  • Badd Medicine here and its reaction time with Fantastic Beast!
    This movie wasn't badd. These 3 movies had awesome life lessons, granted not as much as Harry Potter, but still a good amount. We loved the animals that were introduced. We understand some just don't like these movies, but we would like to see the final 2 Fantastic Beasts movies. We enjoyed most of these characters. Great to have Jude Law as Dumbledore. Eddie Redmayne as Newt was awesome. We love Dan Folger and Katherine Waterston as fantastic! Really hope we see them all again.
    Plot:
    Professor Albus Dumbledore knows the powerful, dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald is moving to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts magizoologist Newt Scamander to lead an intrepid team of wizards and witches. They soon encounter an array of old and new beasts as they clash with Grindelwald's growing legion of followers.

    And Oak was on point with his after movie discussion about abusive relationships - "Who will love you now, Dumbledore?" That was horribly manipulative - and sad considering that Albus would spend the rest of his life alone.

      It's also very interesting that Gellert implies that all this time he has still been "loving" Dumbledore. He thinks that he has somehow been adding something to Dumbledore's life that he can't get elsewhere. While he may never find romantic love again, we see in the original series how many people love him as a teacher, friend, and confidant. We see how many lives he touches and the loyalty he inspires.

    29:39 That "big reveal" isn't a reveal at all: this was all in the original Deathly Hallows book, the story about Dumbledore and Grindelwald and that Ariana got killed. They cut it out of the movie. The actual reveal here is that Ariana was an Obscurial. That was the only part that wasn't in the book.

    • @catcoolcat8103
      @catcoolcat8103 Před rokem +41

      True, and I totally predicted that plotpoint as soon as the concept of Obscurial got introduced in the first Fantastic Beasts, so there wasn't much for me in that scene except the vindication that I was right. It was a pretty popular theory too so it's not like I'm the only one in that boat.

    • @ventusbruma1039

      That wasn't the secret, or the only one. The secret was that his brother had a son and that the son was Credence. We all call Albus, Dumbledore, but it is a family name. The Secrets of Dumbledore, means the family, not the man.

    • @catcoolcat8103
      @catcoolcat8103 Před rokem +15

      @@ventusbruma1039 Ariana's condition is also Aberforth's secret so that all fits. But the Credence reveal was also lacking, because of the ending of the second movie.
      If Grindelwald had only said Credence was a Dumbledore, that would've been fine, but he specifically said he was Albus' brother. Which made no sense whatsoever with the lore revealed in Deathly Hallows. Grindelwald is also trying to deceive Credence, but what difference would lying about his relation from brother to nephew do for his motivation at that point in the story? None.
      And then in this movie, they walk back that retcon by making him his nephew instead. But that only brings out more complications. It makes Aberforth holding a grudge against Albus in Deathly Hallows look much weaker since he abandonned his own child, leading him to turn into an Obscurial worse than Ariana ever was or got the chance to be quote unquote. Granted he didn't know of Credence's existence or conditions for most of it, but still.

    Dumbledores true feelings toward Grindlewald are all over the last book of HP (which they never showed in the movies). The apex for me, is when Harry is with Dumbledore at "Kings Cross Station" for that last time:
    _"'At last [harry] said, 'Grindelwald tried to stop Voldemort going after the wand. He lied, you know, pretended he never had it.'
    Dumbledore nodded, looking down at his lap tears still glittering on the crooked nose.
    'They say he showed remorse in later years, alone in his cell at Nurmengard. I hope that it is true. I would like to think he did feel the horror and shame of what he had done. Perhaps that like to Voldemort was his attempt to make amends...to prevent Voldemort from taking the Hallow..."
    '... or maybe from breaking into your tomb?' suggested Harry, and Dumbledore dabbed his eyes."_
    To the casual reader, it might not seem like a lot....but knowing their love for one another, this little bit would have meant the WORLD to Albus. Harry may not have been the best at everything, but his true super power was empathy.

For it, there are times where I think he is far more terrifying than Voldemort for it. He seems reasonable in a way that Voldemort isn’t, and therefore is all the more terrifying for it. If I had to guess, between Grindelwald and Voldemort, Grindelwald is the far more dangerous opponent.

  • @noxfior
    @noxfior Před rokem +105

    We pretty much know from the Harry Potter books and movies that Dumbledore had no partner in his life, so for him, Grindelwald was that first, intense love that leaves a mark on you forever, to the point you never pursue other romantic bonds in life.
    Thing is, for them to make that pact, it means there was a time when those two had similar thinking (confirmed in the books, can't remember if it was confirmed in the HP movies). Dumbledore was therefore on the same path that lead Grindelwald to his extremism. Ariana's death was Dumbledore's wake-up call from that toxic mindset, which in turn also made his relationship with Grindelwald toxic, so that's where his path diverged from Grindelwald's. You can see that Grindelwald himself is hurt when he asks Dumbledore who is gonna love him now. I agree that it's a common tactic of manipulation in abusive relationships, but I also think it was a genuine lover lashing out as well, bc he's clearly in love with Dumbledore as well in his own toxic way (both actors did a great job to convey the romantic feelings vs the conflict of ideals).
    They're completely at odds with their ideals, and their ideals come first, above any feelings they may have for each other, so this is the only outcome possible for them.
    Regarding the scene of him walking away:
    There's a pattern of behavior we see in Dumbledore when it comes to personal relationships: he seems infinitely kind to a lot of people, even close to them, but whether now or in his old age, if you osy attention he never gets too close to those he may care about, despite them being infinitely loyal to him. Like, even with Harry. We can argue that he cared for him in his own way, but he was still raising the kid like a pig for slaughter, as Snape put it, ready to be sacrificed for the greater good. I think this behavior in personal relationships is due to the scar that was left on him the only time he left himself truly love and trust a person, a time when he lost his rationality and sight of what's best for the world around him, which ended up in the senseless death of an innocent.
    I know people who see him as good, others who see him as evil - I think this is a good time as any to point out that Dumbledore is actually a compelling gray character: cares for people, cares for the greater good, so he's not totally bad, but he can be ruthless and doesn't have qualms using and sacrificing people, innocent or otherwise, in order to save a greater number of people. We see it so much, even in these movies (see him casually saying that he didn't intend for Jacob to be tortured in front of everyone - nevertheless, Jacob was still put in dangerous situations Dumbledore sent him in without knowledge of what was to happen, just because he thought that Jacob would be valuable to the cause, to prove a point). I was honestly surprised when the Qilin chose him as someone pure of heart. I wonder what the Qilin sensed or if this should be considered a fault in storytelling, as it may contradict what we see of his character.

    • @debbiewoweries9912
      @debbiewoweries9912 Před rokem +23

      I absolutely love your analysis of Dumbledore as a character! The Qilin choosing him actually made a lot of sense to me because while the Qilin was looking for someone with a pure heart it was also looking for a natural/great leader. We all know that Dumbledore strives for the greater good (even though his methods are questionable at best) so the Qilin choosing him made sense to me, especially when you consider that he‘s been offered the position of Minister of Magic multiple times. And I think while Dumbledore is a grey character it‘s important to remember that he will always make the difficult decisions like choosing to sacrifice a few to save the many which is a quality that a lot of natural leaders possess. I don’t think he‘s pure of heart at all but I think he‘s trying to be better than he was and I think that that’s what the Qilin saw. (Obviously this is just my interpretation and I have to admit that I am pretty biased because Dumbledore is one of my favorite characters)

    • @noxfior
      @noxfior Před rokem +12

      @@debbiewoweries9912 Thank you! Also, I agree - it's a matter of what one intends with pure at heart. If we go by the standard interpretation, then someone gray would't fit into the category. Dobby and Luna, for example, fit the idea of a pure heart. If I may mention a complex character from another story whose hands are dirty with blood, yet still fits the idea of a pure heart, Wei Wuxian in The Untamed is a great example of a pure heart pushed to ugly extremes by the world around it, but ultimately uncorrupted.
      But if it was a mix of heart completely devoted to the greater good (which may translate to both really good and really bad actions) + leadership, then it made more sense for the Qilin to choose him. Personally, I find that his ruthlessness at times reaches inhumane levels with how rational and methodical it can get in setting sacrifices (see, Harry, but also how he ensnarred Snape, regardless of one's opinion on the latter), which is why I wouldn't call his heart pure by standard definition.

She is almost bursting in tears, because she misses him so much. And when she leaves the room, she actually casts a spell to help him ♥ Grindelwald doesn't kill the Qilin to use its blood. He kills it to make it his own, so it will choose him at the election. It's a coincidence, that he sees the future in it's blood. He sees the future in the water too and other places as well through out the movie 🙂 I wish they would make movies about the first Order of the Phoenix and the first war with Voldemort as well - starting with James, Sirius, Peter, Remus and Lily meeting at Hogwarts - ending where the first HP book started. Greetings from Denmark 🙂

    Dumbledore used the Deluminator to bring himself and Creedence back out of the mirror verse. It was used in the first movie by Albus Dumbledore to turn off the street lights before Hagrid flew the motorcycle in with Harry on it. And it brought Ron back to Harry and Hermione in Deathly Hallows part 1. Remember Albus invented it himself.

    Nice to see some positivity. Too many people refused to give this movie a chance. When I saw Mads Mikkelson was cast, I was incredibly excited to see where he would take the character of Grindelwald. He played a wonderfully real, sinister, and subtle villain, exactly what I hoped for given his previous role as Hannibal Lecter. I think this series is better with him in it and I hope WB continues forward.
    And from what I heard, JK Rowling's screenplay was even better (looking forward to reading it in future) than the film itself. Hearing that gives me hope.

    What I really love about fantastic beast that it just follows our real history from 1920 to 1945. It is clever to set the scenes in Germany where Grindelwald is declared not guilty. I still remember the chills I've got as a German in the cinema seeing Mads enjoying the masses, standing there with a smug face and looking into the camera. This is real, raw, scary power. And to my mind the second and the third film show you perfectly how you can manipulate people in a political way and get under their skin. Especially at these times we live in I was actually terrified to see that in a HP movie and understands how much this franchise again teaches us so much important lessons.
    For me Harry Potter is how you grow up and transform from a child into an adult, experiencing all the wonderful and tragic things in the world the first time. Fantastic beasts helps you to understand the bigger "society" dimension.
    Maybe therefore Grindelwald is much more dangerous than Voldemort. Voldemort just wanted to have power. Grindelwald embodies a perspective of the world, how it should be. Like a infections inception. It will not die if he dies. And this is the same with extreme national position nowadays.
    P.s. I really liked your reactions! Great to have you as Potterheads now!!!

It was also nice to see Lally as a new inclusion to the team, I really really like her character a lot and hope to see her more in future movies! Jacob was great as comedic relief but it was also nice to see a Muggle who is just strong as those with magical blood in the adventures. I love to see Newt and Theseus's brotherly relationship that was explored more in this movie too. The ending when Dumbledore walks away in the snow was just so bittersweet every time I see it. The longing in his twinkled eyes as he gazes towards Jacob and Queenie's wedding, surrounded by their friends and loved ones, I just had a feeling that deep down, he may have hoped the same for Grindelwald and him. Anyways! I can't wait to see more of your future reactions!! ^^

    Thank you Badd Medicine, your reaction to Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts was one of the best.
    What a fun, emotional and insightful experience. The feelings, perspectives and discoveries throughout have impacted both viewers. The comparison of Oak’s viewpoint from the first Potter film to now, is heartfelt.
    I truly hope there are two more Fantastic Beasts. To clarify your point concerning their controversies, the first film was and is very beloved (from what I’ve seen). I don’t recall it having any issues, if there were it was minor.
    Some didn’t like the second film because they felt overwhelmed by the plot/character introductions. It may need to be watched more than once, to fully absorb everything. I enjoyed it even more the second time.
    It was also a little darker, whereas the first had a perfect balance of humour, light and dark. Though I think it’s cool that they didn’t just try to replicate the first and went with something different.
    The third’s controversy is because it was delayed more than three years, replacing of Johnny Depp, released at the same time of Depp’s trial, issues with Ezra Miller (Credence), as-well as comments to do with J.K Rowling.
    I think the first film is perfect, the second is really good and the third even more. There’s scenes in the second and third that are some of my favourite of all time; exhilarating, tear-inducing, heart-pounding, jaw-dropping.
    There’s also some genius moments, like the ending scene in the first one with the bakery; so clever. The characters, effects, MUSIC… I truly love the series. It’s such a fascinating perspective of the Wizarding World.
    It was so awesome to see Oak give this a 5/5, because there are some phenomenal moments, messages and meanings in this. Hopefully there’s more! If there isn’t, we still have all these to watch again.
    And we can go back to Harry Potter…

    Like about Fantastic Beast films :
    -fantastic beast variety and visual effects
    -more world-wide magic background (other countries, cultures, schools, ministries of magic)
    -Newt personality and character development (through the movies)
    -new interesting characters (Jacob, Queenie, Credence, Grindelwald, etc.)
    -more old character's background (Dumbledore)
    Dislike about the franchise :
    -sometimes incoherent regarding the canon established in the books
    -sometimes disappointing with the story (simplistic) or the magic background (not enough)
    Overall, a good and very interesting franchise but a little fragile with its basement.

    Oh boy, here we go...
    The main thing that irks me about this movie (and the second quite frankly) is the whole Queenie arc.
    When she first joined Grindelwald, it made no sense from the start. Even if he said to her she could marry Jacob, his anti-Muggle agenda was already out there and quite clear. He wasn't accused (and probably guilty, let's face it) of so many horrible crimes against the Muggle community for no reason, the man was wanted WORLDWIDE.
    And Queenie believes him at his word, even though his actions have already been publicly contradictary and he's done nothing so far to earn her trust? And she does not only believe him out of some desperation since the MACUSA is completely against marriage with Muggles, she truly believes him enough to pass the loyalty test of his blue flame circle in Crimes of Grindelwald. Not sure if it was explained in the movie but that's why some people got burned up trying to cross it.
    And then here she's shown to regret her decisions like a few months after and gets a complete redemption at the end of the movie? That makes no sense at all.

    • @BH-bp1su
      @BH-bp1su Před rokem +5

      Not trying to argue, just offering my perspective:
      She was struggling throughout the second film, even having a panic attack/breakdown. I would think because she is a Legilimens, her mindset would be complex. Being able to hear someone’s thoughts and feel them on another level-as she’s always shown having a heightened empathy-would be tremendous.
      She felt guilty about the way she got Jacob back, then that impacted her feelings towards the ‘crazy’ comment he made to her. The thought of her being crazy really gets to her. She was questioning, anxious and fearful of their future whilst wanting it so bad. She was also yearning and wildly protective of him.
      I can’t imagine how she felt in that moment with Grindelwald. Already feeling everything above and having Jacob-who’s vulnerable-next to her, near one of the most dangerous and powerful wizards. Her mindset would have been racing feeling all of that, what do you do in that situation?
      Perhaps she felt her power was strong enough she could get Jacob to safety? Jacob’s second ‘crazy’ comment in that moment of trying to figure out what to do (because Grindelwald was killing the ones that ran away), made her snap. She must have been so overwhelmed. We all make mistakes.
      I think she got through Grindelwald’s ring of fire because of her power. He can’t sense her true intentions. She clearly didn’t want to do it, as she screamed in agony going through the flames. Again, she made a mistake in a moment of tremendous emotion (because her power is tremendous and complex).
      I think she went not because she believes him but because of the culmination of all the above. She was continuously weary and afraid of the decision she made, but was trying to do the right thing (not telling Grindelwald everything, trying to help Jacob in the German ministry).
      She made a mistake and ended up in a dangerous situation that was difficult to get out of. You could tell she was trying to ignore Jacob because she knew what she did was wrong (as she cries at the table with Grindelwald and lights up when she thinks Grindelwald tells her to see ‘him’).
      Her arc shows that we make mistakes in desperate moments. It shows the complexity of the mind and the tremendous feelings we struggle with. Again, being a Legilimens makes it another level. It shows we can make our mistakes right and that they’re not who we really are.

    • @MR-ly1rc
      @MR-ly1rc Před rokem +2

      I personally am one of the few in my circle of friends who was not bothered by the Queen or stuff and did think it made sense. These are not black and white situations. When Grindlewald first approached Queenie she was very against him. He is simply a master manipulator. I think he was extremely careful and powerful with his wording and thoughts (as he knew she could read them.). By her sending the seeming honesty of his convictions she reconsidered things. Then in his final speech he went out of his way to sound innocent and say he had no problem with muggles (deliberately because Queenie was an important part of his strategy.). Jacob wouldn’t be open minded about marriage even in England where it was legal. So she felt completed desperate to convince Jacob to let Grindelwald solve their problems saying “he wants what we want.” And asking Jacob to just hear him out. Queenie is also pretty sheltered and there is a gullibility to her in my opinion. She hadn’t even ever talked to a no-man before Jacob. She is a trustworthy person so sees the best in others. A good amount of time passed (5 years in the storyline between the 2nd and 3rd movie.) Enough time for her to really see how bad things were with Grindlewald. I think she was very ashamed of her decision and scare as well. Feeling unworthy and hoping maybe to have a redemption option by being close to Gellert to know what was coming and do what she could to make it a little harder.

    At the end, the Quilin definitely should have bowed Jackob instead of Dumbledore. Where one was shown to be good and pure through the movie, being referred to by many characters to be a good person despite not being magical and then the other being obviously flawed, having had a twisted vision and agenda in his youth. It would have completed Jackobs character arc much better and really was a missed opertunety.

      Yeah! I was like "whaaaaat?" when the Qilin bowed to Albus. I really thought that it's gonna be Jacob because of how much this film's setting it up (Jacob playing with the Qilin, Dumbledore saying that Jacob has a full heart, Jacob being kind as always)

      I think the idea behind it is that Albus despises who he was and so thinks very little of himself now, and the Qilin proved he is changed man. Also, the magical beast isn’t going to acknowledge the muggle in comparison to a wizard. They live in a world where the muggles are oblivious to them and the beasts remain elusive to the non-magical world.

    Holy cow. 2 minutes into the movie and I'm sobbing LOL
    This one does feel different but I like it a lot since the actors are adults rather than high school age so the difficulties they face are some I can relate to and the sense of danger is very real. I always wished they made a psychological thriller style film during Voldemorts time of terror.
    Very much enjoy how dark this one is. The entire gloomy atmosphere is everything I want from an adult Harry Potter movie. Also, Credence just breaks my heart.
    When prisoner of Azkaban came out, it didn't get great ratings but now its considered the best of the series and I feel this film has potential to have a similar effect, in other words, I feel itll grow on people who disliked it the first time. I say this because I noticed the box office wasn't lookin too good.
    For some reason I felt the first one was childish, it was awesome and fun but I didn't *feel* much. Idk.
    A lot of people disliked Half blood prince but that one is probably my favorite so I feel its purely subjective too.

    Dumbledore realizing he may never find love again makes his saying in the original Potter books "Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, especially those who live without love." all the more poignant.
    Till this movie, it never occurred to me he included himself in that category of those who live without love.
    If anyone reading this comment is living without romantic love - Dumbledore lived without romantic love but ended up being the most beloved Headmaster of Hogwarts. Love comes in many forms. And if you don't have romantic love in your life (for whatever reason), its not the end of the world.

    Okay so hello, im a new subscriber and i regret not finding this channer earlier but i have spend like a day and a half binge watching all your HP and FB movie reviews and i have loved every second of it!
    now about fantastic beasts where do i start… i’m a hufflepuff myself and i genuinely believe there’s no one better to represent our house than Newt Scamander! He’s an amazing hero and protagonist and he deserves so much more credit and appreciation than what he gets, he’s a true hufflepuff if you search up the traits of that house, he’s always doing the right thing not because of glory or for praise but because he knows is the right thing to do, because he believes in justice and loyalty and defending his beliefs. that’s a true hufflepuff. and i think our house pretty much deserved to have the main spot since in the HP movies we didn’t get much besides Cedric (but he only sadly lasted one movie)… i can understand why some dislike FB but i don’t understand when people say it’s bad… like what are you calling bad exactly? nothing about Fantastic Beasts is bad, each movie has been amazing and is unique in their own ways, every single animal in the Wizarding World is so beautiful and after watching these movies you realize how right Hagrid was when believing that all animals were beautiful and unique… i loved animals before but after watching these i love them way more, it makes you more appreciative even if all these fantastic beasts don’t exists. i personally dont like Tina, i disagree on things she has done and how poorly she has supported Newt… but besides that i have no complaints with these movies and i think secrets of dumbledore is probably my favorite FB movie so far! i cant wait for the next one 💛🪄
    Recommendation: i hope you guys can watch this video where they explain how much of an amazing character Newt is as a protagonist… doesn’t matter if you react to it or watch it off camera ☺️ czcams.com/video/C4kuR1gyOeQ/video.html

    it's really overwhelming to notice that you are really into the movie, this movie review was by far the best one of your HP reviews. You got to absorb messages the some potterheads didin't get.
    I totally agree when you said about dumb vs Grinde tocix relationship.. for me this is the exact message that this plot wants to deliver.
    Also dumbledore leaving alone at the end got me chills.
    hope to see you reacting to the others when they finally come out.
    _________
    also I'd like to bring you some facts about the movie production you may not know.
    > this movie was originally going to be set in BRAZIL'S RIO DE JANEIRO AT 30s. but due to covid they had to change everything..... Jude law said that he would have dressed tipycal brazilian clothes such as straw hat. Also MinaLima (the prop designers had developed the oficial logo for CASTELOBRUXO - the brazilian school of witchcraft set in Amazonia)
    > Tina was supossed to be in this movie but she got pregnant during the quarantene (the nagini and queenie actress got pregnant as well), the baby caring and other problens during this dark times did not let her be in this sequence... but she was not CUT.
    > Originally in the books it is said that dumbledore ans grindelwald didn't meet each other for a long period since they're young... appearently they would've met only in the final duel... BUT David Yates talked to JK and they decided to have them having secrets meetings in this movie that no one would see.... I guess some potterheads thought this wasn't a good excuse and say this is a way to force something that is not canon in the HP story (just as AURELIUS, who was never mentioned in the hp book)
    that's all for now.
    hope to see you react to the next one when and IF they come out.
    hugs from BRASIL
