    Had the pleasure of meeting him a couple years ago at a book signing for the first Poet Anderson novel. He was incredibly nice to every person and chatted with everyone for about a minute each (even though the line literally went down all 5 flights of stairs and out the front doors). A woman behind me had him sign her arm so she could get it tattooed; she had self harm scars, and Tom noticed and said something along the lines of “If you ever feel like doing this again, remember me and remember that I love you.” Kind of corny, but it was sweet and speaks to the type of guy Tom is.

      I grew out of Blink, but listen to their earlier albums time to time. They were a big influence when I had my own pop/punk band in highschool. The way he explained earlier in the the video about how we can do this bnand thing too thats exactly how we felt when we listened to blink. We used the Rock Show to open our set did 3-4 of our own songs nad closed with stay together for the kids when we use to play shows. good times.

      @Tess1061 Před 7 lety +33

      I sobbed my way through the later parts of the Documentary when he started touching on BCR and transitioning into Self Titled, then into AVA. It breaks my heart. All Tom wanted to do was expand /himself/ in order to bring more to the table for Blink -- and it just kinda blew up on him, instead.
      Then his explanation about WDNTW, The Adventure. The reason I always loved AVA over +44 when they were first taking off, was because Mark chose to express his grief in a nasty / negative way -- whereas Tom took his pain and tried to show the world that there's still beauty and hope for a better future, no matter how bad things get at times.
      And going throughout highschool (I was in 9th grade when WDNTW released), and I-Empire released by 11th grade -- AVA always took me by the hand and set me back on my feet, with eyes shining bright for the future whenever I was down or experiencing hardships. AVA was what lifted me up and pieced me back together again.
      Tom truly is an inspiration -- and that inspiration is reflected so beautifully in all of his works.

      Agreed. I'm 27 and watching Blink transition through so many stages, from BCR, to the Self-Titled era to the split, then the whole +44/AVA hiatus, all the way to the reunion and the second split, I feel like this documentary fills in all the missing gaps and finally answers so many questions of what happened during that time. Up until now, all we really heard was Mark and Travis' side of the story so I think it's great that Tom was finally given the chance to explain himself in such a dignified and professional manner.

I wish I said hi and shared how much he has impacted my life but i told myself for years never to be the star struck kid with people. Great take, he’s not a technical musician with as many notes and phrases or concepts you could do. He keeps it simple and that simplicity does give great material. Many musicians that are heavy into the complexities may disdain the artist who are simplistic but Tom makes the simplicity into a song writing structure that the most technical player might totally skip over. He’s no EVH or Dimebag or Hendrix but he made his own sound and it’s beyond the guitar and that melody is something to be appreciated, and any musician aspiring to be great doesn’t want to be like X guy, they want to be their own and indeed he has

    Dump weed was such an important song. Blink has started coming into the spotlight with Dude Ranch, but then they lost Scott and there was some uncertainty as to whether they would be able to build on the momentum of “Dammit” and “Josie” or if they would become just another punk band with a catchy song who fades into the ether. When Enema was finally released, Blink were newly minted adults and nobody knew what they might sound like with such a personal and professional transition. “Dump weed” was the opening track on Enema, and it blew the doors off the listener with the frenetic pace and the “holy hell” catchiness of the music and lyrics. It proved that not only was Blink here to stay, they were to ascend to even higher status over the next few albums. Such a great song.

      The main riff from dumpweed is so sick but the song really slams because of Travis. The drumming elevated all the songs onto a whole other stratosphere. Travis is just as equal to Mark and Tom. All three together made the catchiest shit ever.

      I've been listening since the very beginning. I have to agree. That punch that Travis brought is something that cannot be denied. He transformed the band beyond belief. I've seen Travis play live with 4 other bands, a total of 10 times now. Travis is the purest definition of a drummer, to me. Best live drummer i've ever seen. The energy and style that he brought to my favorite band(blink) is unbelievable. I'm so glad he's never been afraid to branch off and keep sharing his amazing talents with other bands as a fill in drummer.

He couldve cashed out making a super easy paycheck and instead went and dumped a bunch of money into several side projects that werent super profitable. He did it just because he wanted to grow artistically. Thats pretty honorable dude right there.

    I had a best friend in high school and his name was Simon.
    We always listened to Blink 182 and played music toghether. It was Blink who brought us together. Two tattoed misfits who loved punk rock, skateboarding and had this "fuck off" attitude.
    Simon loved everything about Tom and so did I.
    We even got these matching piercings just like the one Tom had.
    Simon were fighting against his monster inside of his head every single day for many years.
    When he was 19 years old he hang himself in his garage.
    One week earlier he walked over to me in school and sad "thanks for being my friend. Thank for everything. See you later".
    It broked my heart that he was gone but at the same it made me realise that I had to continue to fight my own deamons. I just had to.

    I don't think many blink fans realize just how complex a person Tom really is. They're always going on about how he "left us" and ditched blink to go do his own thing, and I can relate, I thought the same way when I first heard they broke up. But when you take the time to try and find out why he left, why he's doing his own thing, it suddenly starts to make sense. I'm not putting blame on one person in particular, but Mark getting jealous at the whole BCR thing really put the band in an awkward spot. I remember watching them play live in Japan and Tom was having fun making jokes with the crowd like he always did. I don't know why but Mark snapped at him to quit it, something completely out of character, and Tom didn't know how to react. I'll never forget the look on Tom's face, he was stunned. And I realized at that moment just how serious this situation was. I think people who hate on Tom need to open their mind and see the reasons behind his leave from the band. In regards to people not liking California, I can understand. I'm not a big fan of the album. San Deigo is pretty good, but other than that it doesn't have much substance. I think Mark and Travis tried to emulate a sound from EOTS or TOYPAJ, and I can see why. But the problem is that it didn't succeed in doing so partly because of Tom's absence, partly because Mark didn't allow Matt to have much input in the album, Matt is clearly a more talented musician that the album shows, and partly due to their new producer. +44 shows the type of music that Mark and Travis can write, but I don't think it came through enough in California as I think it should have. In order for blink to progress forward as a band, they need to stop looking in the past trying to emulate their old sound and create a new sound, maybe not as progressive as AVA, but definitely not like their old music, because it isn't going to be the same without Tom. I think they need to push and make a new sound that they can call their own, similar to how Tom did with BCR, and hopefully their new album they're working on can do that, although I have my doubts. If you've taken the time to read this I thank you, I just needed to vent some frustration. Hopefully, people will realize that Tom isn't going to come back to blink, Matt is a great artist, but he's not going to bring blink to the same heights they used to be at, Neighbourhoods and California are good albums in their own respective ways, and blink need to do something different with their sound due to Matt and Mark having similar voices. Maybe less nana's and woah's and more duet type performances like Pathetic.

    • @Hey-Its-Dingo
      @Hey-Its-Dingo Před 5 lety +10

      California's Deluxe edition bonus CD really should have been released as Blink's second album with Matt instead of just a bonus disk, it is SO much better than California on its own. It felt like they were a more cohesive unit, and it was a lot more experimental. (Nowhere near as high as AvA or +44, but a step in the right direction.)

Unfortunately, i was locked up at 14 and released at 17 and at that point i had become a fan of mainstream rap and stayed that way for a while. I spent the last 5 years in an adult prison, was released in april and now I'm watching all of these documentaries with tom and intricate films that he has created. And I feel just as in love as I did at 13. I'm so glad I still got to see the original blink play in 2014 in Belgium. Sure it was that period where tom wasn't 100% with his singing and guitar playing but still it was awesome. When I look back at the concerts form 2000 and listin to the mark tom and travis show I wish I was there that time. It's so awesome and it just makes me sad that that time will never come back. And then I get nostalic about my childhood and youth. Inside i'm still that teenager in love with the punk rock and the sex jokes. though i'm gonna be 27 in a month. It's hard to pick a favorite band but there's just one band where I almost literalyy know all their songs and it's blink. I owe these guys a part of my life and my intrest is rock music, guitar playing etc. Had to share my story guys :) I'm only 7 minutes in the documentary but shit the feels..

      NineEleven1 I hear you bro, I was born in the 80’s and saw blink 182 live back in the year 2000 In a small venue with like 800 people... soo craazy, Travis was Blonde and had like only 50 tattoos :P...
      Started the show with dumpweed and I got the chance to High five the dudes from First row (tom and mark) because they were just so punk rock back then... This was some months prior to their big 2000 vma ending show with all the small things which kicked off their career in My opinion :)
      Have a good one!

    The more I learn about Tom, the more I like this guy. He has many layers, and does not rely on his time as a rocker with Blink as a social crutch. I have to give him respect for not getting trapped in the hollow bull$#it that comes with fame. He is liberated! This is what true success looks like.

    Was still a dumb teenager when blink first broke up, like many i immediately jumped on the hate Tom bandwagon. Almost 30 years old, and i can 100% understand as to why Tom wanted to leave. Blink was awesome back in the day when they were young, the simplistic sounds and funny lyrics fit into the narrative of young people. When you get older and you are still singing fart joke songs...that's kind of lame, after watching this you can see how much further Tom wanted / wants to take his musical abilities that Blink was holding him back from doing.
