To be fair Nucky actually gave him pretty decent advice. Obviously they’re gangsters so they only truly understand force and power and men believing where power lies. But Nucky basically told Lucky, “Torrio already had me pretty much sold, if you didn’t rush this I would’ve sold to whatever you needed.”
Its also a form of respect to bother to chat someone up over a meal, putting a little effort in to appreciate their time, especially if you are peers, you are asking someone to do something not selling a couch.
@@prind142 I guess it depends on the individual. We all like a bit of asskissing, but most times id rather you show respect for my time by not wasting it on small talk. We both know I got something to offer which you want, so might as well get to the point.
@@aesilian Then you lose all ability to size someone up before you do business with them. Judge if their genuine, or if there's another motive.
@Prind 14 im actually different from that. I dislike the BS. Tell me what you want and I'll tell you if i can give it to you. Wasting my time is annoying.
What I’ve learned from reading the comments is that both forms are absolutely viable, it just depends on who you’re dealing with. In this particular scene and with nucky in general, you gotta kiss a little ass and do some small talk. If I had to guess Torrio is a bit easier to deal with and talk to you can probably just cut straight to the chase with him.
Knowing when to keep your mouth shut is more important that whatever you might have to say.
Exactly!!!

Not exactly, it show you at least care
@@JohnDoe-cj6uk - They wouldn’t be at the table if they didn’t care. No one’s winning points for caring there. Silly. 😂.
There's no more important skill in this life than knowing how to listen. Most are just waiting for their turn to talk and don't give a shit what you said.
The actor who played Arnold Rothstein was incredible in this series 🤌🏼

Who's lucky?
The impatient dude
Same...
@@HVAC356the impatient young guy in this scene is Lucky Luciano before he became the too dog and creates the commission.
I love how Nucky checked Luciano for being rude and crude. Lucky knew from Thompson's response that he had spoke out of turn
Empire had to have won BEST COSTUME DESIGN. The clothing in this show was impeccable!
Can’t get over how elegant and suave these guys look in their penny collar shirts and marvellously patterned ties!
Ever seen peaky blinders? In terms of costume design, boardwalk doesn't even compare.
@sneeky snake123 I have...great show. You're right, no comparison...Boardwalk way better.

That's one thing about Nucky: he always had a way with words, and knew how to get his point across, while skillfully making the other guy look like a complete idiot. I learned a lot about handling smart-asses in my life, by watching Boardwalk Empire.
If you learned a lot from a tv show, rather than real life, I feel sorry for you and all in your in acquaintance om with.

'Small talk' is part of human interactions and it is very important. It seems futile on the surface, but it helps create bond by sharing emotions, discovering common interests and, as said in other comments, it shows respect. It tells "you know I come here for a reason but I want to make a point to make you feel that you are more important than this business matter". Of course, it is a little dance, no one is foolish, but everyone is receptive to some attention (or even flattery) provided it is done the right way, even by your worst enemy.
it's social grease. 🧐
Ain't nothing getting past this dude. Got his eye on Nucky _and_ the door

You cut out the best part at the end where they all look at each other and say, "It's Boardwalk Empire time!" And start absolutely blasting the hell out of one another.

That’s the best part

Honestly there’s a whole eon of gentlemanliness that needs to be brought back. Sick of the boors
Look at Butchie
Just a props to the subtitles on this. Very surprised to see “Messrs” as not only correct grammar you don’t see too often as well as proof they weren’t auto-generated.
Man coulda got clapped if he acted like that in the wrong company.
I watched every episode of every season with anticipation on Sunday evening. Loved the series. Final season was 2 seasons in 1.

Nucky and Rothstein scenes were always great but especially when Luciano was being impudent. Some of the best moments.
Luciano had to be whacked for his disrespect the same night. Big mistake!!!
But he was a made guy and the crates weren’t

Rothstein was the GOAT in this series.
Torrio negotiating and "Big" Jim, just sits and listens. Torrio was already the Boss of the Outfit!!!

Perfect person to play the character or Salvatore "Lucky" Luciano
Clearly Lucky learned everything he could from these people, give that he would become Capo di tutti Capi
They needa do an Arnold Rothstien show like this one
This show was awesome. Need to binge watch.
This is a good lesson to the young fella's trying to do business with old heads. Sit and conversate with them and learn the art of the way they talk as well as nuances in the conversation. Be careful to not imitate too much as it may be seen as disrespect.
Agree, but young people of every generation need to learn respect for elders, and with younger people today thinking they csn Google and CZcams answers rather than learning offline, I pity the future.
Literally interrupts a man IN POWER in the middle of being complimented in a sophisticated conversation with another powerful man.
This is masterclass of what not to do in negotiations. Good thing there is usually that guy who can usually smooth things over...temporarily.
He went to find his short pants and a corner

Got the Biggie Smalls eyes
I loved Arnold rosterin cool and discipline
Most Boss shiii ever bruh Goated
i consider myself an appreciate of the some of the old ways, and the art of conversation still holds a fascination for me.
That was neither ambition nor impatience. That was disrespect and arrogance.
That's why Thompson spoke up, essentially asking his boss to correct him.
An empty vessel makes the loudest noise.
There's roughly a 0% chance that anyone in his position would cut off a sales pitch. That's clearly going well.

Why the hell can't Hollywood give us a show on the New York Mafia and say start it at end of war that started the commission or beginning of war and just keep rolling through the years and decades. With all the families with New York mafia being the lead not so much certain boss. I would love it...what you all think it anyone reads this.

Lucky Luciano flaws impatience and haughtiness could cause a misunderstanding in a conversation.
Respect can also be read as defense, sometimes.

So many people that should have been discarded very early on throughout the series

Is it believable that lucky truly ended up on top. What would have happened i wonder if that nitwit nephew of his hadn’t of got caught up, or if nucky had said “ kill him, what do I care?”
It’s believable because in real life there was no nucky. It was just AR and the other people at the table, Lucky probably had more merit since he was backed by AR.
