A canal trip on the Oxford, Coventry and Ashby Canals

Locks are something which sometimes take a while to grasp, particularly if you get staircases. I have just found it is a matter of taking your time and being careful. On one occasion on a previous trip a rope got caught on one of the bollards and that caused a bit of consternation as the boat began to tip!
Turning is a matter of practice and I think everyone of us has managed to get it wrong and either hit something (explains why the glasses on a hire boat often don't match!) or had to go into reverse hurriedly looking embarrassed! The most common mistake I have seen is that people realise they are getting it wrong, panic, cut the power and then wonder why it stops steering!
