I love the way this song builds up, breaksdown, and then reconstructs itself, it's truly fantastic.
It’s a masterpiece
Perfecto!
This album opened up the pandoras box of acid jazz and experimental music concepts for me.
It's classic and as good today as it was when it was first released
Agreed ❤❤❤
Bring the acid jazz back😂
There’s no such thing as Acid Jazz. Just some bs.
@@EvidenceBasedMedsin You mean, "There's no such thing as Acid Jazz, only Jazz." Hell, acid is Jazz.
Herbie Hancock - Fender Rhodes electric piano, Hohner D6 Clavinet, ARP Odyssey & ARP Pro Soloist synthesizers
Bennie Maupin - tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, saxello, bass clarinet, alto flute
Paul Jackson - bass guitar, marímbula
Harvey Mason - drums, arrangement on "Watermelon Man"
Bill Summers - agogô, balafon, cabasa, congas, gankogui, log drum, shekere, surdo, tambourine, beer bottle on "Watermelon Man"
I played lead guitar in a cover band in the 70’s. This was one of favorite songs to play.
Did you play the whole 15 minutes?
Ironic, given that Herbie deliberately didn't include a guitarist in this band.
I played bass in a jazz trio back in the 90s and this was my favorite! So much fun, especially when you're locked in tight with the drummer, and that groove just begins to move people.🎉
Huge cross over hit. People who didn't like jazz liked it.
Herbie Hancock was at the forefront of jazz fusion with the electronic sound and this album was a masterpiece example.
the fact it only had two chords helped.😀
Where Miles Davis meets George Clinton
I had to go to my kids middle school concert to see the jazz band play this tune. The rest is history. Love every headhunter record.
Good for you
Man, I haven't heard this in a long time. My brother had this album and we played it loud. Yeah. Peace
Agreed.
herbie hancock was brilliant dude set the jazz, funk community on fire with this album
Is* :)
Real talk
1973, homeys cruisin in a new 280Z with dope sound. blasting this song, enjoying that red Columbian. Those were the days.
Agreed ❤
That's Columbian red and Acapulco gold and don't forget the B.l.gonga, those were the great Days .
@@MccoyMister Haaahaaa, you were there too. Every now and then, that Thai Stick passed through.🤣
Colombian.
This is my ALL Time Jam celebrating 50 years today
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I love the beginning bass,it's just so funky and gives off a good vibe and happy feeling.
Star wars did it first btw :p XD ^_^
@@chelseasorsa5730This album came out in 1973, a full 4 years before SW.
As far as I know, the bass is a synthesizer. But for sure it's funky like hell. You just cannot sit still while listening. 😁
dude this used to be my favorite song when i was around 10 or 11, now im super into prog. this song was a weird rock enthusiast in the making lmao, coming to revisit after many years!
My dad played this to me when I was around the same age
Herbie Hancock...one of the Greatest of all times!! BadAss!!!!
This is still a jam! 2024 and I'm still listening
❤❤❤❤
Memories!!! I was in the 10th grade when this came out, we were driving our band director crazy , this was our morning JAM before Mr. Boone would come into the band room, not that he didn’t love jazz, but looking back I think he got annoyed because we weren’t in TUNE,,LOLOLOLOLO, this was my introduction into Jazz, I hadn’t even heard of Bird, Trane, Miles , etc. at that time,.
Good for 😢
Good for you
50 years this day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeeeeeeeeeah!
I know, because it came out in '73, and I also came out in '73 😄
Wow I bought this on vinyl back in the late 1970's and never got it. Now I am old enough to appreciate it's genius.
5 words, funky jazzy souly fire beats 🔥
Agreed.
That's actually 7 words ☝️🤓
Man i was 9 or 10 yrs old when this dropped, mom and dad bought me and my brother these little portable tape players, i remember walking round listening to this very tune thinking how cool i was...LMAO!!!
You were indeed cool😅😊
Fantastic cut by one of the greatest jazz artists!
Agreed.
Herbie Hancock is the best that ever😂done it 🎉❤ for real , for sure!!!!+!!!
Classic Jazz Album Great Sound Funky 👍🎼🎵🎶😀📀📀 NYC
Love that groove
That funky bass and drums make this song work.
I've always loved this piece! One of the absolute best pieces of music of all time!! Herbie is a master of music!!
A real game changer of an album, a defining moment in Jazz Funk history with the release of this killer sminal album in 1973, which took Herbie Hancock onto another level, one of greatness with Paul Jackson (bass) Harvey Mason (drums) Bill Summers (percussion) as well as Bernie Maupin, a vinyl collectors must have
Bennie Maupin
One of the best side 1, track 1's of all time
That man was a genius!
Agreed.
And still is A genius!
The groove of grooves.
Man! Like, this is some funky shit
One of my favorites. Maying me wanna pull the vinyl out and listen to it the way I used to. Herbie Hancock...The Best
Bad Asssss Jam!❤
Drummer is a god.
Genius. Thank you Mr. Hancock.😊
Herbie Hancock also played with Miles Davis on the “Tribute to Jack Johnson” album. Brilliant track: “Right Off.” ❤️😍🥰
Just remember hearing this on late night radio when i was a teen and wondering why chart music was so dreadful when there was artistry like this floating around.
Gorgeous composition and excellent players,. I played this in full jazz band brass and the rest accompaniment in High School. It's needing further development to include that and much more. Brilliant, just the best what they did!
Pick up that horn, one never should think they are past on that element!
A classy classic period .
Back when I was a Rock and Roll guy then suddenly became a Jazz guy.
Good for you ❤
Great tune at our gigs. Played this about 300 times
Very very much power. Mucho saborrrrrrrrrr como decimos en Colombia 🎉jejejeje 😂
Peace, to the musical prodigy Mr. Herbie Hancock. Your arrangements and the harmonious blending of electronic music with conventional instruments. Set a cerebral experience as the listener emerses their conscious to the frequency of the vibrations of emancipated thought. Peace
Could listen to it the whole day on infinite loop.
Masterpiece💯
My older brother owned this LP
This song always makes me think of Toejam and Earl.
Absolutely bredda
What a game 😂
Me too !!!
La primera vez que escuché este álbum, lisa y llanamente exclamé...

No hay duda que el maese Herbie Hancock es un genio muy cabrón!
Pure GENIUS!!!!
Hello Mr. Hancock. I am a friend of a brother who is very dear to you Deigo Valentino aka Sabott Ali he is the brother of late Denise Valentino Hancock your late sister in law. We miss you brother and your beautiful music all the way from Marrakech Morocco. May God bless you and keep you.
Legend❤
I used to get to hear stuff like this during the day onlow-power AM radio station WBEE from Harvey (Chicago) (they didn't broadcast at night). What a blessing to people with no tape decks or FM radios in our cars.
Cool to hear
Love it
this thing plays in my city's central area, there's an advetisement of something on a billboard of a mall...
so many times i've walked past it, intoxicated and with friends, always when this track plays, vibes always spark up
ICONIC !
Outstanding 😊
I groove to this 🎉
GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cool‼️
If you somehow survived High School Big Band without EVER playing this piece, did you even go through HSBB?
I saw him,@ Syracuse, NY, @ Jazz fest this past week. Alongside with Gladys Knight, he is in his 90'$ ! Amazing social event. Closedown part of West Genesee street.
He's 83.
Lol 😅! He’s 83 years old!
But this sounds like a 38 year old!😎

This reminds me of Commander Keen soundtrack from the 90s video games. I wonder if they drew influence.

Anyone know if that lick @13:55 is a quote of something? I've heard it in other Jazz solos, wondering if it originated here or on another tune
I've heard it before too and it's driving me crazy!
