are prints available that get rented...but when they were struck off the original neg, striped and recorded...one would have to find out.
Que belleza este soundtrack!!!
AWESOME SOUNDS.. PERFECT FOR A MANUAL TRANS!!
Wonderful extended version of this classic! Steve McQueen's persecution of outlaws is unforgettable !!
This is real men’s heritage
Coolest tune in history!
This is what it's like having a tune in your head you love.
All that's needed is the rumble and roar of those 70s V8s. Brilliant piece of music and brilliant version. That fat horn is sublime.
Shaker Maker 60's*
@@InfiniteSith136 ….Spot on! Bullitt was released in late 1968 in the US and '69 globally - NOT 1970's. Also the engine sound effects for McQueen's Mustang were dubbed as the 'original' Mustang engine didn't sound 'beefy' enough.
Love this music!!!
Love watching the movie too!!!
That car chase scene is awesome!!!
I still have my VHS and it still plays perfectly!!!
Now, if I had: The 7 Ups, that would be great!!!
Birds of Prey, from the early 1970's, would be a nice addition too!!! That helicopter chase scene was great!!!
I also wish that I had a copy of Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry!
I live by Steve's last home in Santa Paula. His home was on S. Mountain Rd and the 10th St turn get's you there. When I sat in front of it...I just cried. .....
THIS MUSIC LITERALLY GROWLS AT YOU, LALO AT HIS BEST
Bullitt é e será o melhor filme de sempre
Damn green Stangs! Always popping in when this song starts. You can't never drive your Charger in peace.
Thanks I always needed my horns looped.
Sounds painful but glad to help!
Someone else beat me to it... FANTASTIC!!! I deplore remixes, but this was tastefully done. THANK YOU.
Boom!! best driving around town music!!
Didn't even know we needed an extended version of this song. Whoooooo
HAHAHAHAHA!!!! I LOVE the advice on how to feel like Steve McQueen!
Unbelievably great. My compliments indeed on the groove, made it addictive. Superb.
Thanks for listening
This is just so badass, love the horns
No wonder Steve mcqueen was the coolest man on earth when he had this music playing in the background when he was on screen.
He probably couldn't hear it.
grand musicien merci Monsieur
Mon plaisir
The kind of a song that makes every car chase scene in the classic 1979-81 NBC adventure comedy series of “BJ & THE BEAR” go faster than planned by the producers in general.
Bill Hickman, driver of the Charger, did the driving for Gene Hackman in French Connection. Also drove in the 7-Ups. Great driver.....
And Gene Hackman shot him to death at the end of the movie.
Charger vs Mustang. Tearin' up the Streets of San Francisco
Playstation's Driver catch this vibe eh
Lalo 'MADE' the movies his scores are in!
I used to think this was by Mancini. Lalo rocks (sort of). Best song of the movie and one of my favorite non R&R musical pieces.
une merveille !!! au volant de ma citroen 2cv 1956 j'écoute cette musique à fond ( à cause du bruit du v2 375 cm cube ),c'est à dire à 60 km heure ...
Si je peux me permettre... Ce n'est pas un V2 mais un flat - twin.
I can't thank you enough for putting this up in this format. I can't get enough of the whole thing. The horns, the drums, the beat, the transitions. It made the afternoon go by fast.
Dont know who the fabulous horn musicians were, but Earl Palmer is on drums, and Carol Kaye is playing those buildup bass riffs.
Great, great and just unspeakably unique way to combine motion picture and motion of emotion in music in ears. waves in air and waves of light to eyes.
I can hardly breath, when listening this and Dirty Harry soundtracks. Somebody, but not me to do something in same time,no way.
I drive around town playing this and my Honda Accord thinks it's a '68 'Stang. I'm Steve of course.
absolutely fantastic
this is the real sound......................
This song is my National Anthem before bed😎
Oh shit, they're pulling me over, Mama told me not to come, but oh no, I pulled out that island green mustang 🐎 again... Loved every minute of it... Now I have to take out a mortgage to pay the fines 🤣
There's a lot of "Dirty Harry" in there, which isn't a bad thing. Love the music from both films. I love the way Schifrin builds tension and excitement.
+zimmelbot1 It would be more accurate to say that there's a lot of "Bullit" in "Dirty Harry" since Bullit came before after all.
Dirty Harry is Schiffrin's best soundtrack overall, but the meat of Bullit, featured on this terrific mix, is plain awesome.
RIGHT ON!!!!….Tuco Ramirez….RIGHT ON brother!
I can just picture myself driving around the streets of San Francisco in either a green '68 Ford Mustang GT390 Fastback or a black '68 Dodge Charger 440 R/T while listening to this.
This is one good rare extended version of the song, and it is deserving of being used for a few good car chase scenes.
For example, let’s say Bo & Luke, let alone Coy & Vance, were in the General Lee being chased by Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane of Hazzard County, and suddenly out of nowhere coming to their rescue and sending the 1977-78 Plymouth Fury cruiser of Rosco’s into a nearby gully is the 1979 Kenworth K100 Aerodyne of B.J. (Billie Joe) McKay of Milwaukee!
Another such good example, animation wise that is, would have a whole convoy of semi trucks headed for the Texas town of Arlen as B.J. McKay leads the convoy in question there to aid and assist Texas propane salesman Hank Hill and his friends, family, and neighbors as they battle it out with Patrol Officer Anthony Page of the Special Crimes Action Team (commanded by Anthony’s maternal uncle Captain Rutherford T. Grant) as the Special Crimes Action Team is after Hank Hill for helping to put narcotics kingpin Ted Wassanasong out of business.
Remember, that this is the very same Hank Hill from the animated series “KING OF THE HILL”?!
This is like heavy metal!
driving listening this sound is fucking cool!
Excellent! I totally get what you mean. That drive in the bass line and the brass man! :)
released 50 years ago today, so shout out to Bullitt
Best version i've heard! Thanks for posting and adding the longer version.
Good song that becomes a habit. I would listen to the car while driving.
I'm doing 140mph and no cops in sight...
Just don't try and spit out the open window at this speed.
I can already hear the sound of rubber being burned and the roaring engines of the charger and mustang
Very cool, great movie, great soundtrack...great job!
The 40 people who disliked it must be members from "The Organization".
And Prius drivers.
Back when movies were GOOD and had REAL soundtracks
I always like Steve McQueen movies he take every so seriously
