    This week was Paula's 31st birthday! She hadn't been to the Oregon Coast before, so we took a trip out to Canon Beach to see Haystack Rock. Incredibly, we found a campground to stay at: Wrights to Camping. It's a small, privately owned campground, which is why it was open ahead of all the Oregon State Parks.
    The big news of the week is that Paula got her new road bike for 2020. It's an aloha green Project One Trek Emonda with Sram Axs, and Zipp 303's. The Domane was developed for the cobble stones at Paris-Roubaix, so it features wider tire clearance and a very comfortable ride on rough roads. So far, Paula loves it and isn't missing her speed concept one bit ;)

    You’re right in that he has everything he needs. He is whining due to separation anxiety and it is normal. My tip is to have him in the crate more while you move around the house generally every day. Sometimes you will be in the room, other times he won’t be able to see you. This hopefully will condition him to realise you haven’t abandoned him and will be back. Then you can leave the house for a short period and come back and he’ll begin to get used to it and will know you will come back. He needs to feel the crate is a safe space that he spends lots of time in when you are about, so he doesn’t associate going in the crate with you leaving. The crate and his bed becomes his safe space that he sits in even when you are home and he will actually like being in there.

    Regarding dog: They calm down eventually. It's a puppy thing :)

    Cover the crate with a blanket. The darkness helps stimulates them.
    One thing with crate training is to put them there periodically and ignore the howls. Flynn may calm down after a bit. I say this, but our current dog didn't take to crate training; he just opened the crate on his own, or howled till he was let out.
    If Flynn can't be crate trained, just try to area train him. Leave the crate without a door (wire it open if it can't be removed), and give him a room for his own, garage, livingroom, spare bedroom. Let him get used to his territory, and gradually increase his territory over time, and change up his territory from time to time. This way he can accept hotel rooms. You find that he will no longer be traumatized by his crate, and may accept it as his den.
    Hope this works, it worked for my more stubborn four legged friends

    Try a crate cover... makes more like a cave. We leave just the top and one see window open. Give a special treat every time they go in crate...freeze dried liver are awesome. Use the same command to get in it, "crate" and then we always say "go night night" to get a routine down.

    So my roommate works for animal services and some advice she gives is being repetitive. So not necessarily when you’re going on a workout, but put him in the crate and if possible wait for him to quiet. When he quiets then go in and give him a treat. Doesn’t help with all dogs, he may have separation anxiety, but it may work. Hope this helps!

    Always been a huge fan of Trek and I love that shade of blue you use Paula. We tried crate training our puppy but she hated it and we just let her roam around the house when we are gone. Lucy, the puppy, does great now and only chewed on a rug once. It has a funny memory now 😂

    Happy Birthday Paula!! Love the new bike you’ll have to let us know how you like it, I’ve been researching gravel bikes and would love to hear your guys take on it. Blanket over the crate seemed to work for us (beagle) but we also had the unfair advantage that she was crated as a pup. We leave the door open at all times to promote nap times there

  • @purplecrankpedalingforlife6804

    Had a GSP for 15 years, he hated the crate! We learned to leave him out of crate for short periods of time with his toys and dog bed! Left the TV on or music. Eventually stretching the time to longer times away from him. Good luck! We love seeing Flynn! Stay safe. ❤️

    Hey, about the dog barking. Apologies if you’ve done this already... we have a GSP and we did a bit of kind of “immersion therapy”. Basically they worry you’ve gone forever so if you leave the house and return by extending the time that really helps. So pop out for 5 mins and act like it’s no big deal- don’t diss when you leave or come back. As they do well Increase the time and frequency. Hope this helps! Awesome videos

    Great video as always and happy birthday. Tip for Flynn's barking when in the crate. When you go out maybe leave the radio or tv on for some background noise and give him a treat, like a chew which will keep him busy for a bit. My dog loves it when we go out just because she is excited to get a treat before she goes in her bed!!

    We have a new puppy, too! Ours is in the kennel overnight and when I wake up or come back from a trip where she’s in the kennel, I wait until she is totally calmed down before I let her out: laid down, head on paws kind of calmed down. She’s a hound dog and loves to howl. So, it has helped us get some sleep or if I go workout, she’s calm enough that my wife can sleep while I’m out. It takes a TON of patience to train her that way, though.

    1. Oregon coast is awesome - next time you go, hit up Cascade Head, and run up that! Epic, and hard. Good trails for the way down too.
    2. Try a Thunder shirt when you leave the house; doesn’t work for all dogs and all anxiety issues, but helps for some and it’s cheap enough to try.
    3. Paint work on Trek bikes is always fantastic; need to get one myself!

    Have a GSP, Walter and he does the same thing - we got a cheap bark collar off Amazon and its been magic. Put it on him when we leave and kennel him, it beeps if he barks loud enough (you can set sensitivity levels), if he barks again in less than 30 seconds it'll vibrate, and if he does it again in less than 30 seconds it will give him a little shock. It's the only thing that works for us when we leave and keeps the neighbors happy!

    For Flynn - definitely (separation) anxiety, like others have mentioned. When our pup was younger, we gave her calming treats made with hemp oil (even CBD), chamomile, lavender, etc. You can find these at any dog store (petco/petsmart, etc.). It helps to calm them down and they will fall asleep. Hope this helps!

    I’m so sorry but I had to laugh when yal were talking about the howling 😂😂😂 I have a GSP and he was a full on terror when he was a pup especially when we would leave and put him in the crate. Our neighbors would come over and tell us he would howl for hours! Eventually we tried using a muzzle but my heart couldn’t handle it so we didn’t stick with that method. We also tried the blanket trick. But he would just pull the blanket through the crate! We also had another dog so having a “buddy” didn’t help either. What worked for us was just sticking it out and being very strict about bed time and when we left the house saying “get in your home”. We let the neighbors know he was fine and it just took time. Not very ideal for yal cause you travel so much but I also worked at a dog daycare and taking him there helped tremendously! The key is just getting them tuckered out.... which is damn near impossible with GSPs. He’s 4 now and fully house trained, so he stays out during the day no problem and goes in his crate by himself at night to sleep. Oh! I would also do crate training throughout the day when I didn’t leave the house as well. So I would use treats, tell him to go in his home, reward with the treat and leave the door open, sometimes close it, reward with a treat. Basically just trying to make it a reward to go in the crate. It helped a lot with getting him to go into the crate. Lol it use to be a full out war to get him in it 😂 it didn’t help so much with the howling though. That just took time and consistency. Best of luck!

    • @ThatTriathlonLife
      @ThatTriathlonLife  Před 4 lety +3

      Thanks for the suggestion! If you have a favorite local potter, we'd love to do something like that. The mugs we're getting are made in Kentucky, which is step #1 with being in the US. The hats we're looking at are from an Oregon-based company, and the shirts will most likely be California. We're trying to get at least one hat model out of recycled material and a couple shirts that are organic cotton. Our mission is to work with companies that are first and foremost transparent and ethical, and hopefully as close to our homes as possible. And we're making moves to link into a charity so that a set percentage of all sales go directly to them. We'll be laying all this out in the coming weeks :)

    Like everyone says it’s separation anxiety. It’s also becoming normal to bark all day. One thing to try is not feed him before going out on bike rides. Instead put the food into rubber hose pipe and hide sections around the pen. He will spend hours searching and eating the food taking his mind off things.

  • @robertlauber9021
    @robertlauber9021 Před 4 lety +1

    You will need to add perceived value to the crate; give him all his meals and treats inside the crate exclusively while you're home with him. Include super high value treats like raw beef bones; find out what he REALLY likes and allow him to have it inside the locked crate. Give him plenty of time to clean up after himself and spend some time behind a locked door. Also, make certain the crate isn't too big for him; a dog's den should be large enough for them to stand and turn themselves around - an oversize den invites soiling. While it may seem counter-intuitive, dogs actually prefer a compact den. Furthermore, it is their safe place so ignore advice on letting the dog run loose in the house when you're gone; this will enhance the anxiety and the dog will self-regulate by destroying things and potentially harming themselves. Also, consider CBD oil as a tool for anxiety reduction; works well for car sickness also. Be his leader first, friend second. You got this! Awesome dog btw

    Canine tip: You gotta make that crate super inviting all the time, and not the spot to go to when you leave. Plan on ~100X's of practice before the pup gets "it". Every single time they goes in there, something good happens. Make crate-time a habit that occurs multiple times a day, every day. Have a "trigger" command prior to putting him in in the crate (e.g. "in you pen"), and then good things happen when they go in. Start off with short stints in the crate, gradually getting longer, and then alternate frequency duration, keep them guessing. But again, always good things happen in the crate.
    Personally if we are leaving for a long run/ride/swim we use a frozen kong filled with baby food when we leave the house. Like a slow licking ice cream, but you get the idea (i.e. good things). Use the crate at night as well if you can. Sorry to say, your were-parents now, gotta put in the time (repost from last week's vid comment): michaelellisschool.com/videos.htm Cheers, and keep rocking!

    He will grow out of it. He is part of your life, you are his life.....If you think of it that way it’s easier. Also get him play time with other puppies or playful dogs. It will give him things other than you and it will wear him out. Our puppy is 9 months old, has completely grown out of worrying when we leave.

    Do you close the gate to his pen as soon as he gets into it ? Its better to allow him time to relax then only when relaxed close the gate .. leave the tv on ?

    5 minute rule! Wait 5 minutes after crating before leaving the house. Don’t make a big deal about it when you get home, ignore him, wait 5 minutes, then let him out without saying anything. Ignore him until he calms down. 👍

    There are some anti bark collars. Not sure how you feel about those but they work. He is young and might be a chatter box but he might also grow out of it. Some dogs just like to talk though. Mine which is a Vizsla hates car rides always has and always will. We have tried every gimmick out there and she just is a puker within blocks of getting in the car. Sometimes you just have to except there limits as like people they have personalities. My vizsla is a snuggler and she is great at it.

    If you guys find a answer to how keep our dogs quiet in the crate while we go for a bike ride please lemme know!!! Going through the same!

    You should give Flynn an (swaety) shirt so he can "smell" you when you're not there. Normally they calm down when they smell some sweat ;)

    Have you ever set up a camera to see if he actually barks the whole time you're gone? I'm guessing he's only barking when you're nearby because he can still smell you. If he stops soon after you actually leave, then that's nothing to worry about too much, will probably grow out of it over time. One thing that can help is, at a time when he's sleepy/calm and you're just hanging around the house, put him in his crate for a little while and let him nap in there while you're still in the house.

    Have u tried a rubber toy with peanut butter or honey inside? An adaptil anxiety collar or diffuser? Or an anti bark collar?

    • @ThatTriathlonLife
      @ThatTriathlonLife  Před 4 lety

      Yeah, except for the collars. Hoping it doesn’t come to that

    • @MR-wh5wp

      @@ThatTriathlonLife the adaptil collars are good. They just let off a relaxing pheromone. The pheromone is similar to what the mother provides her puppies. So it will be good for your dog while it's still young.

      Oh and the dog thing? We have a Vizla - me, my wife and our two kids have been in lockdown and haven't left the house or him (he's 9 months old) alone since March - we haven't been able to. When we have to leave him and this lockdown eases, it's going to be hard work to reintroduce him to being on his own...

      Haha not me, but I do have one for special film projects and getting around campgrounds 👌 yeah that’s a good point. Forced full time engagement is going to be hard to let go of

    Here's a couple of crate training tips:
    1. Think of crate training like interval training. Train in short stints, with breaks, gradually lengthening the time of each stint in the crate. Even 5 seconds per stint at first is fine, as long as it is reinforcing the right behaviors. To be honest, and totally no judgment intended, leaving him alone for 3 hours may be too much, too soon. It takes time for a puppy to get used to being confident and alone by themselves for that long.
    2. Create positive assoiciations with crate, like treats and meals.
    3. Maybe leave a sweaty, stinky shirt from you or Eric to remind Flynn of your presence while you're gone.

    Good luck! Raising a puppy is both a joy and sooo much harder than anyone expects!

    Kong - fill it up with frozen peanut butter and toss in crate.X 2.. also crate him when at night when you sleep . Don't let him turn into a "velro" dog.
