Ranking All Ninji Speedrun Levels In Super Mario Maker 2!

- There are a lot of level types seen in Super Mario Maker 2, however one of the ones seen most often are speedrun levels. Due to this, Nintendo themselves decided to create their own series of speedrun levels known as Ninji Speedruns. These were competitions where player's would compete against others for the world record on a ninji level. Nintendo created a total of 20 for super Mario maker 2 so today I will be ranking them all, from rolling snowballs to even the special ones like 35th anniversary Auto Mario, from worst to best! I'm basing my ranking on if the level is fun to play and how generally unique and creative it was! Big shout out to Squiderman for making guides for most of the ninji speedrun levels as it would have been very hard to compete without them!

To all you dorks who didn't make it to the end, I used a brand new editing software for this video, premiere. It should let me do better edits in the future so I used this video to help me learn it. If the edits are on the sloppy side this time that’s why, or maybe you all think it’s better than normal! Either way, enjoy the video!
Edit: Also a few people have informed me that I was incorrect about a few strats and records. My ranking does remain the same since this is coming from my own experience, but I do feel it’s important that the record holders get recognized! In addition the player Gijs also known as FK_Jape6 also beat this record only about 6 months after the ninji ended, and he even improved after that. Pause buffering can assist some players in this ninji, but BigBirdo's record being obtained with pause buffering came down to his skill.
Also, you can home button pause buffer but that's even more boring because you'd have to record your gameplay and then rewatch it to see where you where so you know what to press.
Pause buffering shouldn’t be allowed because of increased concistency and tas
@@ruben._._34577 Gijs and Gible both find it harder with pause buffers and they've both beaten the record that was done with pause buffers by getting their own record.

Edit: I just realized that’s like the only thing the people in the comments are saying, so I just wanted to take the time and say, this dude is a awesome CZcamsr, the amount of effort put into his videos is crazy, I would definitely not have the patience for that! One of many reasons this dudes one of my top 5 favorite CZcamsrs.

I agree with #1, it was the first Ninji I grinded, also the one I did the best in. That was the only reason why I kept grinding for the other Ninjis.

Yeah headgear hustle was the only one (maybe besides speedventure of link) that I grinded more than the 35th anniversary, and it’s definitely my favorite by far
Yoshi's piranha picnic is the only ninja Speedrun I played, and boy did I love it. I managed to get top 10% even though I am just a 13 year old. Even though it was slower, I always took the secret red yoshi over the pokey at the start

I think that the frog suit on the grounnd is the worst power up in the game, but with an item on water or when you're under water it's the best 1 (unless it's even without the water bad i do like water levels tbh, even the dark ones)

IMO headgear shouldn’t be #1 and the Smw desert level should be higher.
3:44 (CBB Pow Strat) No you don't have to wait for the pow to fall, there is another strat that I had found that you would know about if you watched the world record instead of simply the guide that Squiderman (Shromeone) made. The next sentence you say "people watch speed runs to see speed" seem to not apply to you :/
5:05 (DBS boo ring jump) No it's not a one frame jump. And it's not because it's hard and that you are bad at it (no harsh everyone is allowed to have fun speedrunning) that it's necessarily "frame perfect".
5:17 (DBS run through boo ring) Again, no it's not "incredibly inconsistent", it's always the same thing, it's just hard.
14:26 (BR record) I'm not sure when you started this video, but oh boy this is so wrong... if you had just searched for balloon race world record on youtube you would've seen that it is not world record anymore. If you want to talk about the record instead of your personal opinion that's fine but in that case you have to make sure to be at least accurate. This, is an insult to the peoples who grinded for the record just like they never existed and I can't let that slide.
17:02 (BCTLD overworld/subworlds strats) "The two main routes aren't too far apart in terms of speed". So maybe it was unclear at the very very beginning when the ninji released which strat was going to end up faster, however the mainworld has shown up to be 4 (possible 5) seconds faster than the yoshi strat. So depending on how good you are at the game I guess it could be just as fast for you, however this is just straight up wrong if you don't make that clear.
In this whole video you call some things annoying because they are hard and that you can't do them. It just feels like you liked the ninjis that you grinded the most and that therefor you placed them on top. For example in 2nd placed you ranked AAM which ACTUALLY contains a frame perfect trick even though some lower in the rankings were concidered bad for being too difficult to perform. Plus you are not talking about the swinging claws which you seemed to extremely dislike since you placed SCF at the last place but for some reason just because you grinded this particular level more it was not a problem...
And just in general you could've avoided a lot of misinformations by being more up to date with the records (leaderboard: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xOMJcEq_fVPQ4VXHfuStVNWAC4tw6d5w6i7VDEcPgn4/edit?usp=sharing ) . Apart from the ones I quoted just above, you say that SCF don't have any alternative route which is not true since a new star route was discovered (by myself) that allowed the top level speedrunners to grind for a new world record. Or for CMM, you talk about the sub area being annoying and you show gameplay of a very old strat that was not even near close what a concidered fast strat today would be, today yet again the world record has been improved with a star strat (again found but not performed by myself). It would have been fine if you specified that it was the route that YOU were using, but not quite when it sounds like it's the only/fastest way to complete the level. I also found it funny that you said that YPPP flows perfectly while throwing the dry bones knowing that you can go too fast and despawn them before they hit the piranha plants. For TSoL, again you show gameplay of a very old slow strat that involves going up while the route used in world record pulls out a bomb in the water and goes through the piranha plants, so no, going up there is not a "shortcut", it does the exact opposite, again you're talking about it like this is the only route when this is the route that YOU use.
Also as you said maybe the rankings could have been more accurate if you had grinded more. For myself I know I probably would've had a burn out too if I was not in the Ninji community discord (linked in the spreadsheet leaderboard), which would have probably helped you avoiding a lot of those misinformations at the same time.
Overall I still liked the video talking about Ninji Speedruns with your opinions and transitions over the misinformations but I just didn't enjoy the fact that you were talking like what you were saying were facts when they were just your opinions. This video can have my like though.
Thank you for the well written response, it’s not often I receive criticism that isn’t just blind rage so I appreciate that. I admit my research likely could have been better but let me better explain where this is coming from. This ranking was meant to come from my own personal perspective, as every ranking video on CZcams should. I’m a relatively mid level player despite putting a lot of time in the game so when I grinded these down I always used Squiderman’s guides. A lot of what I said has also come from what I had remembered grinding these myself, so if something is outdated like the last dash, that’d be why. As for the other things individually
A lot of the miss information came from a hard miss interpretation on my part. When I saw something along the lines of “Rank #1” in a title I assumed that meant the world record, not the time by the end of the competition period. At least that’s what I’m pretty sure that means now. I watched Kingboo97’s “Rank #1” time on CBB where it had the waiting for the POW strategy that I said I wasn’t a fan of. Due to me assuming this was the world record, along with Squiderman’s guide having the same strategy I believed that was the fastest way to do this section. So yes I do watch a lot of speedruns, I just apparently don’t know where to look for the updated ones.
I said the jump in DBS was frame perfect because Squiderman said in his guide for the level that you needed to do a one frame jump. I don’t know if they were exaggerating in their guide but I had just believed what they said, or I could’ve misinterpreted it again. Trust me, I get annoyed when other youtubers say something is frame perfect when it clearly isn’t. Also I don’t appreciate being called bad I’m decent >:((((((((((
The incredibly inconsistent part was bad wording on my part, I meant it as incredibly difficult, not necessarily changing or different. I use the term in other games like smash where it’s more accepted to talk about difficult stuff, but I will try to remove it from my vocabulary for Mario Maker
Once again I apologize for miss interpreting what “Rank #1” meant in the title for in this case BigBirdo’s level. In my defense though, I can’t find the actual record that you are referring to with CZcams’s search. To me all that pops up are times slower than BigBirdo’s, the actual records seem to be generally more obscure than just an easy CZcams search as you implied. Again, I apologize for getting that wrong but saying it was as easy as a CZcams search away is also disingenuous.
Bowser castle level, yeah I was just speaking from memory of when the event went live as it was much more debated then.
As for me placing the ones I grinded the most at the top, well that would just make sense. I mean I only grinded down the ones I liked so, I feel like it makes sense to rank them up higher. SMB2 Mario was the only exception, since I was burnt out of the game by the time it was released. As I said in the video, I placed Auto Mario higher than DBS because it’s backup is easier and doesn’t lose too much time. Again, I think it’s important that this is not coming from a world record contender and I was ranking them on how fun they were and how fun their alternate routes were. A good speedrun level shouldn’t just be about its main path, it should have many options for more and less experienced players, which I emphasized in the intro. I believed Auto Mario had a better alternate route, along with the rest of the level being generally more fun. One more time, the world record strat is not the only thing taken into account here, the alternate paths are important as well. Also for the claws, SCF was based entirely around them, while they were barely in Auto Mario, so obviously they would be less of a problem.
For the rest of what you said, these were all just my opinions and that goes for every single ranking on CZcams. I’m attempting to make my scripts less wordy, so I thought the generic “this is just my opinion” line would be fine to cut, but I suppose it isn’t obvious to all viewers. This ranking is purely from my perspective. Thank you once again for leaving a mostly respectful comment, I hope this reply clears up a few things about where a lot of my personal confusion came from. I’ll also update the pinned comment with the link to the leaderboard that you posted, for anyone interested. Sorry if anything in here doesn’t make sense, it is 2 in the morning at the time of me writing this lol
Thanks to you for explaining where the errors came from! I can totally relate about the misleading Rank 1 title as at the beginning I was also doing this mistake. Surprinsingly I also got burnt out for the SMB2 level even though I liked it after playing it again, maybe it's because the different timings for the snowball at the very beginning gives it a bad impression Idk. Just know that I'm not calling you bad, just bad at the specific trick that you were talking about, I've played mario maker a lot now (maybe not as much as the best players) and I would call myself pretty good, however that doesn't change that I'm just garbage at some things (including in the ninjis) because this game has so much variety.
And yeah, it's good to remind throughout the video that this is only your opinion as some people may disagree with it and may have forgot that you said it was only your opinion (that was the case for me).
As for the balloon race world record it's weird that it doesn't pops up for you, I hadn't checked before just now but the ninji discord said it was and for me I only need to scroll just a little bit to find it, but I could understand that you stopped as soon as you saw "Rank 1".
As I said it didn't prevent me too much to enjoy the video, I also did it for the speedrunners in the ninji discord that felt a little annoyed that the informations were not right even though they grinded a lot to try to get the fastest times (just like if you would see some other person saying they are the first person doing a ninji ranking video even though you have put a lot of work into this video).
