She unabashedly dreams of getting married, having children, and living out a classic ideal of romantic love. This beacon of optimism acts as a stand-in for viewers who can identify with her conventional desire for a perfect-looking fairy tale. But if we look closer, much of the series is devoted to disproving the various “love myths” that Charlotte believes in. Here’s our Take on how, by showing how Charlotte is wrong about everything to do with love-but still right to believe in it -Sex and the City guides us to a deeper understanding of what romance is really all about.

    Girls like that are super optimistic, kind and care about their friends. We shouldn't blame them for wanting good-looking wealthy guy. They are pretty and good-looking by themselves, I think they have all rights to ask for it. I see myself only with a partner that as smart as I am. And I have never been shamed for it. People just think it's logical, that a smart girl prefers to date smart people. But why whenever pretty girls wanting to be with a pretty guy - everybody is so not here for it?

      Absolutely ! I have always attracted guys who preferred me without any makeup and nice clothes on. Well, that's because I was always attracted myself to laid back guys who didn't care much about appearence and mundanity and preferred experiences over possessions. It may sound strange, but I've never been with a rich man and I wouldn't like to, because with money usually comes certain social obligations or values that I am utterly allergic to. I'm very happy living a simple life instead.

      I think you missed the point of the video. They weren't saying that Charlotte was wrong to have preferences. Just that she was so focused on the perfect idea of what a partner and marriage should be, she lost sight of actually finding a real connection with someone. She eventually let go of that rigid way of thinking and a met a loving partner that she really connected with. There is no shame in having ideals. But also know that life rarely works out the way you first envision. If you are too strict with your rules, you might miss out on some really great people.

      Very entitled indeed. As time goes on and I re-watch SATC, I start to appreciate Charlotte more and more. And Carrie just works on my nerves. She is inconsistent. Wants a fantasy whirlwind romantic New York life,which in my opinion is unattainable and slightly a bit naive. She wants certain things but at the same time when she gets it, she is confused and frustrated that it didn't come with the pretty bow she expected it to come in. She lives in her brain more than in reality.

      I don't think that is the point of that episode,I mean, it's Carrie's fault becuase I think she can sell their shoes or sale clothing, but the part of Charlotte she could offer the money and she didn't do it, friends are for support other friends. Miranda and Samantha didn't doubt about it.

    • @terzelrasmus-williams2530
      @terzelrasmus-williams2530 Před 3 lety +64

      @GA I hear what you say and agree with you to a certain extent. In my opinion I feel that it wasn't fair to "money-shame" Charlotte when she didn't offer when Sam and Miranda offered money and then felt brazen enough to confront Charlotte about it and make her feel like a bad friend. Money is a sensitive topic for some people and I think Carrie should just have respected the fact that Charlotte didn't want to talk about it or even offer her money. Okay yes in the end Charlotte did give her her wedding ring from her first marriage to pawn off and make a down payment on her apartment. And it was an important lesson for Carrie. But Carrie basically bullied and "money-shamed" Charlotte for not offering money and for being rich. Money is not something one talks about lightly. A true friend would do what Charlotte - she schooled Carrie and Carrie realised that it's not fair for others to give her an easy way out. She even realised that she must handle her money better, which essentially led her to writing for Vogue and then getting her work published etc giving her more financial independence. It was an important episode in that light. Both friends essentially learnt from one another, but I do feel Carrie didn't have any tact on the matter.

In real life, you do not want to spend years having countless sexual partners who won't give you any pleasure. While she was very conventional and that rubbed me wrong at times, I did like Charlotte's ability to believe in love and to always believe in it. In the first movie, its tested in a very profound way when Big and Carrie marry. When Big leaves her at the altar, it is Charlotte who yells at him that "NO!" assertively because to Charlotte, this was Carrie's moment of love fulfilled and dashed. It's the brave love towards her friend that makes her feel bad that her infertility struggle is over and she is pregnant naturally when Carrie is still struggling after. When she's nine months and she bumps into Big accidentally at a restaurant and tells him off, that's so huge for her to do since she never really did it before because of the myths she believed during the show that her water breaks. Charlotte is stronger and even in the second movie, as she struggles with the reality of motherhood to the point where Carrie is just cold to her even after the events of the first movie, she can admit further that its okay to not be okay sometimes. Charlotte will always believe in love. That's hopeful.

She should have been the character I related to the most (I'm a romantic, longing for having a conventional family of my own), but whenever she opened her mouth, she would say the most ridiculous phrases. Her fixation on the marriage at all costs (the proposal to Trey!), her classism, her being constantly judgemental and shocked by Samantha (it's like every second episode she had to be reminded that yes, Sam likes to talk openly about her sex life and mostly one-night stands), while showing hypocrisy... all these things made me think she was a caricature of a certain type of a person more than a real character, and that is a pity.

However, that desire to show off a "perfect life" extends beyond romance for many people. Just think of the social media "influencers" who always try to make it seem like their life is perfect and/or unique. Think how many people are in debt up to their eyeballs to maintain that illusion of "the good life". Having a goal of marriage and family is not a bad thing, so long as you approach it realistically and do not make that all you are as a person.

I also find it very sad that Carrie and Charlotte are so hated on these days. They both had more idealistic views on love but at the end they found their own happiness, no matter what someone else may think about it. I'm happy for Samantha for "fucking like a man" if that is how she found her empowerment, but I could never relate or live such a life. Simply because that doesn't make me happy, and that's ok. It's okay to want family and husband and maybe more "traditional" lifestyle. On the other hand there is pragmatic Miranda, realistic, down to earth but sometimes too realistic to let go and be with a man she loves. She also overcomes that and finds her happiness. Point is none of them are perfect, but they are all women, just because you relate more to one doesn't make others worse.

    Charlotte got married with a man who cherishes her, had a happy marriage with him and had a loving family. So no she was NOT WRONG. She got everything she wanted and lived happily ever after.
    Nothing wrong with wanting the fairy tale. That’s what made her happy.
    And in despite of how her friends viewed relationships and how they dated men, she was always herself and stuck true to her femininity and traditional views. In my opinion she was the ONLY WOKE ONE of the group.

      Charlotte chose the life many women chose a generation or two earlier. For some of those women things worked out; but many later regretted their choices, or at least after 20 years decided they wanted more. (I see Charlotte as Betty Draper in the 1960s.)
      If any character was going to have a 1970s-style “midlife crisis” in the reboot, Charlotte would have been the most likely candidate.
