The first time Slint played in Chicago, the first time I saw them play, was at Club Dreamers in March 1989. The first song they played was a cover version of Rise Above, Black Flag. It's quite possible, even likely, Fred was there that night. I knew Fred when he was a door guy at Lounge Ax and he was the drummer in Trench Mouth.

@@abcdefghijkl5408 eh, I think you two are saying the same thing. fred doesn't feel the need to go for actual punchlines more than half the time, just an amusing specific observation can be often enough for him and his audience. i enjoy the routine he does here, as it's concise. his "stand up for drummers" was pretty unfunny due to filler overload.

this act is exactly what Fred & Carrie would riff about with each other & it became a show. the way Fred analyzes guitarists & drummers here is how he & Carrie break down Portland’s many scenes…and it’s Hilarious, both the show & Portland IRL.

Just FYI, when he's doing Norwegian strumming he's actually also singing in Norwegian.. Also, his impression of Norwegian folk guitarists showing off the chords they play was unbelievably spot on. Never noticed before, but once he did it, tons of Norwegian guitarists just flashed before my eyes doing that exact thing, although less exaggerated of course.
    Fantastic show.

I think he's funny doing comedy...this feels awkward because he's not really a good musician even though he thinks he is. It's like, "Hey, I'm Fred Armisen. You might know me from SNL, but I also can sort of play guitar and drums, I know a dab of music theory, and I really impress myself at home."

As someone that started out as a jazz musician, was a pop and rock producer for major labels for 20 years and now teaches music theory at a conservatory, I think he might be more spot on than you realise. He might have improved it by using an Am7 instead of an Em to illustrate a self-important long night.
Guitar players using Am7 in the 0 position are the the Hitlers of the music world.
Just something profound you fully understand after 30 years around studios and touring.

It works for the jokes. Funny virtuosity gets pretty old for me. Louis Cole is the exception though because he's just so ridiculous.
That being said, if an actual jazz drummer got up there the jokes would only be for drummers. These are for anyone that knows a musician.
I mean, the secret to writing naturally in odd meter is to learn to dance to it, but that kinda ruins his joke. It's a funny joke that's true for anyone that ever tried to dance at a Tool show.

Hipsters are music fans with imaginary rules that cut them off from large swatches of music.
They're the alt rock equivalent of blues dads that say BB King was the greatest because that gives them an excuse to play one note (poorly).
Every odd time noise rock band is following in King Crimsons wake (of Poseidon), and an honest KC fan will tell you it's music for a specific mood.
Hipsters also get real pissy when you bring up people like Aretha Franklin or Whitney Houston because deep down they know how great they were, but their persona is built on worshipping bands you've never heard of.
