  • In this series of two videos we take a look at a KTM690 Duke with terrible running problems. KTM gave the owner a quote of £1000 to fix the issue, in reality it needed a part that cost £3.30!

    And this is why everyone everywhere should be well versed in the right to repair movement. Dealers and companies will extort you to the end of the earth if they are allowed to, we need clear regulations forcing companies to provide repair schematics and diagnostic tools.

      It's far worse than that. Some manufacturers in the mid 2000s started designing bikes to fail post warranty by the use of plastics with defined heat cycles and this is the business model for the company. See a certain Bavarian brand. This is not poor design, it's designed failure.

    KTM seem to be scammers. My mate let his super duke sit for 6 months, it wouldn't run right after. They quoted him 900 to sort it out telling him they'd have to strip the fuel system and refresh it. I drained the fuel, put fresh fuel in and ran some injector cleaner through it (red x if you're interested). Sorted it out for 25 quid including the fuel.

      The biggest problem in modern bikes is CAD design and how compact everything is packed. A spark plug change is now a 2-3 hour job. Valve spacing is now an engine out job.

    Nice video! Please keep them coming. I don't know if the fueling system on this bike and the RC390 are the same, but my 15' RC390 had a starting issue and would also run lean. It turned out that the fuel hose wasn't sealing correctly. Hence, the fuel pressure was incorrect, making it stall and backfire on the declaration. It was also intermittent because the hose would move around, have better sealing at one moment, and be squirting fuel back into the tank the next minute.

    • @razor1uk610
      @razor1uk610 Před 24 dny

      ...so it sounds like there were no fuel hose clamps/circlips fitted, or the hose is getting old and needs replacing with a generic fuel hose of correct inner diameter, cut to length, and with clamps/clips.

    Had almost that on a KTM 950 Adventure (carbs) in the summer. The idle would dip down every ten seconds. Sometimes the dip would cause it to stall, other times it would only just recover. It was a new NGK spark plug that caused it.
    With the bad plug it would ride alright at high revs, but was playing up at low revs.

    11k miles on a Duke 3, it's almost new. Your mic is lucky, I'd love to have a muff just laying around 😂 If you're not aware, instead of purchasing a higher pressure relief valve, you can modify the original. And, with the free play in the gears within the throttle body, if you release the tension on the two lower screws holding the stepper motor, you can eliminate all of the free play by gently using a screwdriver between the housing and the stepper motor mounting plate, apply a little pressure, check the play, and retighten.

    I have a Husqvarna SM610S that has a very bad miss. From the paperwork that came with it (it was imported to Thailand from Japan) the chassis # comes back as a 1998 or 1999 and it is absolutely impossible to find spares for this bike. Having a single 577cc engine miss all the time except for when you're really on it makes it exhausting to ride. You have to hang on for your dear life and starting slow turns out from a driveway or street you're always in danger of going down if it quits. It's been parked for two years but I have to give it another attempt, the bike is big and cool.
