- Small SUVs are extremely popular, combining off-roading capabilities with style, and comfort, so I've put three of these compact 4x4s against each other in a head to head group test. Will the Suzuki Vitara reign supreme with it's high tech cabin or will its Japanese compatriot, the Honda HR-V take the crown? Perhaps the Peugeot 2008 will surprise them both and dazzle with it's fun driving style. Stay tuned to find out what I really think of these small SUVs in this head to head review!

Bought the Suzuki Vitara S AllGrip. Been driving it for about three weeks and I love it. Such a fun car to drive. And it works really well in bad weather conditions.
4WD benefit comes in when driving in heavy snow. Vitara is perfect for that and you don't have to spend Land Cruiser money.
I owned a Suzuki before, and yes indeed it's always a fun car to drive.
Thanks Mat for giving me the right car options to buy.
Vitara for the win for me!
Practicality: 👍👍👍👍

Wind Noise: 👍👍👍 (Play some nice music this will be resolve).
I allready ordered a Suzuki...simply the best.
cheers
Mihai Ambrosa that's good, can u pls share ur vitara experiance with me, how is comfort, quality, fuel consumption etc etc
Mihai Ambrosa
Has it been already delivered to you?
Vitara or Sx4 S-cross ?
Brroooooo how was the vitara??
Your opinion?
I have the vitara and while I agree it is a bit plasticy how often do you rub your hand on the dash. other than that I agree it's fun to drive, cheap to buy and looks good which were the main selling points for myself.
Dan Brown My point exactly. I do not understand the obsession with soft touch plastics!
its just me that the first time i enter a car i need to scratch/touch every painel to see the quality?
wrap it with leather bro
good point, there are plenty of interior custom shops that can do a great job on simple door and dash trims. much cheaper than manufacturer styling options....
in any case, the Vitara S is a total bargain, you wont get a Golf with all that kit for anything like the price.
Soft touch materials absorb road noise bouncing around the cabin.
OMG.... I find this channel videos to be super fun to watch and pretty helpful.
I have driven the 1.6L and the 1.4L Vitara. Definitely take the 1.4L turbo. Might be a little more expensive but the pick-up is so much better with something like 20% more torque. For everyday usability, the 1.4L turbo is awesome.

In what sense it's more expensive?
@@caviar_lounge in my country the 1.4 turbo is more expensive to buy than the 1.6
@@ProductofNZ obviously it's a turbo charged lightweight unit with 20% more power and 60% more torque.
@@Jasontvnd9 obviously
I’ve had a Vitara S for 6 months now. I average 48mpg over mixed driving. Suzuki have under played the performance, up to 60 its as quick as my 2012 C class coupe. A lot of journalists have recorded around 8.5 seconds 0-62. In Hungary, where it’s built, they reckon the engine output is closer to 165bhp rather than the advertised 138bhp. Drives like a warm hatch and you can forgive the dash materials and lightweight doors for that.
165 no but 153 yes.
Suzuki like to understate 0-60 times , this engine in the 975kg swift sport is doing 0-60 in the 7-7.4 second range.
I font know about the 0-60 but it dont arf go
I love my 2006 1.9 petrol Suzuki, but too many cup holders and not enough storage bins for stuff like 2 stroke oil and a can of petrol. The back seats are difficult to fully remove. Reliability has been excellent so far (6 MOTs and no repairs needed yet). I wouldn't describe it as fun but nearly every passenger has commented on how safe and comfortable they feel. Bought it because it felt so solid compared to Toyotas and Hondas I tested.
I just love watching reviews from this guy, just like this review i dont give a shit about these cars but i watched it
You would see the advantages of 4x4 on snowy or slippery road, also on gravel or on some harder off-road, it makes very big difference, but great review by the way :)
I really wonder if VW is offering a completely different Golf in the UK!!! Are the plastics in the console much more durable and better looking than these are offered hier in Germany!!!??? I find the plastics in my Golf not better than these in the Vitara and they're very sensitive against sunlight in 2 years they're looking like they had a chlore bath. It would be much more realistic to use another threshold to measure the plastic quality. Besides have you ever made a long term test of a VW product?
Great straightforward no bullshit quick and conscise review.... Thank you
Please do a review of the kia cerato/kia forte sedan. Im not sure if I should purchase it and your opinion would really help
Great review! Any chance you guys at CARWOW can review the Ssangyong Tivoli or Korando?
yes!
Perfect review with an unbiased view great job Matt.
Waited for this vid for a while now. Thanks Mat !
I have Peugeot 2008... and I don't really know HOW can you not set driving wheel in a proper position. I had absolutely no problem with that - nothing obscures the dials! And I find dial position being much better than the classic one.
How is it fuel consumption
My thoughts, exactly...
I just bought 2008 and I must say,i was little bit worried about all that "i can't see anything bcs steering wheel" hype.
But when I sat into the car, there were no problems whatsoever.
I love Japanese cars because they're one of my favourites I always love both the Suzuki and Honda they're very reliable
@Yule Calma They would be more expensive, countries in Europe prefer mini SUV-s like the Vitara
Just bought a vitara 2018 model I was looking at the Peugeot 2008 but the vitaras cabin just seemed bigger and more spacious and the Vitara zips along really well.
Me too, I also decided between those and ultimately the vitara is the best
Also the comment section here is full of vitara enjoyers 😀
Good choice Japanese is the best
This is a great comparison. love your coverage carwow keep up the great work.
no review with Suzuki S-Cross 2017?
To me of these 3 the Vitara wins hands down it's the best compact crossover 👍
Whats the Vitara build quality like? I've has Suzuki bikes before and they were much 'thinner' on build quality than any other bike I've owned. Does that trickle through to cars?
I believe ppl buy awd cars mostly for uphill driving in winter time. I am surprised how carmakers can do stupid things like only touch climate controls, screens. Speaking on mobile while driving is illegal but messing with touch climate controls and looking down is ok.
With modern winter tires traction in the snow is not really an issue on front wheel drive. People are not getting stuck driving up and down the alps to get to their Ski hut. FWD rally cars are doing just fine in the snow as well.
Keep tire socks in the car just in case it's really going uphill and the road is all iced up.
I agree on the touch screens though. I miss the old radios with numbered buttons for the favorite stations. Instand access without looking instead of scrolling through a list. I wanted a C4 cactus but even the heater is controlled through the touch screen and it sometimes takes forever to start up or freezes up in the winter so you can't turn the heat up.
@@Hamachingo Exactly! I almost purchase the C4 but when i see the horror touch climate controls i run out from the store instantly:)
Try testing the speakers in your car reviews
YES
I love Suzuki , I bought myself an sx4 s-cross in november 18 and is great !
Could you please do a review on the Mitsubishi ASX
wd love to kno how wd the Vitara fair with the optional DualClutch....
Can you provide your thoughts on the Vitara 1.0 vs 1.4? Also between manual and automatic? Thank you. Love your reviews and would appreciate your comments.
Not Matt (doh!), but I've tested the two with the same equipment levels. The 1.4 definitely feels faster than the 1.0. The 1.0 is not that slow, but you just feel it less powerful than the 1.4 (as it's expected). Both I've tested were manuals. Fuel consumption was about the same. I've went for the 1.4 in the end.
"I'm having loads of fun in this 1.4 turbo Vitara but you don't want it because the shit 1.6 is good enough..." Nah mate.
Tom Millard But, the 1.6 is near unbreakable for city driving, which is what the Vitara will be doing a lot.
@@mipmipmipmipmipnailed it
It allways winds me up when the presenter says "What a great little car". The Suzuki Vitara is like a Japanese version of the Range Rover sport. A little car is the Swift or a Smart Car.
Dimension wise the Swift is actually very similar to the Vitara, about 30cm shorter but of the same width. Smart car is over a metre shorter than the Swift!
hey mat please do a review on the new toyota chr please i really loved the shape of that car i hope it dosnt dissapointet me...
Just checking, what is the model levels of the Honda and Peugeot?? Are they top of the range like the Suzuki?? Entry level, or mid-range??
Matt channelling his inner Paul Daniel's ..."Now that's magic!" ;p
Three words, tyres, tyres, tyres. Then you would see a huge difference in these cars. Most have summer tres as Standeds.🚗🏴👍
The vitara is a lot cheaper than these two in my country
Which country m8?
@@JA-rn5qv I guess he is Hungarian, (I am too) because vitara is manufactured here and thus it is cheaper, and a great bargain here.
@@tamasbakai2026 Vitara is cheaper than those other 2 in most countries. But yes it is a good choice for those looking for value. Some other brands focus mainly on looks or latest technology but Suzuki focuses in value and reliability
do a review of the discovery 4 and 5 i would like to see a comparison
William Stevens in maintenance costs?? Hahahaha 😂😂😂😂
My old Mazda Demio does that with the rear seats as well. Granted they flip the other direction but similar results.
Ok so I’m biased I have a Vitara but I have tried all 3 and others. It was a replacement for my Jeep Cherokee, a proper off road vehicle. Only the Suzuki was any comparison and gets me everywhere off road I have to go.
If you want "magic seats" you should look at the old Toyota Yaris Verso. I've just traded my 1.3 2000 model in (due to a serious, rear rusty floor issue, I had ignored it for too long!) for a 2008 and boy do I wish I still had my Toyota. 2 cars in 1 as the back seats (except for the small removable centre piece) fold away into the void beneath the front seats. Refit the floor boards behind the front seats and you have a small van. 2 glove boxes. A small one above and a large one below. Storage spaces ABOVE the sunvisors and a small cupboard with a fold down door in front of the rear view mirror. Small storage spaces doubling up as door arm rests with larger door pockets below. 2 cup holders by the gear lever and another one behind the handbrake between the front seat backrests. Storage spaces below the dash below the steering column and one next to the glove box. The middle rear seat back folds down for a tray area and two more cup holders. large pockets in the backs of the front seat for old school atlas or maps. When I cleaned it out before I went to the dealers, I managed to fill 4 platic carrier bags with stuff me and my wife had collected over the last nine years! Why they never continued this car is beyond me! The 1.3 VVTi engine was nippy, responsive and never, ever let me down.
Where's the captur and the Juke?
Advice, you should start to make some serious criticism regarding the seat of the cars. No one does it and in my opinion it's the most important thing, due to the time we spent on them. Personally I would like to see that instead of the plastics. If you really wnat a car it's not hte plastic quality that is going to sell it, or detur you frm buying it... My thoughts!!!
Tiago Ruivo Agree, comfortable seats is a huge factor in a buying decision.
at least to me... Way more important than many things normaly reviewed...
agree with you but they shy away from it because seat comfort is very subjective since everyone's shapes and sizes are different. if a reviewer says it's super comfy then someone buys a car based on their advice (without test driving the many other alternatives) and finds out the seats are actually uncomfortable for them (relative to how comfortable it could've been in another car), it's bad rep for the journalist. they try to keep it to objective factors.
Yes you are right, however the relevance compared with the plastic quality or if you a sun roof or any of these non fundamental things in a car, is bigerr... Just saying!
Hi Mat! Hi everyone I have a difficult one for you. What is at the moment the most affordable 4x4/Awd capable offroader (with low gear ratios preferably) as in a compact or sub compact in a budget suv with the most luxurious interior and technology? Is it this Vitara? The new 2018 Jeep compass/renegade trailhawk or even the new c4 aircross from citroen which do you think?
mazda cx30
I think that people who buy this kind of car are looking for style more than bargain, it's a less sensible buy than for a supermini for example. So the Vitara with it's "not posh at all" look, both inside and out is the best bet for Suzuki. Peugeot, Honda or Mazda, Renault or event Jeep seem to have better proposition for these customers.
$20K-$30 cars... wants $60k infotainment system in them
Do a review on the Toyota c-hr
The honda HR-V has AWD here in the states
So the 1.4l turbo its only for sale on UK and australia not in asia like india?
Diamond Dog bro the Vitara is not even sold in India haha. Forget about getting the 1.4L turbo engine.
I own a 2006 grand vitara manual with only 70k miles smooth ride no wind noise no problems. 😁
nice review
When vitara was released in India it won the car of the year award
Picking up my Peugeot 2008 GT line today! I decided between that and the Mazda CX-3. Problem with mazda is that it's entry lvl auto costs similiar to the so much more luxorious feeling of the 2008 GT.
how has reliability gotten better with peugeot?
The rear bench in the 2008 is actually fixed, it doesn't slide.
I drive a 97 Swift and I can vouch that Suzuki cars are fun to drive.
Honda is the classiest car here, but the Vitara is cool and well priced. Least appealing car is the 2008 IMO but it is still nice though.
Hi mat, has Citroen made any small SUV like vitara.
prateek bhatt, yes, the c4 cactus, some say it is
Matt, what's your favorite SUV you've ever reviewed?
Hallo suzuki indonesia? Vitaranya gk di pasarin di indo?
The vitara in with two tone split paint, in mid spec is a great all round cheap car. That and the seat Ateca are probably the best buys in the class.
Just what i really need to see - medium suitcases and carry-ons stacked into the boot !
Please review the Ford Ka+ 😊
id love to see this remade for 2020 versions
Believe me, the awd matters when there's snow and ice!
please when you say mph and mpg just edit the video and write how much kph and l/100km it is... otherwise great show :)
That impression of contemptuous french was spot on
How did you manage to make December look like spring?
We may have filmed this a little while ago…
That's about what I thought.
AWD is awesome in snow!
Winter tires are better.
Ehm, it's illegal to drive without winter tires from a certain date here...(Here being Germany)
Benjamin Brender It's not a rule in most countries.
Hm, depends on how much snow and cold you have I guess. I just think it goes without saying if you even plan on going anywhere in the snow with a car you should have winter tires, and in that instance a car with AWD will be awesome :)
AWD with winter tyres in snow is awesome!
Peugeot is the better one
But overall if you consider things carefully it would be the Suzuki that wins but not by far
Is the vitara noisy inside?
Vitara! You've gotta be mine one day! Also, Matt, are you sure that 1.6 engine will let this Suzuki be as fun to drive as with the 1.4 boosterjet?
nice question! No turbo choice where I live
The Suzuki is so good I had one for 3 years but I’ve upgraded to a Peugeot 2008 gt line that I prefer to the vitara but this is the regular non gt line vs vitara, and the vitara is better than the non gt line Peugeot because I’ve tried a standard p 2008 aswell
I do wonder why Peugeot don't sort the fuse box for the UK anymore. Is it a structural thing, or just a cost-saving measure? I doubt they've moved the fuse box since the 07 range. It does mean that the manual pouch has to be stored somewhere else which is a little naff. I fear for the new 3008 as a result.
Cost saving most likely, they have to change more in the production line of the dash and probably some other components need to be modified to fit (cables etc..) .
Also they're also a bit stubborn in doing things their own way for example automatically stopping the radio when you turn the engine off which is a Peugeot thing.
No XLV?
Price please
If there were car reviewer reviews, Mat would win hands down.
*VITARA ❤️❤️❤️*
Im 1.95 cm. No headspace for HRV and 2008. I havent tried Vitara yet!
well in Japan vitara is called Escudo and Honda HR-V is called Vezel
Grand vitara.....from the heritance ....vitara its a fantastic and fun to drive....one of the vehicle i loved to brought and loved from Suzuki manufactures and designers
When will vitara come in India
The problem with the steering wheel obstructing the dials is the problem with probably all the new Peugeots. That's because they place them on top of the dashboard. It's ridiculous.
Is the Ford Ecosport in this category?
Philip Scott It's a bit smaller and a 3rd world car anyway.
Yes it's a B-segment car.
did you watch the review on that one when he was still in the other site? he had nothing positive to say about the car!!
Bela apresentação. Vai Brasil!
What about a review of the Suzuki s-cross!?
And a review of the alfa giulia!?
I want to see those!
I was in Suzuki today, they told me s-cross is the same as vitara
I can't justify this comparison each one is in a league of their own
It's in snow/ice the 4wd comes into it's rights, Matt.. Only a percentile drives these cars in heavy mud :)
yes, but in this segment is not really that important, by the way the Model S rwd is better in snow ice than most AWD SUVs...
Rui why is it not important in this segment? If you live in a country with cold winters it is important with 4wd. It is not necessary all the time, but it makes a big difference at least
For most people a set of winter tires is more than enough.
sic22l depends on where you live.
Butcheren0 No. From best to the worst:
- AWD with winter tires
- FWD with winter tires
gap
- AWD with summer/all season tires
- FWD with summer/all season tires
i also like suzuki bcz of its practicality
A Smart car can follow those cars in that offroad test...
I'd like to see how Fiat 500X compares to them
Peugeot should bring their range to Asia. It will sell like hotcakes here! 80% cars here are from the price range that they are expert in.
I was a owner of Susuki Vitara 1.6 Diesel all greep....it was a pleasure driving this car....unfortunatelly lost it (stolen) in month ago...
Thinking of purchasing the vitara can i ask how was it stolen was it keyless etc thanks
Oh the butthurt of Mazda/Nissan/Renault fans is coming
I'm driving a renault myself but the captur is nowhere near the cars shown in the video. So why bother comparing it?
I think the Mazda has the best design of them all. And everywhere I read, they only praise it as a car..minus the obvious things as it is not for tall people and etc
yes ikr
kamata93 nope
Juke the best still since 2010
oh.. u man..u r funny...Nice one buddy keep going
You do not want the 1.6 litre Suzuki vitara if you don't want to rev the nuts off it all the time (speaking from experience). It peaks torque at 5600 rpm. The 1.4 turbo keeps it smooth with punchy power delivery at low rpms.
I had an 2002 vitara which was much more rugged then today’s cars but it really got under my skin did that suzuki 😀
Always admired suzuki after that incredibly reliable car
Would buy another Vitara no problems but will stick with my porsche for now 😜
Vitara 1.6 or HR V 1.8 both in manual??
hrv... but it's much more expnsive. better choice is vitara 1.4 turbo automatic - that's just heaven
Beautiful car & video
I just enjoy watch Mat, he should be in Top Gear instead LeBlanc
Everytime I see the right hand sided car reviews, I think that minute to minute the driver is going to die :D :D
