    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Bullitt (Steve McQueen) refuses to back down when the Charger trying to follow him takes it up a notch, leading to a chase through the streets of San Francisco.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    In one of his most famous roles, Steve McQueen stars as tough-guy police detective Frank Bullitt. The story begins with Bullitt assigned to a seemingly routine detail, protecting mafia informant Johnny Ross (Pat Renella), who is scheduled to testify against his Mob cronies before a Senate subcommittee in San Francisco. But when a pair of hitmen ambush their secret location, fatally wounding Ross, things don't add up for Bullitt, so he decides to investigate the case on his own. Unfortunately for him, ambitious senator Walter Chalmers (Robert Vaughn), the head of the aforementioned subcommittee, wants to shut his investigation down, hindering Bullitt's plan to not only bring the killers to justice but discover who leaked the location of the hideout.

Basically, they digitally " dropped " Steve McQueen into the driver's seat of a car sold in Europe, the Ford Puma, and digitally replaced the Mustang we see here with the Ford Puma. @@charlesvan13 The 390 was no slouch though. :-) My first car was a 1967 Ford Galaxie 500 2-door fastback with the 390 and three-on-the-tree, and it was wicked fast. However, I often wondered if something had been done with the engine to make it that fast, because after I sold it a few years later, I (of course) wanted it back (because my father had talked me into buying a 1974 Vega, which outright sucked), so every time a 2-door Galaxie appeared in the paper for sale with the 390, I went and looked at them, and none of them were nearly that fast. Possibly because they were usually automatics, or possibly because of other factors, such as gear ratios, etc. I really miss that car. 10 mpg city and 15 hwy., but gas was cheap.

    • @timhope1510
      @timhope1510 Před 5 lety +12

      Yeah they had cameras set up at 4 different locations and showed them in sequence to make the chase seem longer than it actually was. You can see it first from inside the car then outside the car coming to you then outside the car going away that's why the green beetle is in four different shots.

    what made this scene so great there was no background music , you can actually hear the tires squealing and the engine being roared , like your in the car at the time , I have no idea why HOLLYWOOD doesn't take notice to this

      @speedybostroe Před 5 lety +4

      Gotta say, the Need For Speed movie also does this. It may not be the best movie overall (acting, dialogue, storyline), but imo they did the car scenes really good. Also no cgi in there, and most of the time no music when there's driving. So for being a car movie, I really enjoy that one a lot more than most F&F-like movies.

      I don't understand why this chase is still being regarded as the best ever? Yeah, Steve McCqueen is cool and yes, the cars are cool. But the filming and editing is rather low budget to a point where it becomes almost ridiculous by today's standards. Like, for example, shooting the same scene from different angles hoping that no one would notice :-)

    • @piotrmalewski8178
      @piotrmalewski8178 Před 6 lety +12

      The chase is so famous because it was the fastest and bravest chase ever filmed back in 1968, and there were very little of film makers that ever attempted to make another chase like this. Also ,the chase is still impressive in comparision to other movie chases for some people because it features real, well executed sports driving while other filmmakers heavily rely on editing and actually slow driving, with a few low speed easy tricks such as handbrake turns (if any). As a rally fan and a person who took part in a few rallies as a competitor, I find this chase much more interesting than most of other chases ever filmed. I think only the 1970ties Vanishing Point and The Burglars (with Belmondo) hold the same level. Other chases are either slower, unrealistic or overedited (or, amazingly, altogether same time).

      Julius, you make a good point re: emergency services responding quicker but that's negated by all the injury and premature death that would not happen if cars, trucks, etc... did not exist. the greed of the auto and oil industries sickens me. i'm all for making money, as much as possible, as long as you do no harm. if you know about transportation history in America you know about the unnecessary demolition of the clean electric street car system in America and its being replaced by buses for no good reason (and plenty of bad ones). car races and fantasy driving schools are unnecessary. i would not mind them if they were not such big polluters. from what i can see even electric and hydrogen cars aren't totally clean, but at least they're environmental impact is minimal. manure spreading disease can be negated by sanitation and putting the manure to good use in fields, gardens, etc... it's certainly more convenient to own a car than rely on public transportation, no argument from me on that
