When I was twenty I learned from the records of Josh White. He fascinated me but he was already dead, he died with 54. For me he was a old man. Now I'm 66 and learn from a much younger Josh. But musical authority obviously not depends from age, I'm right now busy writing out what you play. It's not easy but it worth! The descending base run over the B7 is just wonderful. Have a good day! Tom
Another one of my favorite songs as a kid. And now I love it even more. You are just astounding. I love that you are introducing these classics to a whole new generation. Thanks as always.
Wow Josh! YOU ARE MUSIC. It ooozes from you. You are ONE with the guitar & the song you're singing. What a Talent! Thank you for sharing your gift with all of us~ We are Blessed~
Love how he "bells" out of there! Wow, Josh! To say you've got musical sense is a vast understatement. Loved the performance, and I hope to see much more of what you do!
Barely 15 years after this song was first performed (Porgy and Bess), my mom and dad were singing this in the car (with perfect harmony) on vacation trips across the USA with me in the back seat as a toddler, taking it all in. Then, my high school music teacher reintroduced this (along with Gershwin's other works) to me and my fellow music appreciation students. I've been revisiting this song for over 65 years, and you nailed every half and quarter tone, nuance, and chord. You never disappoint. Signed, Old New Fan.
I just discovered you on you tube, Josh. Glad I did. Not only do you play and sing well, your choice of music is refreshing. It seems not many of your generation are attracted to the music of my generation. You make us proud! Thank you, and keep rocking.
So great to run into a really old video of young Josh. Already displaying the skill, style and graceful easy confidence that has aged just like fine wine.
When I as thinking it couldn't get better comes the solo... AMAZING guitar work!! Keeping the bass groove while playing the melody at the same time...oh come on!!
See my comment over on your sultans of swing cover. This is what I'm talking about. Laid back and into it. The audience can tell that the music is moving you, you're into it. Really really good playing on this one.
Been following Josh for awhile now... I'm always amazed at his left-hand dexterity. My hand won't let me position some of the chords that he uses, let alone to form almost instantly.
Have been watching your vids for over a year now. I picked up the guitar around the same time. I'm 55 years old and get inspired every time I watch. Keep them coming.
Awesome! and this guy is feeling it too!!!! lol - love it! - what a great cover of this classic! - great picking and a good voice - very nicely done - keep on keeping on brother- you've got the music in yea - cheers from Canada !!!
The real lesson is to not ask for lessons like this. Josh is a professional, and the way he got to be one was by banging this stuff out in his bedroom like you see in this decade-old clip. If you're unable to recognize the chords he's playing (or heck, Google them), well...that's not a good start. There's no way he can teach you how to expose your soul with vocalization or flourishes on the fretboard. That you have to figure out yourself, my man. What do you suppose musicians did before CZcams tutorials existed? I'll tell you what they did: they watched, they listened, and they practiced until they got close to being able to replicate it solo. And then they practiced. And then practiced some more.
He's also trained by professionals in school. Not some CZcams guy that starts with "hey guys!" If you want to play like this, go to music college. No tutorial exists...
@@lordmonty9421 The way most of us have learned is through the generosity of the musicians around us. Of course not without our efforts, but let a man request a lesson. Don't think he deserves your high-horse snark.
@@bcolebuild I re-read my comment and then re-watched the clip, just to see if my opinion had changed. It hasn't. Honestly, this song is a standard. The chords he's using are not only plain to see and would be easily identifiable to anyone a lesson would do any good to, but as I said 4 months ago, even if he can't identify them, he can search them out. All the runs he does throughout? Those come later. I wasn't giving "high-horse snark," I was telling the guy something he needed to hear. He should practice his strumming, practice the chord changes, and he'll get there by himself. "Can you write the tabs for this?" and "Can you please do a lesson for this?" are some of the biggest tropes of guitar content online, and you know this. Alex up there just needs to put his nose to the grindstone, there are no shortcuts.
been watching your videos for several weeks now, try to grab a couple each night - glad you have so many posts. You are an incredible talent! Funny how a few wannabes dislike your videos. Jealousy & immaturity are a bad combination. Keep up the great work and please keep posting!
Make sure you check out his cover of "All of me" (feat. Gonzolo Bergara and the legendary Clipper Anderson) I'm not a big jazz person, but it's really good!
Oh my ! How brilliant was this !!! How did you learn to play this good ? I am really hoping to improve my guitar (very modest) skills and any advice or recommendations (Books, videos, ...) would be more than welcome. :) Anyways great job, hope to see more from you !
I was like “You know I just started playing but not too bad.” And the guy on the last video showed you how to play this with just strumming. Mine sounded weird so I clicked this one. Kill me now, this is so good I swear
Redo it. Redo this song 9 years later 💜

So interested too!!!
I agree absolutely. I’m trying to just get the chords down so I can put it on a loop. Any insight would be appreciated..
Once again I find another Josh Turner gem I've never seen before. This is absolutely the best version I've seen for solo performer.

This cover will never get old. Been replaying it countless times already.
