From its premiere in 1998 through six subsequent seasons, the show suggested that women could get everything they needed from their friends. So, many viewers found it startling when the series finale directly contradicted the proposition the show had seemingly set out to prove. In the end, Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte's storylines focus on their committed relationships with men. So what message did the show’s writers send with this rom-com fairy tale conclusion? Here’s our Take on how Sex and the City’s ending disproved the progressive argument that it initially proposed, and what it left us with instead.

Back when it was aired, I watched Sex and the City along side Friends while new episodes were coming out (I'm old). I thought Sex and the City's entire plotlines (including Samantha's cancer story) and ending was a lot more matured than Friends (even though several plots overlapped... move to paris, can't have kids so they adopt, etc.), until the two movies ruined the brilliant ending. So I was surprised that you didn't like Sex and the City's original ending. I don't mind Carrie getting back with Big again because it wasn't a marriage, they just try again. And based on their personality, they deserve each other. I just feel like, a lot of people watch these shows like Downton Abbey and Mad Men, and are upset that they are different people than when they start out. Sex and the City fab four were cynical sour grapes 30 something Manhatanites. While I do think women can be happy without men, the men they ended up with (except Big) were all great people whom the women went through a lot with.
Noom is a diet, emphasizing calorie counting and restriction despite what they claim. Just like every other diet. Not a good look for a channel that speaks out against fatphobia in the media. I love the channel, but being sponsored by Noom or any other diet that profits off of people's insecurities is gross.
Noom encourage diet culture which is fatphobic. I hope you've stopped already your collaboration with them has you proclame yourself feminists.

Aiden got married and had kids and still kissed Carrie in the second movie. That would make him a cheater.
Stop putting Aiden to the pedestal. He was jugdemnetal, pushy, needy, utterly boring and did not care about Carrie's real wants and needs. Just because he was a bit more decent than Big, doesn't mean he would have been a good match to her.

That scene of miranda bathing her mother-in-law makes me cry every time. I get goosebumps, maybe because Miranda is an amazingly written character and seeing her so vulnerable is very touching.

The Mr. Bigs never change. It’s heart-wrenching but it’s reality. This ending would never happen. Carrie obviously has unresolved issues with her father abandoning her and she needs to STAY IN THERAPY and resolve those. She’s drawn subconsciously to men who will betray and abandon her like her father did. She wasn’t ready for Aidan, she needed to do that work first.

Aidan sucks. I hate Aidan worship. He didn't like anything Carrie liked or anything ABOUT her lifestyle! But everyone is so warped that because he wanted commitment with a woman who didn't want it with him, he is seen as a "nice guy." He wasn't a "bad man" or anything! But it's so cringey that everyone considers desperately wanting commitment no matter how incompatible two people may be a positive trait in a man.
And he was AWFUL when he took Carrie back and was going to sleep with that bartender!
Yes I get it. Carrie cheated on him and that sucked. But she did it with an ex with whom she had hisotry, in the early days of seeing this stranger Aidan, and then ended it, and confessed.
Why would he take her back if he was so resentful? Is he a child? And he was gonna USE the innocent bartender as a revenge fuck? He sucked. Aidan sucked.
You're right, the Mr Bigs never change. I hated that he did, it was so unrealistic that he just changed completely and that erased all the shit he'd put Carrie (and Natasha) through. And he's no prize or 'happy ending'.
I fail to see how Carrie’s strong desire for independence equates to her having daddy issues. The constant pull and tug of Carrie going between being fiercely single and in a committed relationship more so highlights women’s internalised anxieties about choosing to be happy with just ourselves or conforming to the external pressure to “settle” . Is that not the whole point of this video?

Showing Carrie smoking on a non-smoking party and Big telling her not to, and commenting that as "he didn't let her be herself"? No no no. There's a difference between loving yourself and being inconsiderate, disrespectful towards others while putting yourself on a pedestal, what Carrie was doing all throughout the series. I feel like this video applauds this kind of behaviour, even though I do agree that the ending was disappointing.

The funny thing is...I distinctly remember another scene from their early dating, where Big smoked a cigar in a restaurant (after asking the other guests for 'permission') and Carrie being very put off by his arrogant behaviour and lack of consideration.
I don't think the video is condoning her behavior as it points out that she's the anti-hero. But at the same time the series ended on a typical happy ending.
In the same vain Carrie smoked just to piss off Big because she thought that he felt she didnt fit in his life, i mean Carrie wasnt being Carrie there.

I’m conflicted. Big had a lot of issues, but after re-watching the show, Carrie was just as messed up. I prefer to take their ‘happy ending’ as two emotionally stunted and traumatized people finally getting their crap together.

ikr, i was all for Carrie first time around, but on a re-watch I found myself siding with Big in many of their arguments, and find that she creates a lot of the problems herself. I kinda loved him showing up at the end, the signs were there that he loved her, but struggled with coming to terms with it. She needed to be rescued.
Couldnt blame Big. He's been honest to her from the beginning and there are just men like that- she's just toxic and not content.

Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott and other female authors were given no choice on marrying their heroines off! You had to give your female character a “proper” ending or your book would not get published.
Yes I remember that Jane Austen did want to leave one of her protagonists single (can't remember which one at the moment) but wasn't allowed, also notable is that Austen never married herself

I see a lot of comments criticizing Miranda's ending and I understand that it may seem a happy ending cliche. But, I also thought that it was powerful in that it normalized a relationship where the woman is the 'professional' and primary breadwinner and the man has a less high stress and can be the kids' primary caretaker. I loved that the show never punished Miranda's choice of wanting to keep her job (even though it showed her struggles) and gave her a partner that supported her and allowed her to have a family. I always thought that both Charlotte and Miranda had the happiest endings since they had the most realistic, healthy relationships
I agree with you about the TV series, but her story in the movies was what made me mad. She does all this for Steve to cheat on her because she was busy being a mum and a lawyer, and she forgives him? I really, really hated that.

@@meggy0 It was necessary because up to that point, things always fell Miranda’s way and made her uncompromising, which is not always a good thing to be and it’s unrealistic. Plus a big factor of why she is uncompromising is that Miranda had a profound fear of being hurt, which has been a roadblock this series. At least that they didn’t just get back together and Steve had to regain her trust.

I am one of those "never married, never kids" and reached the finish line (too old for either) intact. The single life can be an amazing and exciting experience, but women are cheated out of this choice by society, media, family, friends, males... I had to set concrete bunker boundaries until everyone finally got it - she is free. How they hated that I was free, but most finally got over themselves and their egos as I happily live alone ever after.

I’d love a video on the “Beautiful Woman/Conventionally Unattractive Guy” trope. Often times, women including myself have a specific idea of their ideal man. Sometimes, we’re told our requirements are unrealistic. There are moments when our lists are unrealistic. However, it doesn’t change the fact society expects women to lower their standards for true love. Does society tell men that? No!

Throw us some exaples in movies and tvshows.most if not all shows have more things the "beautiful woman" is atracted to while she only has her looks and that fades overtime.
Although Miranda was the most independent and feminist of all, from the start of the series it has also been shown that she desired marriage and kids too WITH her career. By the end, Miranda had to overcome her cynicism and allow someone (Steve, her family, etc.) in her life for true happiness. I think in your Miranda video, you mentioned that the only thing she wasn't cynical about was her friendships and that's why she let her friends in her life and therefore, was happier in her friendships. So her ending is the demonstration that she can do/manage everything she desires to when she lets people in and lets go of the "control" nature she often likes to have. In my opinion, that would be character development for her.
In the finale episode, there is also a scene where the cinematographers paralleled Miranda and Carrie and I often think that it was no coincidence. Miranda was searching for her ailing mother-in-law while Carrie was running around in Paris (symbolically searching for her love/Mr.Big/herself). I think they made it very clear that Miranda's ending hits closer to reality while Carrie is still living in her bubble searching for "the deep, can't-live-without-each-other love" which is a standard that is bound to fail. Carrie's ending was the one I felt that was a betrayal of the show itself because neither Aleksandr nor Big was the ending she desired. It did not allow of a lot of character development for her either. It would be nice for her to evolve from her romantic fantasy to something more realistic.

The point of the Take un this video is not denying that you can be married and feminist, is to remark how misrepresented women who stay single are :)
I definitely disagree with the idea that there's one special someone out there that will complete you. Love is more than a feeling; it's a skill that you need to learn and work on. At the end of the day, we aren't as special and unique as we like to think we are and there are lots of people out there like us. Therefore, there are lots of people out there who have the potential to be someone who will put in the work to learn love with us!
Don't ever settle for someone who doesn't feel right because you're afraid they'll be your only chance. Sure, relationships will always have rough patches you need to choose to stick it through but there's a difference between that and forcing something to work when it isn't going to make you happy--just like the show demonstrates with Charlotte for example!

I'm torn with Samantha. When she fell for someone she fell heavily and hat the urge to live monogamous. I think in the long term, it would probably be hard for her to live with only one man. A naturally developed open relationship could have been the solution for this, but that was yet a too revolutionary thought for the show (and still is for most of media).
Carry, in my opinion, was not mentally grown up enough. She had lots of issues and didn't feel happy with guys that were actually decent. Mr Big also had major commitment issues, and he seems like the kind of guy who needs a lot of time to realize he even should start to work on those. So in my opinion, Carry should have realized that the relationship with Mr Big, even though tempting, was toxic for both of them, should have began therapy and slowly opened up herself to dating guys that would be good for her. The way the show ended for her and Big was highly unrealistic and fell into a worn-out trope that left a bitter aftertaste for me.

@@sortasofi254 In the movies Sam stayed true to her self and went back to singlehood. So Sam currently is the only one that lives up to the "Self and Sisters Before Misters" mantra.
1. Miranda's ending made sense. It was all growth. At one point in the show, she said that she wanted a family but she just didn't want to settle for the wrong guy. Steve and her family may not have been what she ever expected, but she didn't settle. She kept her kick ass career and got married in her own authentic way. Showing her take care of her mother in law and her child in no way took away her autonomy. Those were acts of love.
2. Charlotte's ending was fine. But I'm also annoyed at the myth of a beautiful woman falling in love with an ugly man.
3. Samantha's ending after the first movie was perfect. I think her character experienced a lot of growth through out the series while sticking to her single loving identity.
4. Carrie's ending was dumb. But I guess it makes sense if you look at it through the anti-heroine lens that you described. She got what she deserved.

@@raet9974 I always viewed the relationship between Harry and Charlotte differently. Imo the trope isn't beautiful girl falling for ugly man, but perfectionistic expectations being toned down to realistic ones.
Her story was growing up to reality, leaving behind her fantasies - be it riches, an outwardly handsome husband or a traditional family. Not everything that glitters is gold. As soon as she learned this, she saw how much more potential reality held, in her case, with a wonderful man such as Harry.
He’s not an ugly man tho, Harry has incredible sex appeal

I take issue with lumping a character like Miranda into this "betrayal." I think if anyone upheld the original message of the story, it's her. She never apologized for her career success, she showed real human flaws, and I believe she navigated her relationship on her own terms. She chose to be with Steve because she realized that she was in love with him, and she had the wedding that she wanted instead of following convention. I never saw her sacrifice her relationship with her friends in favor of a man the way some of the other girls did. If anyone showcased the spirit of self-love and the importance of finding happiness within yourself and on your own terms, it's Miranda. She just happened to find herself a true partner and father to her child (whom she never pressured to be involved in Brady's life) along the way. :)
Not to mention that when they both show up on the bridge, I cried with happiness. When Big showed up at the apartment I was like "Meh. Whatever."
I agree. And I do think buying the house in Brooklyn was compromise. When you have a kid you DO do what's best for them. If you can afford a house in Brooklyn with a yard, believe me, for people who live here, that's hitting the lottery. Signed, a 52 yo single, never married hetero with zero kids [never wanted them].
It's not a tv show, but it's notable that in Waiting to Exhale, three of the four characters ended the movie as single women

As for the "it happened when we stop trying"... My partner's cousin did fertility treatments for seven years, and gave up around her 40s. She is now expecting a baby at 50 years old. It's actually more common than you think because anxiety plays a HUGE role in conceiving and being able to carry the baby.
Yup I know people who got pregnant naturally after having a baby via IVF and also after adopting. It does happen to some women.

I absolutely HATED this trope when I was ttc and having fertility troubles. When we finally had our first baby with ivf I always assumed we would need ivf again for future kids. I mean 4 years of ttc without a single natural pregnancy, any rational person would assume that they are infertile without advanced medical intervention. But then it happened to me, I got pregnant with a surprise baby. This particular trope I think has a kernel of truth in its roots.
Tbh the mental health of the person carrying the baby is pretty important for conceiving but I don’t think most people realize that if you stress things less then it may work out better along with how you take care of yourself physically

It completely did. But it's typical Carrie. Blaming everyone around her so she doesn't have to face the fact that she seriously helped ruin that wedding all on her own.
I greatly dislike that Carrie ended up with Big, like a reward for her bad behaviour throughout the entire series. I would have been happy with a compromise: Carrie breaks up with Big for good and the last scene is she and the girls dressing up to go out and help her get back into the dating scene. That way she doesn't end the series single by choice but still having grown due to finally leaving her toxic relationship.

I liked that Samantha followed that typically Male story arc of being untamable until the most absolutely perfect person came along and turned them into a committed partner. It felt like a gender role reversal. The films went on to show the truth of that arc. The untamable will always need to be free. They will leave eventually not matter of "perfect" the partner is.
Perfect, uncomplaining and also significantly younger - just like all the ageing action heroes get!

And the fact that women had to marry for financial stability then. Those writers were all feminists anyway by creating female characters who didn't conform, eg ElizabethBennett. She wouldn't marry unless it was for love. Many women then had no choice. 19th century writers dealt with social and political issues for women, which was groundbreaking back then
This dynamic is exactly like Kelly and Ryan in The Office, except that shows know how terrible the relationship is, unlike this one.

Carrie ended up with Big but she ultimately wasn't happy within her marriage. She knew Big hadn't changed hence interrupting his conversation with the banking lady (Penelope Cruz) and her constant insecurities based on the fact she never thought she was good enough for him. They don't even seem comfortable in each others presence, even at home (aka gilded cage) Big isn't even allowed to put his feet up on their couch in Carrie's "show home" Big is semi relaxed! She is always tense because he isn't giving her enough attention or living up to her expectations. She acts out with tantrums and bad behaviour constantly then waits for Big to stop and affirm his love for her. Just a tiring mess 🙄

100% agree. The fact the Carrie kisses (cheats with) Aiden in the second movie, after all her and Big have been through proves that they both ultimately settled for each other and neither one was actually happy. I mean they're proven to be total opposite time and time again ex. She loves going out, he loves staying in. She hates cooking, he loves to cook. He's very type A, she's extremely disorganized. There's so much wrong and ultimately they wouldn't/shouldn't work together

That is so well put. I mean I just rewatched the movies, and this is obvious they are still playing some kinda role to each other and never affirms their real weaknesses, trying to put their BEST face in every situation even when they should actually COMMUNICATE way more about their issues. I know this is a show and is supposed to romanticize the love story, but it is up to an unrealistic point especially when I think about their everyday life in the 2nd movie, and try so hard to act like they are so fine when we see Carrie tries to put so much drama in their life, it's like she has always been used to DRAMA, not actual unsure Big.
carrie knows deep down she isn't big's type, either. the man clearly likes brunettes . even in the first episode, he completely dismissed samantha. but then we look at the women he seriously dated: 1st wife was a brunette. 2nd wife a brunette. that actress he wanted who paid him dust was a brunette. penelope cruz...same thing. women can be super insecure if they know their man has a type and she isn't it.
I thought Big jilting Carrie at the altar in the movie was so unbelievable. Dude had gotten married twice before!

I think we can come to the foregone conclusion that SATC works well only as a continuing TV series and not a movie franchise with self-contained stories in each movie.
the second movie is the bomb, Samantha yelling I have sex in front of Arabic men is classic.
I can relate to chasing a toxic guy it really is like a being hooked on a drug. The denial is so hard to overcome because you convinced yourself that "this time is different" because he actually used the word "sorry" or he contacted you first.
BUT I will never understand wanting a man to constantly humiliate me and then take him back just to prove he wants you. But then when things get "boring" you pick fights just to keep things intresting. The most annoying people are the ones that make huge scenes about getting thier heart broken upsetting thier families and friends to get back with the person but mad that no one supports it.
Ok I need to come to Miranda's defence. Miranda didn't have a great family relationship. Then her mother died and she was heartbroken. She was independent because she had to be as well as want to be. She took a while to fall for Steve. Steve didn't put up with her crap but loved her for it. She couldn't love to begin with because she didn't of her history. Then she finds out she is pregnant and what do you know she thinks she is doing it alone. But it all comes right because she knows her self worth and is more of a modern day woman. She is the bread winner and the mum. Then while she has all this on her plate steves mum is confirmed to have dementia. She doesn't want to know but then she too comes to the understanding that she is a woman who needs care. Aint nothing wrong with the way miranda was written. Her story makes sense as its more to what most women are living today.
I’m so glad you addressed Samantha’s (series) ending in your video on her. For me, that was the most disappointing and hypocritical part of the series finale, and one of things the movie did right.
Never thought of Carrie as a heroine. She's toxic and the limit was when she went for Aidan the second time.
And to be honest about Miranda - it didn't bother me. Unplanned things happened to her and she made choices that she wanted.
There's nothing wrong about wanting to have a career and a kid/someone you love by your side.

I hated the ending and hated the show after a certain point . Had the main character ended walking away( from both prospects) and staying in the city ending in her ny apartment writing I would have been satisfied . Now for the movie had she found a partner ( not big) I would have been ok with that but not in a screenplay way someone in the background
Tbh I think they were appeasing the fans. This is also another big thing that I dislike with popular TV shows. They create unique characters and story. Then started giving in to what they think their viewers want. They should've stuck to their guns. But then again I always knew they're gonna aim for a modern fairytale ending for this as it was getting more "mainstream". I don't think hbo will allow a bittersweet ending.

I always liked Charlotte and Miranda´s ending, and Samantha´s is alright and at least she had the battle with cancer to give her story more weight, but Carrie´s is difficult to accept. If I wrote the ending, Samantha would continue her lifestyle and Carrie would find a successful direction with her career and remain single.
Charlotte's ending is my favorite. She had the healthiest relationship with Harry even though he was the opposite of everything she wanted. We all want to be Charlotte.

But I like this video's point that women are taught to compromise and told they might not get it all with a partner (looks, personality, money, compatibility). While I appreciate Charlotte's individual growth and how she let go of her superficial projections of what the perfect guy/relationship is, I do wish she could've had a handsome partner in addition to him being kind, loving etc. I feel that she deserved that and I don't understand why women can't have both.

In the season where Ross meets Emily, and she asks him to move to London, he says he can't because his son is here. He hated being a part-time dad to Ben, so he was determined to not miss out on any of Emma's life. But suddenly it was okay for Rachel to move to Paris and take Emma with her? I didn't get it.

Why people won’t learn about all this I’ll never understand it saves you a world of trouble and you learn to duck out early from what simply wont work for you. Men with mommy or parental issues (households with a parent with an addiction like alcohol abuse) tend to be DAs, there you go, screening tool one, stable childhood. I think that most of us have a deeply engrained longing for a partner to share your life with.
I had my own mr. Big for years and it mirrored john and carries relationship perfectly. Reeling me in just to pull away over and over again. Dozens of in and outs and back and forths. Breakups and reunions. All controlled by him. After every heartbreaking, crushing discard, I would swear him off; But inevitably, eventually he would always creep back into my life after he was bored with whatever play thing had distracted him and taken his attention from me. . And I was so pathetic, I would take him right back. I didn't even bother trying to play hard to get or hard to get back, for that matter. It was like an addiction. Then last summer I almost died. I was in a coma for 9 days in the hospital for 45. And he never once reached out to me or my family to check on me and I finally realized it for what is was... Nothing. I havent spoken to him or even reached out to him since before I went into the hospital. I have to admit when I see carrie and big end up together, there's a part of me that still wants that but my life isn't a movie and real life Mr Bigs don't change.
Same with men. A lot of stories with a male protagonist end up in a relationship between the two leads.

Yes everything you said is so valid! But also I think it’s helpful to dispel the myth that that kind of love and companionship ONLY comes from romantic partners, and that one romantic partner should meet all the social needs- love, companionship, sex etc.
A person can get those various needs met by separate people in different configurations and still be fulfilled. For instance, the original friend group of SATC that we’re presented with in the beginning get their companionship and love needs met by each other, while getting their romance and sex needs met with men- but aren’t necessarily interested in settling down with a man in a way that shifts the love and companionship needs to that man.
I’m in my late thirties and I’ve lived with my best friend for years. We bought a house together. We both date men. We date around for romance and sex, but we’re functionally a platonic married couple. I’m not interested in getting into a relationship with a man that would progress to making him “my person” and living together etc. I already have my person.
And that works for us. I think if more people were taught that they don’t have to get all those needs met by one person, they’d be happier.

The only problem I had with the shows ending is not that Carrie loses herself but she has an opportunity to create a new chapter for herself and the writers never let her do it. The whole ending with Pertrovsky was a deus ex machina and it didn’t have to be. It made me so angry when she didn’t leave his museum opening and go to her party but that would’ve meant another season. Which they could’ve done there was enough fruit on that vine to do a whole season in Paris. But I think the tidy little ending that they gave all of the characters was disappointing on a whole.
I do agree with the sentiment that they did create fear in the four women when death was brought up as the only option for single women including Samantha. However, I don’t see it the same way in and Anna Karenina since I think Carrie made a decision to choose a new relationship and become a different type of person and the writers just didn’t let her do it. That to me is lazy writing.
I was so disappointed in the writers too when they did everything they could to force Carrie ending up with Big. It made her whole Paris storyline pointless and it felt like a huge loss of development for her character.
Exactly! I actually liked her with petrovsky. I thought they were both strong individuals with very different personalities. The relationship would have been interesting and would IMO make for a lot of development in her character.
And then, if Carrie were a writer, she would obviously have things to do in Paris besides wandering through the city all day...

Miranda's ending actually is completely understandable to me. She changed after having her son. She went from being a perfectly happy single woman to being a loving mother and fell in love with steve seeing him interact with and love their baby. I appreciated her arc

And isn't being a successful professional, while also having a fullfilling personal life, what most of us aspire to? So I tend to think people only applaud women 'evolving' into a life and lifestyle that suits the critic's ideology, not the woman's happiness and sense of personal agency.

Especially now that so many women are actually pursuing it, they're discovering that this great privilege men had of working 60 hours weeks unappreciated isn't as awesome as TV made it look. The issue is Darren Starr took a back seat after 2 seasons and Michael Patrick King took over story wise. He's very superficial and that shows in how the show ultimately progressed. Not gonna lie, it was a fun watch but no payoff.

I never saw the ending as the girls settling for what was conventional or expected. They found partners they could be happy with and it was their choice to get married or be in a committed relationship. You can be a strong independent woman and still have a partner you love and share a life with.
THANK YOU, exactly! And they didn't even bother mentioning the fact that Miranda proposed to Steve over $3 pizza & beers! She proposed to him and refused to have any sort of religious aspect of her wedding and instead they got married in a park and not a church. They got married on their own terms and that in itself is a healthy thing.

Carrie was a woman-child living in a fantasy world. Unable to change.
I feel like they corrected a lot of that ending in the movies. Big and Carrie got into the same toxic cycle. Charlotte finally lived her dream narrative, but her kids were at some point too much for her. Miranda got cheated on, even though the series made them look like an absolute dream couple. And Samantha lost herself in her relationship. I think that partly made up for letting the series end on the conclusion that you‘ll get happy without doubts the second you get in a relationship.
You can be addicted to a person. I was addicted to my ex and it was a toxic hell hole. You do get a high when things go right. It’s an awful feeling and situation.

For the fertility myth bit. I had a friend who had ivf as she was 'infertile' after trying for 5 years. They had twins and were content with that. She then naturally got pregnant 2 more times and first used chemical contraception at 40 as 4 was more than enough 😂

It would've been good to see a "3 years later" scene similar to how Carrie ran into Aiden and his baby - in a full circle situation.
Imagine Carrie, stylish as ever, holding her baby waiting for her partner outside of a Dior Homme boutique haha. She then turns around and you see the sadness and disappointment in Big's eyes yet Carrie isn't phased.
Also, in real life Big-type men marry younger women. I felt like Big would've just found younger 25 year old versions of Carrie that wouldn't pressure him for commitment (not a beige Natasha). The older they get, the younger their women do.

I wonder why Samantha didn’t end up finding a polyamorous relationship. Perfect for her. I feel like emotional intimacy is something that strengthens her. Why did they try and squish her into monogamy all the time? Why does the show portray that is it so “impossible” to love yourself in a relationship anyway? In the wrong relationship maybe😑. Why does “loving yourself” also mean sleeping around? That in itself is twisted.

Yes, I was that 16 year old girl who watched the show on HBO when her mom was at work. I've grown up and now have a family of my own. The show is flawed and the characters are flawed - but that is what makes it good.
Although I found the analysis interesting, I still think all their endings make sense.

If it were written today, it would've been really satisfying to see Samantha in healthy polyamorous relationships where she can be free but still develop meaningful connections like she did with Smith and with James. It would also be cool to see Miranda and Steve as non-romantic co-parents and let her thrive in her career and her friendships.
Please do an analysis of gossip girl. So many themes to unpack. Glorified toxic relationships, wealth inequality, the dangerous of social media and so on. Would love your take!
I find it weird that the creator thinks the show was about how women don't need to be defined by men or by marriage. It's a nice sentiment, but the show focuses almost entirely on the men in their lives. It touched on other topics, but the show was ultimately about their dating lives, and it ended with all four being out of dating pool in one way or another. Definitely not realistic, but neither was Carrie's walk in closet, soooooooo

carrie and big deserved each other. charlotte struggling with and finally letting go of - that image of 'the perfect life' - made her easy to cheer for and fun to watch. say what you will about harry - he loved and accepted charlotte for who she was. miranda was consistently cynical and critical, with her friends in general - but even more so with charlotte and steve. that's not 'strong' - it's just being an asshole. samantha was so overly-drawn as a character, she eventually became a caricature. it's a testament to actress kim cattrall - that we continued to care about her at all by the end. cheers.

I tried dating for awhile before the pandemic. I could have had a boyfriend. I realized I wanted and needed to see single. Being single by choice and not assuming no one wants me makes all the difference. Adulthood is being ok with being alone.
One thing that needs to be said is that the reason why so many stories involving women center around marriage in literature is that their happiness DID depend on who they married. Was he financially stable and fiscally responsible? Did he respect her as a person and her body as something she had control over? The answers to these questions determine how she would live the rest of her life. If she did not marry, in all likelihood she would have to be supported by friends or family members and have to suffer social isolation if not ostracization. Many people actively villainized spinsterhood and widows faced criticism both for not marrying and for marrying too soon. It's not just a cliche about finding one's soulmate; it's the very real consideration of a huge decision, the only real decision many women could make, and how it would affect the rest of their lives.
That being said, I never watched Sex in the City, and having seen Emily in Paris, I don't really want to. Your conclusion about the show and Carrie's relationship with Mr. Big seems logical. Odd that you're using weightloss app as a promotion for this video.
I think there growth regardless of monogamy or not, like Miranda, I feel like it shows you can be a career woman and someone that can or want to have a family. I feel people forget having or wanting a family is fine, and that's what Miranda wanted. Or wanting to not have a family is fine too.
Carrie's whole life revolved around drama, the drama she used to share through her writing with the world, so it's quite obvious that she choose the toxic relationship over all else. Much of this can be seen in the CZcams community these days too

Can I just say the role of Native persons in the Twilight series was more offensive than fifties serials? They are mystic beings that are either able to see evil, read thoughts, see the future or attach themselves to toddlers and newborns as prospective wives. I swear if they went around yelling “HOW!” it would have been just as stereotypical!

I get that the show tries to promote independence to women, but I seriously see nothing wrong with ending up with someone. Also giving away your autonomy to care or take care other people applies to both men and women. It's called growing up. It's a good thing to stand on your feet, but it's also good to be able to rely on other people. You need both in life
(Although that doesn't apply to all relationships. Especially toxic ones)

It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't in every.single.story. If a female character says she isn't interested in relationships/having a family, then she'll 100% end up married and with children. Can't they just... represent the women who don't want that life just once?
@@ayal92 Yeah it gets tiresome. Sex and the City was one of the few shows that could have done this. Carrie would be better to end up single rather than Mr. Big. She is miserable and trapped in a toxic relationship. I guess this video proves that point.
It’s interesting that Carrie says to Big ”I’m only a particular fragment of the kind of person that you think you should be dating” when that’s EXACTLY how she views Big like “He’s a great man, I just need him to change this and this and this and then he’ll be PERFECT for me!”
Carrie and Big's ending, I tooked it as 2 toxic people that want to be together so bad, that in can't be any other way, thanks the universe they won't have children to fuck up.
Samantha's is disappointing, in the sense that WHY MONOGAMY?? You can have an open relationship, be poly, idk, there's so many options! Even in the 1st movie, seems like she feels neglected, other partner won't fix your already problematic relationship, but, she could have had sex with whomever and have fun while he was at work, like c'mon!
Welp, I know people with bad relationship streaks and they have told me that you don't learn unless a rock hits you and you stand up from said hit... But observing their love lives, how flawed those were and how strayed were the people they fell in love with, compared to what they wanted in the first place and how bad ended up.
I wonder. "Yeah, the advice was great, but when do you hit by that rock so many times that you got used to that happening and even 'loving it'..."

One of my favorite moments from the entire show is when Miranda scolds the others for talking about nothing but men. It's one of the show's truest to life moments. I rarely ever speak of boys to the other women in my life, close friends or not. We pretty much keep our private lives to ourselves. Our conversations are about everything under the sun-our careers, films, family, friends, the news-but not men. That stuff always takes last place.
Oh, and my only problem with analyses like this is the assumption that the endings to these characters' stories equal a permanent state. Not true. There's nothing wrong with Samantha finding a traditional relationship because when the relationship ends (nothing lasts forever) sexual adventure will always be there for her, whether in New York or the retirement home (seriously, those people are freaky.)
I think that the reason why so many women hate Carrie is because they are actually her. At least, I am. From the daddy issues to always being with toxic boyfriends and dumping the drama free ones that are actually good for us. The reason why I love SATC so much is because I can relate to every one of the four ladies, but mostly to Carrie. And I am glad that I found the show while being so young and also finding the analysis of Carrie from your channel because I'm more aware of my Carrie-like mistakes and what can I do to improve myself. Even though I still think I need the help from a therapist to overcome these flaws faster, the first step is admitting to yourself that your behavior isn't healthy and that's why I will always love this show. It really opened my eyes, because these are four beautiful characters with real flaws.

It gets me that they each HAD to find a "true love" in the last season, if not before. They "married down" in some sense: Steve was "just" a bar owner, Harry was bald, Jewish, and not at all socially-polished, and Samantha found a blonde boy-toy who was actually devoted to her. And then. . . there was Carrie. She ended up with this untouchable, elusive, dismissive man who NEVER took her feelings into account as he did whatever he wanted to (including moving around and marrying someone else). The movies were just wretched because of this too-conventional "fairy tale" ending. They never should have been made. By this time it should've been called Married Ladies in the City.
Otoh marrying Big meant Carrie could have every shoe she could desire plus a secure home. It's just a grand irony that their glamorous life comes with a side-order of TV in the bedroom, Dow-Jones intrusions and staying home to eat takeout
The show is the product of a stellar writer's room. The movies are just SatC's creator writing bad fanfiction about his own property.
@@mysteriiis there were a couple of things I liked about the first movie - Carrie looking genuinely like a 40-ish woman jilted at the altar SHOULD look, and her "depression" wardrobe which was really cool. Apart from that it was somewhat meh. The second movie is an abomination.
