How to Find a Tailor You Can Trust | Make Your Clothes Fit Better

  • You want your clothes to fit better, but the thought of going to the tailor is intimidating, and you don't know where to start. This video outlines the exact 5 step process I use to find a tailor, test them out and nurture a long-term relationship.
Fit is the most important aspect of style. If you don't believe this, look at the old photos of me in this post. You can see how I used to dress before I understood the importance of fit.
Wearing clothes that fit will literally make you look taller, thinner and even more athletic. But if you wear clothes that fit poorly, you will look shorter, fatter and less competent that you really are. At the end of the day, the best way to make sure your clothes fit is to get them tailored.
I'm talking about good old fashioned clothing alterations. Because the reality is, clothes are mass manufactured to fit the average male, who happens to be 5'9″ and slightly overweight. If you're already getting your clothes tailored, good for you! You've taken the most important step toward dressing well everyday.
If you've never been to the tailor, it's okay. I understand. Going to the tailor for the first time can be intimidating. You're probably wondering: How do I find a good clothing tailor? What do I tell them? Do I have to know my measurements? What if they mess up my clothes? Is it going to be expensive? What if I waste my money?
These are all legitimate concerns, but I promise you have nothing to be worried about. I'm going to teach you how to find a tailor, how to “test” them out and how to build a lasting relationship.

Dude buy a cheap sewing machine. some alterations are fairly easy to do it yourself like t shirts, dress shirts, shorts and pants. If you learn to do the basics it'll save you tons of money since you'll probably have to tailor everything.

After the two ladies in my town failed on big levels, I went on a whim to the next town over where I saw a seamstress shop.
Went in we talked briefly, she has altered 2 jeans , 2 dresses for my wife and 3 suits for me. She is fabulous.

I love that this is actually useful! Thank you so much for the advice.
Saying this as a poor woman in college, who is 5'10, it costs at least $60 to find a pair of pants that are long enough for me. And for some reason skirts and dresses are not in style right now, so generally I just have to scourge Goodwill for something that is nice. Half of the time they are just an inch too small or too big, so the thought of a tailor has been bobbing in the back of my mind for ages. I can't wait to try it out, this has definitely given me some confidence and motivation.
    (edit: Goowill to Goodwill)

When I find a new tailor I usually have one or two “ test shirts” that I bring to them. These are usually old shirts a have that don’t really fit me or shirts I don’t care about in case the shirt is ruined. I think it’s important to never have the first item you bring to the tailor be something you love or can or replace. I have even gone to the thrift store and picked up a dress shirt to “ test” a tailor in order to preserve the shirts I care about until I know they know what they are doing.

What a great video! I haven't been able to find a single pair of work pants that fit me right. I started thinking, you know I spend so much time at work, with all the other things that I focus on and pay attention to, the way my work clothes fit should definitely be up there on the list of priorities, but what can I do? Go to thrift store and just try on loads of pants until something fits okay? And then it hit me...I need a tailor! But do people even still do that? How would I even go about getting a tailor? You guessed it, the internet! That's where I found your video, now I'm off to find my tailor! Thank you sir.

The constant issue I have, is with sleeve length. Jackets invariably fit otherwise perfectly, but the sleeves are always too long and consequently hang over the hand, rather than stopping appropriately at the wrist.

Sometimes you have to give your tailor a second chance. When I dropped off some pants he felt a bit cold, but when I went back to pick them up he was very friendly that day and the hem on the wool dress pants was so good you could not see any thread on the outside of the pants.

  • @mbvglider

Take a blazer or a sport jacket before you take a shirt in. Most alterations on a tailored jacket can be undone, not so with an altered dress shirt. You want a tailor who is willing to alter the side seams and not just the center seam of a jacket (yes, some jackets can be done down the center, but it's generally not the best approach). Unless they do anything egregious, a better tailor down the line will be able to fix it if it doesn't come out perfect. I wouldn't trust someone with a shirt until they showed me what they can do with a jacket.

The Modest Man yes very true. I've only gotten one pair of jeans messed up from a tailor thank gosh lol. but also if you doing anything expect Heming make sure the tailor is understanding what your saying. I wanted a pair of jeans tapered from the knee down meaning they get skinny from the knee down and she had no idea what I was talking about and just hemmed them on the bottoms instead.

Good video Bud! One quick observation, but take as you will. The dark chair kind of blends in with darker clothes like your jacket. Makes it appear you have a wonky fit in shoulder of your right (left in video) which is kind of distracting in a fit video. So I will use those when testing out tailors to see if they are worth using for my tailoring needs. Of they screw up my jeans.. won't cost me anything but the fee to have them done.

Only four tailors in my city...Indian and Turkish with limited english. It seems to be what they want not the paying customer. Every pair of trousers, chinos or jeans I purchase requires adjusting. Three issues so far with the length and when I complain the Turkish guy smirks and can be somewhat rude to this I make myself understood...This is not a charity nor are you doing me a favour...it is what I the paying customer wants not you. I learn the hard way.
