In 1980, this guy gave me a green room lesson. I will never, ever play like him, but he defined the way I developed. I once play a solo gig for bunch of stomach doctors. The room cleared, but for two guys and I had an hour left to play. After playing a couple of tunes, one of them told me I sounded a lot like Joe. Dumbfounded, I asked how would he know that. Apparently he was from NYC and would go and see Joe every time he was in town. He was a quiet giant and I have used his lessons dutifully for the past 44 years. Thank you Joe.
Rick Beato brought me here. Sometimes you wonder what else am I missing in this life. Not to have heard something like this would be such an awful shame.
I’m 43, and I first heard Joe Pass in 2003. I randomly bought Chops, his duo album w Neils Osted Pedersen, in a used record store. As a wannabe lead guitarist, it changed my life forever.
@@patrickmullins4552 You have found your bliss, Patrick. So glad you've gotten to share it. You would love Leland Sklar's channel. Been doing daily posts for more than two years!

I got two others as good or better than joe the great Lenny breau & of course the man Wes Montgomery of course all theee are my favorite on any given day I listen to all three with amazement all genius master players all gone way too soon
For me it's Virtuoso #1, but all Joe's albums are jazz guitar gold. Virtuoso #3 is slightly unusual for Joe but it's worth studying especially as it is fully transcribed.
I just started with Jazz after years and years of metal. Holy cow, that stuff is something else and this guy takes it to a whole new level. I‘m simultaneously amazed and envious as hell…
@@euronymous6450 that‘s what I did with metal. Became pretty good over the years. But this is still another level. Of course, practise will be the only way to get there but it‘s still way more complicated than anything I‘ve ever done before.
Mr. Pass was such a phenomenally gifted and sensitive player. All I can do is shake my head and enjoy what he made seem so easy - but which is NOT easy by any means.
Wes is argbly the best soloist of all time on amy instrument(in terms of improv), or that we heard of, even many greats agree with the statement. I think its very obvious if you learn one of his solos. But as far as pure performance alone and underdtanding of the instrument, joe pass is clearly at the top.
I picked up a guitar because of Metallica but I learned some theory from a Joe Pess book a neihbor lent to me. This is stunning performance only Joe could do this.
The First lick Is wonderfully stolen from Liszt's Hungarian Rapsody n°2 . Who knows knows. Ironically this version of Summertime is also kind of a Rapsody. The theme is exposed in different ways one after the other both a tempo and with a lot of rubato, with contrapunctal elements and lots of other stuffs.
@@mathewdavies6472 im learning jazz right now slowly slowly. stuffing my ears with heaps of Joe Pass goodies. far out this guy. at first i thought he is just playing random sht on the fretboard as he pleases. but then his playing and melodies makes complete musical sense.

Even the tone he had dialed in is flawless.
A real miracle to play like that. And improvising, because he played each piece always different!
*…. because he always played each piece differently.
Wow: what incredible tone, speed, and intelligence in his playing.

What a gift this man had. Incredible.

Just saw a list of the 75 greatest guitar players OF ALL TIME. No only was Joe not #1, HE DIDN'T EVEN MAKE THE LIST! ARE F'N KIDDING ME?
Any lists on guitarist or any other instrument is very subjective and usually garbage...
Joe was a jazz guitar genius. None other like him...

always loved this song; believe JP lays down one of the best versions here. a masterclass
true "Virtuoso", my favorite guitar player any genre. literally "wrote the book" on jazz guitar
