  • I'm sure you know hiking is good for you, but do you know how good for you? Especially if you're over 55 years old.
Hiking is a great cardio workout, it can lower your risk for heart disease, and strengthen your glutes, quads, and other muscles in your body. But what may be of most interest to older adults is that hiking can stave off the effects of Alzheimer's disease and can even work to reduce or delay cognitive decline.
Here's how it works: When you're hiking, you're walking on an uneven surface, so with every step you take your mind is constantly processing and making dozens of decisions every second.
Your mind is engaged in ways you don't even fully understand. Do I step here or there? Do I shift my weight to the right or the left? I've got to watch out for that tree root or not step on that slippery rock.
You muscles and nerve-endings are constantly acting and responding to those decisions. That mental engagement is an important factor is an important factor in beating Alzheimer's. That mental activity doesn't happen when you're just walking on a flat surface like a sidewalk, in a mall, or around the house.
Hiking can also improve your blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Hiking can improve your balance. It can boost bone density, because hiking is a weight-baring exercise.
We love sharing the Alps with active, older adults who want to want to stay mentally sharp and healthy.
So get out there, and do something good for your body, mind, and spirit. We'd like to think that by hiking in the Alps, we can give you another few weeks of productive life.
That's why at Alpenwild, our motto is "adventure before dementia".
We'll see you on the trail!

Couldn't agree more. Somehow, priorities realign in the mountains.

I will turn 70 in about 2.5 months and I started hiking seriously about 5 months ago. I live in Thousand Oaks, California and it is absolutely a hiker’s paradise here: lots of well maintained - actually pristine - hiking trails, many of which are within walking distance from my house.
Also, hiking in the beautiful outdoors in the hills surrounding 1000 Oaks gives me a sense of well being. I moved here about 8 years ago from a suburb of Los Angeles and I’m so glad I did.
I have been a serious exerciser for almost 40 years and had been an avid recreational cyclist up until I switched to hiking. The benefits I have enjoyed from hiking are wonderful: I feel stronger, more mentally alert and the endorphin rush you get from a challenging hike feels wonderful.
I also use my Apple Watch Ultra on my hikes to monitor all sorts of things: distance, heart rate, calories burned, split pace, etc. The watch even charts your course so you can see on a map on the watch where you hiked. It will even help you backtrack to your starting point if you should get lost.
To my fellow senior citizens, I heartily recommend taking up hiking. The benefits are incredible!

Thanks for sharing your first-hand experience with us --- Great comments. I was born and raised in Ventura over 70 years ago so I know what you're talking about. You're surrounded by some great year-round hiking trails. I think at my age, hiking is a safer, more sustainable form of exercise than running or cycling. Keep it up.

I have hiked in that region, actually to the base of the Eiger from way below. The views and novelty add to the benefit of hiking.

I feel like a real dumba$$ now, thought I might be too old to start hiking at my age, I'm only 43...

You are definitely not too old to start hiking. I was a serious recreational cyclist for many years and I switched to hiking about 5 months ago. I am 69 years old.
My wife and I moved to Thousand Oaks, California from Los Angeles almost 8 years ago and it is a hiker’s paradise here so I figured I should take advantage of it. I have already noticed an improvement in my endurance and mental clarity which is plenty of motivation to keep up with my hiking schedule: I exercise 6 days a week (one of the many benefits of being retired!), alternating resistance training with hiking (lifting weights Sun, Tues and Thurs and hiking on Mon, Wed and Fri).
