For me Tom's tone is in the chugging sound when palm muting
this ^
For sure. It sticks out on enema and take off super strong
Yes!! That sound during the palm mutes!!
That's one of the key qualities of his tone.
I would love to know how he got that sound.
I love how the palm muted verses in Dumpweed sound
For me, his tone on Stay Together for the Kids is absolutely massive.
O agree man, and both clean and distorted lines
Definitely! That, and ‘I Feel So’
Underrated for sure
TOYPAJ had all of his best tones, in my opinion
@@blondoband They were heavily processed though. Machine Gun Kelly has picked up where he left off in that regard. Listen to Title Track and Love Race. The booming bass is this exact tone you're referring to (and no surprise that Travis Barker is producing most of his tracks).
It's important to note that the late great Jerry Finn had a huge part to play in getting Tom's tone on the album. Guitar tones were his specialty.
They used Fender Bassmans with guitars on the album too!
RIP to the legend.
RIP Jerry Finn
@@Dawn0fTheShred My friend has one of Jerry's amps used on the album. I got to play Adam's song on the amp it was recorded on!
@@AAWSAPRocky does he have a channel? Would love to see some stuff played on it
I feel like Dumpweed is closer to his signature sound. It has everything on that song
I totally agree, that first note is massive!
Yes sir
@@shaunoleary8740Live and die by the greatest note: E
It really is. Best album opener in pop punk.
Is funny you chose All The Small Things. When I think of that album and his guitar tone Anthem is the song that comes to mind. I used that song when I tried to recreate his tone. Man what an album.
Mine is definitely dumpweed. That opening is sooo amazing.
I always think of Dysentery Gary. Every song is awesome on that album though.
All the small things is the songs that comes to my mind
Dysentery Gary & Wendy Clear really stand out for me
mine is wendy clear
Tom was a huge influence on me picking up the guitar. hes honestly a great player i dont care what people say. he plays and sings so fun good shit
Is it just me or is this tone way off? Its too spongey and aggressive for Toms tone during this era. I think this may be due to some of the post-processing used here. The studio and live tones were waaaayy more clean and had a more smooth feel to them then I think a lot of people understand. That being said, I think the gear you have could get you really close if you just tweaked them a bit more. Good video overall, not trying to hate.
Yeah I think it's off a bit too. I'm not really feeling this
I agree, it’s not there at all for me. The Orange doesn’t help.
Sound likes matt skiba tones
The record was recorded on tape. Analog tape gives you alot of harmonics that you can't get with digital.
I agree toms tone was really bright and had a lot of clarity and sounded really light compared to this guys interpretation its too metal and rugged sounding for his tone also too processed Sounding
Honestly it sounds more accurate without the plugins. This sounds like a metal version of Toms tone.
You're right it sounds like a metal version this video sucks
For me the tone on “Rock show” is the perfect example of his signature tone
Yeeeessss I’ve been waiting for this one. Could you recreate The Deftones guitar tone on the album - Around The Fur. I love that tone.
Every Deftones album can be a showcase for amazing guitar tone.
@@pallbearer1175 I never really liked the guitar tone on White Pony, something about it just rubs me the wrong way. Still a phenomenal album Though.
I think that album was an ADA MP1/JMP1 and a marshall power amp if I am not mistaken. Def be cool to hear it done though!!
Please Fluff, yes!
Yes.
Enema of the State Tom Delonge IS the reason why I picked up and learned the guitar in high school. HUUUUGE inspiration. The palm mutes, the seymour duncan humbucker pickup, the 3 chord melodies....the list goes on.
As credited on the "Enema of the state" CD booklet, Tom used his Fender Strat too on the record.
Also been waiting for this one for a long time, perfect choices here, thanks!
When reverb was selling Jerry Finn’s gear some of the pictures they took still had tape and sharpie marks on the amps and pedals with the settings he commonly used.
Should try and recreate Daron’s toxicity tone
I 2nd this! Big expansive tone!
Dude...this was amazing! Been waiting for this one! Thank you! I love that guitar...one day...one day I'll have it! Take care Fluff!
He’s one of the ones who got me into guitar in the first place! Love the late 90’s / early 2000’s tone.
Green Day's Dookie tone?
Yes. Second this.
jb into jcm800 will get you 99.9%
I doubt it. Nobody can ever recreate that tone perfectly
A JCM 800 is what billy uses. He has a signature pedal AND amp. Its fairly easy to achieve it
@@matthewkuhns7303 I mean, you're half-right. Billie uses two Marshall Plexi heads, but they ARE modded in a way where they have a little more gain and pretty much behave in the same way that a JCM 800 does.
Nice job my man! I'm a big TD fan and love his guitar tone over the years. Gonna have to borrow from your tips!
The tape machine plugin made such a huge difference and got you so much closer to the enema of the state tone! Nice job Fluff!
Great job. I love Toms tone from his Boxcar Racer days
My favorite too, I heard he used Dumble, Hiwatts and Matchless amps on that album.
@@JimboSlice44 I recently bought a HIWATT DR103 and I can definitely hear why he would go that route
Boxcar is probably his best project and record
Amazing video, helped me get his tone that I’ve been trying to recreate for years 🤟
This was cool, thanks!
Perfection, Fluff. Spot on in my book. Thanks for your work
Great job man, I would say that tone is pretty accurate. Love your Strat too BTW.
this is close as i ever heard it! great job
Noel Gallagher’s tone on Definitely Maybe?
Would love to see this ! Especially supersonic or live forever
Would love that!
Yup
X100^
That would be great
i really enjoyed the explanation, thanks
really great job :)
Love this Kind of videos
To me this sounds too fizzy and squishy, it doesn't sound like it would be articulate enough for the riffs in Dumpweed or Dysentery Gary. It kinda sounds like it was run through a Big Muff to me.
This is the 3rd recreation video I've seen and all sound about the same
it sounds cool - but not that close to orig. the original is alot cleaner i think! but like i said - still sounds sick!
I agree. I think it’s a *cool* tone, but I always thought of Tom’s blink tone as deceptively clean.
It’s an attempt to recreate
@@kevinbothwell8425 yeah def, especially listening to boxcar racer where he plays in a way thats a lot easier to aurally decipher
You're THE man this is dope
First video I've seen of yours. Your seem cool; the info was straight, and good; and I enjoyed seeing the A/B with the on-screen plug-ins.
Therefore: I've subscribed.
Good luck with it all mate,
Cheers,
JpD.
The cab and speakers are a big piece in the Enema of the State tone, or any recorded or live tone for that matter. A Marshall 4x12 cab with Greenbacks and V30s will get you close (along with 121 + U67/U87 mics), as Jerry Finn had those (maybe Mojotones for the Greenbacks) in his Marshall cabs when they were sold from the Reverb sale a while ago. Testing an IR of that with a Les Paul and Strat, along with the Triple Rec and JCM 900, and it's basically there. Gives a nice blend of vintage and modern tone. Finn's tones always seemed to be very mid-heavy, smooth, and just massive. Definitely a great recreation though nice work.
Dude this is suuuuuuuuuch a great video!!
Sounds great!
Tom is probably my favorite guitarist. Love the vids you've done with the strat you should hunt down his es 335 and do the self titled or Ava tone. That would be sick. Love ya fluff keep it up.
You did it!!!! Thank you sooooo much!!!!!
Wow nice tone and explination👌🏻🤘🏻
Sounds pretty close. My main critique would be the palm mutes need to be a bit chunkier. Good job.
Great job , Fluff 👍👍👍
awesome vid! its impossible to recreate a Les Paul tone with a strato and invader, but u made it the best possible! hats off sir!
Enema of the state is one of My favorite all time records. As long as the tone, is great. Tom is not technically a gifted guitar player, however he did something very little guitar players in any genre did. He plays a style so particular with such solid tone that You know when he's playing.
Everyone should check out Rick Beato’s video on all the small things it’s another good breakdown, good job fluff
Hey Fluff! Great tones, Blink was part of my youthness. Great to see these tones been recreated by you!
The one tone I’d really like to see you recreating is Fletcher’s from pennywise from the album About time..
Cheers from Brazil! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
thank you heaps! very inspiring .. I have the uad tape and comp, very helpfull on the guitar bus!
Love that CD such great songs and a happy time, are you back to using Logic now? Great video.
Awesome man!! Tom is one of the most underrated guitar players.. he’s my favorite artist. 🤘🏻😎
It's too metal sounding for Tom's tone imo
Agreed
Yeah I was trying to figure out what sounded off and that’s a good description. Maybe too much low end on the guitar?
I think it’s a combination of too much rectifier, which adds a more American metal sound, along with him using a rockerverb instead of a JCM because the RV tends to be a bit more saturated and “metal” for lack of a better word
yeah toms sound is more clean and telephonic, i think it needs less distortion and less low and high. or more mid.
Honestly the problem with all of these vids tbh.
Great vid! What amp settings did you have on the Mesa? Also.. If I haven't already missed it, the shape of punk to come!
That bass plugin sounds amazing!
Pretty close! Nice job!
dude thats spot on !
This video is awesome. I have a Fender TD Strat and would love to experiment with it for a project. Do you think this recreated tone would sound great on a full recording?
I love my Tom Delonge guitars! Nice tone Fluff
I love that heavy intro to the video :D
Littleredguitars2 always nailed Tom’s tone on a Axe Effects every time i watched his covers.
That man kicks so much butt
I'm currently 26 and I have been watching Littleredguitars2 since I was like 13-14. That man has dedicated so many years to nailing Tom's tone. That dude eats and breathes punk rock.
His solo instrumental stuff is cool as well! Tasty riffs
Littlered (Jon) also an incredible songwriter I think we should say
Yes his dammit cover is spot on 👌🏻👌🏻
I remember when Musician's Friend had that Strat for less than $500. CRAZY!
Dude when I started playing, fender mexi's were $349...every damn time..my squire classic vibes tele with the big ass headstock was $449.
yea and at the time I thought $499 was too much for a guitar MIM cause the standards were going for $350.... Wish I would've bought a Delonge signature or 2 or 3....
Yeah man, i listened to it side by side, and its pretty much spot on. Good job. I love blink, and Tom's tone. this Video is rad. Thanks man.
that stratocaster is imo one the most beautiful strat signatures oute there, that colors with the metal single pot and the humbucker looks awesome
This was awesome!! Can you do mark hoppus bass tone? I have his bass so I dont want to use a virtual bass lol. I have gotten close on logic but that punk bass is where its at.
Please do Jade Puget's guitar tone from Sing The Sorrow. That's a hard one to get.
Dropping that AFI knowledge
This was the closest yet . Killer job
Really good job! As you said you were pretty close to Tom’s 2000’s sound. Just as an opinion though, if you got your sound closer to the orange-only you did at 8:22 I think you would be even closer to the actual record sound (it’s hard to get it at a 100% I think mainly because Tom’s on-studio improvisation). Amazing job anyways, never heard anyone get closer than this! Cheers!
Love this video. I went back and listened to Tom’s tone on this song, and thought maybe here there’s a bit of attack missing? Like the front of the note is a bit lost.
Wondering how you would attempt to get that back in?
Genuinely wondering cause I absolutely loved this video and the tone you arrived at.
Man that tone brought back so many good memories!
My thoughts: the midrange isn’t quite there, and there’s too much fizz. I think what you need is the Marshall JCM 800, and more of that than the Rectifier. I think Jerry Finn recorded with an sm57 and a 421 Ribbon mic. Based on my ears, I believe that the mid is a little bit scooped on the Marshall, and less scooped on the Rectifier. Also, it doesn’t sound as tight as Tom’s tone without a drive pedal. I think Tom particularly liked the OCD, but I think you could get similar results with any tube screamer type of pedal. Another huge part of Tom’s tone is in the playing. I’ve had one of his Fenders for a few years now and I noticed that playing with lower gain and using a drive pedal, there’s typically a lot more room for dynamics. You’ve really got to wail on the strings and dig in with your pick, especially on those palm mutes. I enjoyed this video and it was cool to see your mixing process! It makes me happy to see videos about Tom’s tone. I’d love to hear your take on doing the same thing with the Gibson/self titled tone!
Awesome video are there any cheaper amps the mimic the triple Rec?
Dude Ranch is my favorite DeLonge tone.
Yeah I was hoping he was gonna try and do dammit
@@DeadHandBlues i think Dude Ranch was a JCM 900 dual reverb.
@@daveeatworld Oh true! Well he should buy one!
@@daveeatworld Oh true! Well he should buy one!
dude ranch is my favorite album but I truly hate the guitar tone lol
I’m so fucking on board with this even before the video started.
I'm sorry that "All The Small Things" is what you think of when you think of blink-182 & Tom's guitar tone.
Same
Seriously. I think of Anthem Pt. 2, Dammit, Feeling this, and Adam’s Song
Dysentery Gary has a good tone
Lol. I immediately think of his tone from aliens exist
Very interesting to see you go through it. ATST is fun but the one I've had the most trouble nailing down is Going Away to College. There's this riff he does as sort of an intro and again as an "after-chorus" with picking and palm muting off the 7th and 9th frets. Whenever I try to play it straight into a Marshall, the individual picking sort of get drowned out by the notes that ring out. Especially with how fast he plays it. I think he must've blended some of the high end and middle end to help it get a bit sharper and stand out.
Sounds great! Do you have an affliate link for the submission audio punk bass?
peddlrr.com/bruce-submission-audio-punkbass/
When I started gigging with my first band at 13 I had a Marshall MG30 solid state combo that I absolutely destroyed from cranking the volume to be heard over our drummer at small clubs that didn't mic amps. My dad (not knowing anything about gear or guitars) surprised me one day and had bought a Dual Rectifier Trem-O-Verb head and a Marshall 4x12 cab from a friend of his coworker for like, $600. I was OBSESSED with Tom and his guitar tone at the time and had no idea I had hit the jackpot. Still one of my favorite amps of all time!
What a nice Story! Very good Deal!
I’ve been able to get pretty close with my DSL 20 head and some EQ in my HX effects. But this is super close
I’ve been thinking about getting a dsl20hr myself. Right now I run an original Peavey 5150 block letter and a line 6 helix.
DSL20 w/ Helix is the best tone. Same here man. 🤘🏻
Haven't watched yet but I'm SO AMPED
I love this series, can you do Alex lifesons tone from the early days next?
Epic!
I love Toms tone. I think I was able to get really close with my rig which was an es 335 with a Duncan invader through a ts9 then into an egnater tweaker , then a strat with a pearly gates through the ts9 into an orange crush pro.
I really don't hear the Tom signature tone at all - far too midrangey and dark. It needs a whole lot more brightness on the top end and grind in the middle, with the body of the bass to back it all up.
One of my favorite albums of all time. Reason I picked up a guitar. I would say ‘Dumpweed’ would be my favorite example of Tom’s guitar tone.
Close, but not the same-needs more YEAD
Can you try out the Jack White tone? It was one of the first guitar tones I have ever really enjoyed and was, along with Ritchie Blackmore's tone, the one that inspired me to pick up a guitar
Man Thanks for this Amazing Vid! Could you Share Both Amp settings?
Just pause the video. That’s them. Basically everything at noon, gain way down😊
@@RiffsAndBeards thanks man.. ill do my best with amplitube lol..
Got very close Fluff, i think i got quite close with my Fractal too. Takes me back this tune.
It would be awesome to see you do a video on how you set up your gear to blend multiple heads. Has he done this?
Dear Fluff,
Would you please attempt to recreate the guitar tones of the Whitesnake ‘87 sound? I’ve always considered John Sykes tone to be the pinnacle of Hair Metal. Thanks in Advance!🤘🏼
If you haven't seen it, Leon Todd did a video recreating that tone!
though as fluff has a JP2C now, thats a great idea
John Evered I’ve watched Leon’s videos, and I enjoyed them thoroughly! My main reason for wanting Fluff to attempt is because he owns the JP2c, but Leon predominantly uses Fractal.
Noice! I do this with a dual rec and a stiletto ace
awesome
Great video and all, but are you sure about that palm mute on A during the intro where the drum does the flam and you go back to F? I always thought he just struck the guitar with his hand hovered over a G power chord
How did you blend the amps into one cabinet? Or did you record one and re-amp other?
I had that exact guitar back in the day, and I have been looking for that guitar nowdays. Where did you find his signatur guitar?
I need to know!!!! 🤩🤩🤩🤩
Great research, surprised you knew Tom didn't record with his fender
I was hoping for Dude Ranch tone..... Still cool stuff bro.
I typically think of dumpweed, dysentery Gary, Anthem pt.2, or going a little older dammit, m&ms, carrousel
Entertaining stuff man. J Mascis and, or Matt Pike would be very awesome.
YES!!!
So if we're doing 2000s Invader bridge pickup tones, any chance you'll do Nile's Black Seeds of Vengence?
should've used the pop punk ezx from ezdrummer haha awesome video either way!
What are your settings on the Mesa Triple Rectifier and the Orange at?
