I recently visited San Francisco. I visited all the filming locations of Bullitt at the right time in the film. It was simply Amazing. I realized a Child dream: visiting San Francisco and smelling the Pacific Ocean Air from the Golden Gate. Thank You Steve Mc Queen, and Thank to Peter Yates.
What's really amazing is that someone who could make a pot boiler film like this also directed one of the greatest pieces of Americana ever put on film and he wasn't even from America, Breaking Away is such a snap shot of what America was like in 1979 especially to be a teenager then and even more so a teenager in an area where the job's that our dad's had didn't exist for us, all the angst, the being unsure of yourself and the world around you, he captured all that on film as if he was a teenager from some has been town himself in the late 70's, it's just amazing.
I saw it in Anaheim (drive in) the day it came out. I also years later (1972) had my daughter in the San Francisco General Hospital where they filmed the hospital scenes......LOVED IT
He actually did very little driving in the film, he blew so many shots that Yates eventually screamed "Put someone in that car who knows what they're doing!!!". This documentary was made at a time when McQueen was still going around saying it was him who jumped the bike in The Great Escape, so yea, they were going to blow it up like he did most of his own stunt driving in this film to create buzz over it. He may have been into racing cars but there world's of differences between that and stunt driving.

Indeed he is. Steve McQueen converted to Christianity a year or so before his passing. Pastor Greg Laurie & Chad McQueen, his son made a great documentary"Steve McQueen American Icon" that covered that story & all kinds of cool McQueen trivia for fans like us. Look it up.
What makes "Bullitt" great, really, is that it is shot in a distinctive style that reminds me of a Dick Tracy Cartoon from my childhood. The camera shots and angles, the stiff dialogue of the cops, and the clothes all combine to make the movie unique, and you have to kinda be looking for it to appreciate it. Fot example, I love the shot of the doorman at the motel calling his syndicate superiors, holding the door such that he gets a good look, and his super deep voice. Little stuff, like the garden party, these ladies, the camera shot of their legs, wow!
Steve McQueen in my view was the king of cool actors for his portrayal of frank bullitt in the movie bullitt a actor who's committed to fine acting in all his films. ✨👍
When it came out, you saw it on the big screen and the feeling of being in the cars during the chase -especially going up and down the hills - really gripped and twisted your guts.
@@TCCTTWH that film was playing just up the street here in LA back in 1968 & there were a lot of kids who would leave after the car chase. people could buy a ticket save the stub and return to watch the car chase again. the two or three movies would play all day. 11 am to a little past midnight. the 1960's Rocked 👍
Love Bullitt!! This was a great behind the scenes movie. I always thought the hospital personnel were not actors, they didn't speak their lines like an actor would.
Steve McQueen was an extremely great actor. This film will remain a classic forever. Best car chase ever ! ! I continue to watch the whole movie over & over often.

What I always thought was interesting to this film was that Bill Hickman didn’t look like a typical Hollywood bad guy and instead, with the black glasses, looked like an everyday businessman behind the wheel of the Charger. His co-rider with the 12-gauge shotgun did however look every part of a bad guy. I also always loved Bill’s slight smirk while looking in the rear view mirror thinking he’s ditched McQueen.
car chases were humdrum up until bullit came out,then the studios upped their game and have been ever since,they know a good car chase always works,and steve did just that,and prob the coolest dude to do so.
Anyone reading the following will be interested in knowing that my oldest son is writing the script for a screenplay for an epic movie about James Dean, but it isn’t a biopic or a documentary, let alone a docudrama, but actually it’s an epicomedy. Meaning, a comedy movie of epic length, which means that it could possibly have screentime of about possibly five or more hours, give or take a few odd minutes in the editing room. Anyway, this behind the scenes documentary made for the simple promoting of “BULLITT”, was indeed released theatrically, and just like all other short subject pictures, these theatrical behind the scenes documentaries deserve to return to theatre screens again, and thus replacing the advertisements of local businesses that modern day theatre managers are showing before the main attractions.
Movies shot on location are expensive to produce. But it makes them memorable and iconic. Bullitt, The French Connection, and American Grafitti are examples. People never forget them. Most of we get today is computer-generated graphics or studio shots with AI support. GAG! Forget it.
I watched the whole movie recently, well most of it. It's a little dry 55 + years on. I lost interest after the chase scene and came up just short of finishing it. But that chase scene remains riveting to this day, maybe even more after so much time has passed.
And the local guy who crashed into his 1955 Porsche Spyder 550 was over the legal limit for his blood alcohol level, but the coroner’s inquest found him innocent due to fact that he had a lot of political pull and influence.
After Bullitt came out, movies like The Seven-Ups, The French Connection and others had car chase scenes, reviewers would comment that the latter mentioned chases were better than the one in Bullitt... no, no they weren't!
Even John Wayne 'The Duke' a really nice Seattle car chase scene in 1974's 'McQ' (**Likely a ode to Steve MacQueen) , and over in Europe in 1971, a Jean Paul Belmundo /Omar Sharif film 'Le Casse' /'The Burglers' had a long Car chase scene in Piraeus, Greece.
San Francisco is basically a city of hills like 30 or so depending how you count them. The funny part was the Editing and continuity was that VW Bug appeared like 5 times in the chase ha. Common for the time actually. And why didn’t they upgrade the Mustang to positraction, ol’ Pegleg always bugged me lol.
I’ve never seen the portion of uncut footage where Hickman clobbers the static camera adjacent to the white car. Now you know why the editors had that little clunk in the continuity in the Final Cut.

Bill Hickman and photographer Sandford Roth, who later took the picture of the wrecked Porsche, were following Dean in a Ford Station Wagon with the trailer of the Porsche, and arrived on the scene of the accident minutes after the crash.
I absolutely love this movie, very realistic in many ways, but the only criticism i have is the green VW that kept reappearing during the chase scene. I am surprised the director and editers didn't correct it. Oh well too late now.
Also, the Dodge Charger lost 6 hubcaps during the chase scene…lol. Although it was probably the best chase scene ever filmed (w/o CG), it did have some inconsistencies.
Hollywood is stone cold dead. Steve McQueen made Hollywood great among a few others. Miss real good movies. Its all crap now coming out of Hollywood . I have boycotted Hollywood since 2006. Too political.
I saw it at the Odeon in Watford UK as an American military dependent. The audience was aghast at the gunplay in the terminal. Later three plain cothes police were shot in London. Harry Roberts the perp was an ex paratrooper who hid himself in the woods in Hertfordshire. He ran out of food. The cashier made him. He was captured by the RAF Regiment and Police The BBC and ITN had lots of documentaries about shootouts in the US. They showed the French Police at a range. The French Police felt that an officer was not in uniform without a gun.
too bad the writers and the director did not have that same commitment to reality. the script is an absolute disaster. the funniest thing is that the movie revolves around the premise that there are going to be US Senate subcommittee hearings held to investigate the mob, and these hearing will take place - in San Francisco!!! That's right, not in DC. And Chalmers, the main antagonist of the film, does not seem to have a job. He is protecting this mob witness (Ross), but he's not a cop, or a mayor, or a district attorney. He's just some guy that somehow says he will get Bullitt promoted if he protects this witness. How? Yeah, he's a rich guy, and probably has connections, but why is Bullitt taking orders from him? Why is Chalmers responsible for this witness? And Chalmers says that if Ross dies, he will present his deposition at the subcommittee hearing. What? Under what authority would he do that? "hey, I am the rich guy that is telling the police to protect the witness (even though i am not the district attorney or mayor), and so now i will read his deposition." And then throw in the meaningless and slooooowwwww scenes with the girlfriend on top of it all. It is all just a hot sloppy mess.

Agree. Also, this movie features the worst two assassins. They shoot one cop (who can obviously ID him/them) in the leg. Then they shoot the unsuspecting target in the shoulder. They take their time leaving the hit. It's not some rushed mistake. Incredibly bizarre. The Friends of Eddie Coyle is a masterpiece though.
So when it comes to doctors and nurses in a hospital they had to use real people in these roles. When it comes to playing architects they used actors? As an architect I’m offended by this decision!! 😜
Then the architect is asking about the velocity of one pipe into a 5” pipe…Steve McQueen should have said: “hell if I know, call the plumbing consultant that’s his role on this project.”…apparently the screen writers needed an architect helping them write the dialogue too.

I watched this movie when I was 9 years old and now I'm 65 & I still can't understand this movie.
Not a great movie is it, just great car chase.I prefered the get away as a movie.

The car shown at 7:30 was also used in the filming of "Duel" for all of the low angle shots of the car and truck
