  • Badd Medicine here and its Harry Potter reaction time, well sort of.
We are back with the Fantastic Beasts reactions. This was a solid follow up to the first one. We are introduced to seeing Johnny Depp's character. He has an interesting character. Seeing some of the visuals in here were great. Some good twist and turns. We do agree that the first is still better. We agree, its really hard to touch what Harry Potter was. But it is more from the Potter universe. So thats a plus.
The powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald was captured in New York with the help of Newt Scamander. But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escapes custody and sets about gathering followers, most of whom are unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore enlists Newt, his former Hogwarts student, who agrees to help once again, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world..

I loved the 1st movie- the feel, creativity and beauty. I really like how Eddie Redmayne created Newt and love the fantastic beasts and, of course, my favourite Kowalsky.
The next 2 movies- not so much. Maybe you are right and they are fillers.
I really wish they still make the next 2 movies and we get to see how the stories continue and get resolved. I hope they return to the feel and flair of the first movie and let the fantastic beasts cast their magic over us.
I give a 4.6 to the first movie and a 3 to the second.

This was the lesser one. I felt the circus investigation scene was just a bit too hand-wavey. Gold dust seeing and hearing past, boom. A feather, boom. The cat creature, boom. Almost like "hey if you've never seen any Potterverse movie at all, here's all the fun setting tones and ideas in one scene." Hamfisted and unnecessary.

A couple of connections between this and harry potter that i didn't see mentioned below:
    1. When Nicholas Flemmel opens the cabinet the sorcerors stone was in it
    2. The mirror that Dumbledore looked in is the same mirror Harry saw his parents in
    3. The snake Nagini is Voldemorts snake
    4. Leta lastrange is an in law to bellatrix, LaStrange is Bellatrix's married name. Bellatrix and narcissa (draco's mom) are sisters and they are Black's cousins to sirius black
    5. You saw grindelwald in the mirror. Grindelwald is the same person that stole the elder wand. Him and Dumbledore had a blood pack in the past.
You learn SO SO much more about Grindelwald and Dumbledores in the Deathly Hollows book.

Also... this series does not end with the next movie, it is supposed to be 5 movies, climaxing with the final duel between Dumbledore and Grindlewald in 1945.
And speaking of them... (you learn this in the books) they meet as young men and become inseparable until the death of Arianna, Dumbledore's little sister.. Not explicitly said in the books, but definitely hinted, is that they were lovers. This was confirmed by J.K.R. later. Finally the reaction I have been waiting for.
Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwad were lovers. Dumbledore is gay, he was in love with Grindelwald.
That's why the made a bloodpact/oath so that they can't fight each other.
The ones you see on the Mirror of Erised were young Dumbledore and Grindelwald.
The Mirror of Erised is spelled Desire when it reads backward.
That mirror shows you your deepest desire. And Albus' deepest desire was to be one with Grindelwald. That's why they're exchanging blood.
Their photograph was in the book Hermione read in the dean forest during winter when she and Harry camped.
The book called The Life and The Lies of Albus Dumbledore by Rita Skeeter.

Austen has a wonderful grasp of characters that shines through all the 19th century etiquette and mannerisms. I think you'd really enjoy the 1995 _Sense and Sensibility,_ not least because it has Alan Rickman playing a genuinely good guy for a change, and many other cast members you'll recognize from the HP movies, including star and adaptation writer Emma "Trelawny" Thompson!

A lot of people hated on this movie in particular, but it’s actually my favorite of the FB series so far. I love the tie in of WWII with Grindelwald gaining followers and being the wizarding world’s version of Hitler as the real one rises to infamy. Compelling speeches that ease the listeners into a distaste for muggles, then a disdain, followed by the discrimination of muggles, that could likely lead to a holocaust of muggles. The implications are there in this film without it being over the top obvious.
Fun Fact: Nagini (the maladictus snake girl) will eventually become a snake permanently. That is the nature of what she is. And guess who ends up with a pet snake named Nagini…!!!
Also, to answer the question at the end: I think it’s harder to do a good sequel series than a good prequel. A sequel has to follow something great and keep the audience engaged. A prequel simply has to establish the lore that’s already there and already has the fanbase built in (usually by them having requested it).

But the reason book readers dislike them is because they break a lot of established rules and lore from the original series. The ages of characters don’t match, Dumbledore taught transfiguration not defense against the dark arts, Jacob remembering contradicts what we know about the obliviate spell, etc, etc. If you don’t focus much on that, they’re fun movies to watch! I do really like the fantastic beast movies and find them entertaining. I don’t necessarily think people think they’re bad movies deep down. But coming from someone who grew up with the books and the movies, I think the reason people say they don’t like it as much is because they can’t have that sentimental attachment in the same way as they can with the original series. especially if you grew up reading the books that has crazy amounts of detail. For me the original series of books and movies were my entire life between the ages 10 and 20. And so the magic and love I felt reading those books and watching those movies can’t be replicated. Although I still do like the fantastic beasts a lot it’s not the same.

There is a very subtle clue in the last film that Credence had survived and escaped.
There is a brief shot of a small scrap of obscurius shred that seemed to be floating like teh rest, but there is the barest hint of intentionality in its movement, a hint of scampering up the debris in the subway area to the open air of the street level above. It wasn't pure 'floating'; as I said, very subtle.
Nice to see both Fawkes the phoenix's origin story as well as Voldemort's Nagini origin story.
I see Grindelwald (at the blue-fire circle) has the Elder Wand...
The Appleton Oak speaks of the A-list actors in HP...
The Fat Lady (who tried to break the glass in "Prisoner of Azkaban") and Barty Crouch Sr both starred together in a UK comedy series "The Vicar of Dibley".
The actors who played Albus Dumbledore Part 2, Uncle Vernon, and Rita Skeeter also had prominent roles in Tim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow".
After the HP franchise ended, the next thing Daniel Radcliffe and Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon Dursley) did was star in London's West End and NYC's Broadway in a revival of "Equus".
The Harry Potter saga took 17 years to write, and the quality shows.
The Fantastic Beasts franchise was more an afterthought, and it shows.
"The Cursed Child" is a sequel, written to only be a stage play.
I believe it's best to leave the Harry Potter saga alone, but I do think there is room for more stories set in the Wizarding World. The Fantastic Beasts franchise was more 'stories from the Wizarding World' than additional HP canon. I think simpler stories like maybe 'Travels with Newt Scamander' would be better. It's a wide enough concept to not be crowded in by HP canon, plus the Wizarding World physics is expanded enough to welcome additional magical laws and concepts from other areas of the globe and other isolated and indigenous magic-based cultures.
