This piece is hard to pull off successfully because it requires such deep, skilled and committed ensemble from the massed brass. Any wavering of intonation or loss of that 'oneness' of sound wrecks the whole thing. But in 1967 (as with several US orchestras at the time with their post war expat makeup) Berlin still had a brass section of rare skill and beauty of sound (the VPO and Concertgebouw have also had impressive brass at the time). But with the BPO under maestro Von Karajan's famed 'wall of sound' approach we get something that it would be almost impossible to replicate today. It is wonderful to be able to compare recordings over the decades courtesy of uploaders and youtube.
Absolutely poetic and magnificent! I have heard other interpretations and some of which are disasters and chaotic or even just noise simply this is a difficult piece to deliver. This version is the best. Karajan was in his best in the whole sixties and early seventies. The ending is breathtaking - the whole orchestra is so synced in harmony that it feels like the whole orchestra has become one piece of instrument.
Deservedly so, Liszt will always be remembered for his virtuosic piano works, but this piece is a testament to his skill when writing for orchestra as well. He had a flair for the dramatic, and that comes across well on any instrument!
As years goes by, Karajan rises to the category of a "living God" of the 20th century and on... Sixties and early seventies were the period of his art´s peak as lucidly points @yanhongtong. Very few masters reached such a mastery, sound and power. "The power of the force" had nothing to do with Karajan´s and BPO power.....😂😂 Each time I like more and most of his recorded renditions from this period. May God bless him for all the art he left us.

Very Teutonic, impressive, satisfying. It does take a heavy hand to bring out the best of Liszt. But, of course, it can be done with different emphasis. This was the romantic period in music so there is room for interpretation.

Wow, haven't heard this piece since I played it in my H.S. orchestra in the early '70s! Brings back a lot of memories...
Ditto, except that my H.S. concert band played this in the late '50s. I can never forget it.
I played this in my H.S. band in the late 50s. I agree completely. I have great memories.

It is possible here to see where Richard Wagner was influenced by Liszt's sense of musical sentiment & drama.
There's no doubt about that.
I already wrote it elsewhere, but it's like Beethoven and Wagner in one. What a grandeur!
grazie amico .
WOW.Great.
👏 BRAV-OOOOO 👏 BRILLIANT 👏

Sorry, my comments were premature. Upon listening to the rest of the performance, I noticed more nuance. Bravo!
The first symphonic poem.

von Karajan's best recording of this piece but the MP3 recording quality can not match the quality of the 1968 original. Pathetic.
Absurdly fast.
Barenboim is much faster and even Celibidache (!) is only a few seconds slower on his 1952 recording.
Do recommend your favourite performance. I'd love to hear it.
