His reasoning behind not using a design doc is that it's a waste of time because it "quickly becomes outdated and irrelevant" is pretty hilarious when you consider that it's his freaking job to keep it updated.

At it's most infuriating, Fallout 4's faults just feel even worse BECAUSE New Vegas exists. They didn't even need to really fight legal team shit to copypaste it in 4, it was giftwrapped due to franchising, but no, gotta stuff in a Skyrim-style perk system that wasn't needed and inferior to the old perk system, and a vocal protagonist which... honestly wasn't bad, but did NOT need to be restricted to only 4 vocal ques. That was dumb for a game touting the RPG genre. All those experimental things just because they could, and while some worked... others were crap.

Man, his speech is the quintessential whining "look how much work we did and it doesn't even matter because players don't care!", while willfully ignoring the fact that every other major RPG out there did 10x more work.
Yeah, it must've been a real nightmare to write 4 generic "Yes/No" responses to every statement. Not like Fallout 1 through NV and every single CRPG from 2 DECADES AGO didn't have 5+ regular responses plus potential responses based solely on what skills the player has (aka the vast majority of which would only be seen by a select few who played in specific ways).
Hell, one of my favourite games, Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines (which came out in 2004) has THE ENTIRE GAME rewritten if you play one specific clan. But do go on about how much work it was to write F4.

People forget his design decisions completely tainted Fallout 3 overall. Everything Emil is saying in his presentation is a direct continuation to what they would say during presentations of FO3 in 2008. Too many devs at Bethesda never truly understood FO1 and FO2 or never played them, and Bethesda's position of "we know what's best for our games" really hurts the final product.

Its Todd's ego that holds FO back. They stray away from its design intended to be more of a simulator RPG into just a generic FPS looter game to now just a forced Minecraft gimmick that service no relevance or purpose to the game beyond 'bragging rights' he says. All they had was the money. Obsidian made the better game and thus why they want FO to be in house now. They want to imprint onto it.

It really makes me sad. Tim Cain created Fallout as a passion project and fought to keep it alive when Interplay wanted to shut it down, because he wanted to make a new breed of RPG, one where your choices had real consequences at every turn and there were many ways to solve a problem. He adapted this approach from the tabletop role playing games he loved playing, where the adventurer leads the adventure, not the other way around. None of the people involved in Fallout 1's creation were professional writers, but the purity of their vision led them to create one of the greatest fictional settings ever gifted to the world of video games. They did it because they wanted to see if it could be done, because they were passionate about advancing the medium-- that's what "By Gamers, For Gamers" meant.
And on the other end of the spectrum, you have this guy, an overpaid "writer" in a game where many of the quests are randomly generated, your character's backstory is pre-determined, your character's motivation is told to you, and you aren't even given enough credit to understand the Institute's main motivation. Literally nothing could be more un-fallout. The series that I used to know is dead. In its place is this hollow frame, wearing the barely recognizable skin of the Fallout used to know and love. Some of the token pieces are there, but the core has been cleanly vivisected.

Now I know where the retarded Dragon Break shit came from. It was basically "everyone was there, saw completely different events AND are all right, IN THE SAME FUCKING TIMELINE." The reason for that was to artificially obfuscate the plot so that the first characters you meet magically could not expose the whole, laughably-shallow plot of some demigods fighting over some ultimately useless god artifacts. That was Morrowind. None of the ES games have any plot. Usually it is: "you prisoner, go solve everyone's problems and clean-sweep tons of nigh-identical dungeons."

As someone that is decent at coding I want to laugh at the "spaghetti" tree of his. Having the variation in how characters run in most decent games has more complex tree than this!
Fire your script writers. If they can't handle this they are clearly either inept or overworked. And if it is the latter. Then you are doing story/script writing wrong.

That means that their client population is shifting to adolescent idiots, who don't actually pay for games by themselves and are very ok with consuming junkfood (as in food, as in content).
Such player base will surely enjoy iMprOvEd gUnPlaY, iMpRovEd pErk sYstEm, broken lore, stolen mechanics from famous titles and that atrocious, fltlhy, insane Bethesda City's Shuffle of calling PC a faction's leader without providing any related narratives and mechanics at l. Such clients will be ok with any cashgrab shit Bethesda will make because Bethesda finally learned how to design and sell their drug tailored to their lack of taste. Emil, being a talentless fraud, is just an iceberg's tip. Bethesda doesn't need a coherent, professional story in their games anymore (not like they were ever good at is, lol). They only need to make their games unrefundable and to sell enough copies to make board and investors happy.
Remember that Shadow on the Vampire quote from Schreck? "I do not think we need . . . the writer . . ." Bethesda knows for a fact they don't need the writer! A solid professional will question too many things in their new "industry" process, making it harder to just extract revenues. It is better to pay a nice check to an impostor like Pagliarulo, who will be so happy for this hand-out he won't be against humiliating himself once in a while like in that retarded lecture.

Yep.... how can such a guy be in charge of the damn thing and writing process?
I mean... with the games of recent years, one has to look at that and ask: 'what are they doing right, what are they doing wrong?'
I usually GM/DM in RL for some friends of mine... and I HATE rail-roading my players, so I usually present them with several options to approach a problem, which often leads to me creating a lot of areas, items, NPCs and whatnot... however ultimately the players WILL decide for one path over the others. So natrually they do not get to see the other stuff and one could argue that I made those other paths and storylines for no reason.
But one should keep in mind: I can use some of that stuff for another group (if that makes sense) or I can build up on that stuff and so on.
In a Computer Game it's even easier, considering how many people are playing it independently and if you make all the choices meaningfull and no option outright retarded (and maybe even then), everybody will have a nice and nuanced, different experience.
I mean, I think the developers of CD Projekt Red said it themselves that they are well aware that quite a few gems hidden in the game, or some mini-quests and whatnot that are aside the main-road might be overlooked by a certain amount of players... but that doesnt mean you got to cut that content completely or force all the players down one straight road, now does it?

The dialogue systems from Mass Effect and especially telltale are built for linear stories, LINEAR STORIES, fallout is not a linear game, it is a sandbox with a story within it that you can but under circumstances need to follow. Finally, both Mass Effect and telltale games are stories with SET CHARACTERS. Fallout is based upon character creation both through visuals but also (and I would argue the main feature of the system) character developemt in which your character builds their own narrative and becomes their own person in the universe Fallout has provided.

      @GeteMachine Před 4 lety +8

I don't get why they think it should apply. FO isnt supposed to be linear. The story is supposed to be the sum of the game's explored missions, choices and experiences. You're supposed to put pieces together on where you are and what happened around you from the environment. It amazes me how Bethesda doesn't really understand what an RPG is let alone Fallout. They seemed to do environmental storytelling better in FO3 but despite the better designs of FO4, fail to do anything with it the same way.

This is so fucking dumb. FO4's story was pretty fucking standard Bethesda storytelling. The changes in the dialog system stripped away some of the illusion of choice you never fucking had to begin with but the presentation is not about that bullshit, it's about keeping the dialog trees simple INTERNALLY through standardization so that thousands of dialog encounters are easier for the dev team to manage.
Dumb fucks without any dev experience just expect magic to make their games but as technology improves exponentially, so does the effort required to exploit it. Therefore, in order to deliver a game on time, compromises need to be made to simplify development so that resources that are wasted managing shit that doesn't need management can be spent elsewhere.
What fucking reality are you people from where Bethesda was crafting amazing stories before they made these dialog changes? Bethesda has always written shitty stories, but no one was playing Bethesda games for the stories in the first place. Their stories have always served as a generic reason for the world to exist as it is, but the entire point of playing their games has always been the sandbox, and that's no different in FO4.

Skyrim was the first of theese games I played and not just did it satisfy me it made me hate theese games as well. They are so underwritten...
For example: During the main quest of Skyrim you break into an embassy. In there, if you look around off track, you find a document that proofs one of Skyrims leaders is, or at least has been working with the enemies of Skyrim. I kept that piece of paper with me throughout the whole game in hope at some point
    you know, ME
    the player
    the center of the game
can truely choose to make a difference
(like giving the truth out to the people of skyrim or use the information to blackmail the traitor)
No, nothing happened, no option ever. But the Information is in the game! Some writer set this up and someone must have come in and forced him to dumb it down.
Play one side quest of Witcher 3 and you immediatly feel how much better the writing in those game is...

And by the way, that guy was captured and tortured by the Thalmor, and if he becomes high king in the game it becomes very apparent that he plans to fight the Thalmor after the civil war.
Anyway... I do agree that it's bullshit that you can't even DO ANYTHING with that information.

@@spikem5950 Ulfric proved "uncooperative to direct contact" only, and that was only after the Markarth Incident, when he began to get too big for his breeches. He doesn't want to be contacted directly, but apparently is accepting of indirect contact. Gee, I wonder why that would be? It wouldn't be his agenda and his desire to keep up his public appearance, would it? After all, his anti-Empire-that-caves-to-its-elven-overlords rhetoric is precisely what draws the Stormcloak sympathizers to him. If he's found out to be colluding with the Thalmor in any way, his message will fall on deaf ears and his support will be lost. And why? Because people will see him for what he truly is: A bully who wants more power. Here's the pertinent quote from the dossier:
_"After the war, contact was established and he has proven his worth as an asset. The so-called Markarth Incident was particularly valuable from the point of view of our strategic goals in Skyrim, although it resulted in Ulfric becoming generally uncooperative to direct contact."_
Notice, they contacted him and he proved his worth. How? Because his reclaiming the Reach for Skyrim and allowing free Talos worship gave the Aldmeri Dominion all they needed to gain a foothold in Skyrim, which had been left alone before that. Now the Thalmor are a threat to Cyrodiil from the south _and the north._
What's even more disturbing is how the dossier ends: "A Stormcloak victory is also to be avoided, however, so even indirect aid to the Stormcloaks must be carefully managed."
The Thalmor are aiding the Stormcloaks! Little enough to escape the notice of those not in the know, but aid nonetheless. But not because they want the Stormcloaks to win, but so that they can keep the Empire embroiled in war, getting them off the Aldmeri Dominion's back and allowing the Thalmor breathing room to recuperate and get ready to deal the killing blow to the weakening Empire. An Empire that is weakening and kept from recuperating thanks to Ulfric and the Stormcloaks. And mind you, should the Stormcloaks defeat the Empire and gain Skyrim's independence, it will be as short-lived as Madanach's Kingdom of the Reach (if not shorter). Again, "A Stormcloak victory is also to be avoided."

If the writing and the dialogue system sucks a voiced or silent protagonist won't save the game. What's more is that voiced protagonists haven't hurt games like Mass Effect or The Witcher. This isn't to say that they don't have problems in their storylines, but overall, the story telling in them remains engaging throughout. In any event, I've been saying for years that Bethesda should hire real writers to do their storytelling. They honestly haven't told any good stories since Oblivion in my opinion, and now (because of this video) I know why the Dark Brotherhood storyline in Skyrim sucked ass.

      You mean William Shen?
Here's the thing: *William Shen was the lead designer for Far Harbor.* Yes, that Far Harbor. The one that spontaneously seemed sooooooooo much better than everything else in FO4, story-wise.
If William Shen jumped ship and left Bethesda, to me, there's only two possibilities:
      1) William Shen had increased responsibilities at Bethesda for Starfield, was disappointed with the outcome and his own performance and quit "in shame."
      2) William Shen was frustrated with the leadership at Bethesda and the end product Starfield became, and left as a result.
We don't know for sure, of course, but the latter seems WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more likely. Why would Emil be as defensive on twitter as he is now if he wasn't in a lead role, for example?
And if Will Shen really jumped ship because he felt frustrated and wasn't getting further, then this is just another bit of evidence that the work atmosphere at Bethesda might be a toxic one with a bunch of sycophants sucking up to "the old guard," namely, people like Emil and Todd.

Also Will isn't the only one leaving, the legend Kurt Kuhlmann was kindly "Asked to leave" (basically fired) from Bethesda after decades and then there was also another long time dev Bruce Nesmith who left a year prior to Starfield release.
Something is horribly wrong with the leadership in Bethesda, Todd is no longer a developer and more of a CEO type role now. Emil Pagliarulo now has full reigns of the studio completely for himself.

    • @Longknife
      @Longknife Před 7 měsíci +1

@@Vert_GreenHeart Exactly, I just dug this up myself after reading your comment, and I had the exact same conclusion.
The entire scenario screams - and of course this is still speculation, to be fair - that:
      1) Talented workers like Will Shen and Kurt Kuhlmann were frustrated with SOMETHING about how Starfield was handled, which we'll call creative differences.
      2) They likely had contractual obligations keeping them staffed until the completion of Starfield.
      3) Starfield releases, both of them bail the moment they can. That Starfield was a trainwreck could've very well been something they tried to warn against and attempted to fix, but were ignored. That's just speculation though and spitballing a scenario that might cause one to become frustrated with their job.
      4) Meanwhile, Emil is particularly loud and defensive about Starfield. This implies that the blame lies more with Emil. If we imagine for example that Will enjoyed newfound responsibilities and called all the shots for the story, Emil has far less motivation to be defensive. It wouldn't be his story being attacked, but rather that of his co-worker. Emil acts as though he feels attacked, and when we ask ourselves why, it's probably because a good portion of Starfield's failures - at least in terms of writing - lie with him.
It's incredibly hard to imagine that *something* did not frustrate Bethesda's talents like Kuhlmann and Shen and drive them to leave the studio, and we have some of the potential problem children staring us right in the face.
Whatever the exact story is behind it, the point is that it would be an incredibly tall ask to expect the public to see not one, but *two* talented veteran workers jump ship *the moment* their obligations are fulfilled. This is not something people do "on a whim," this is something they do when they're frustrated with something and want out, usually out of a belief things won't change.
To me this is all strong evidence that Bethesda is being mismanaged.

He got all defensive when people asked him if kid in the fridge is canon and started a twitter firestorm when his defense was "its just a game" coupled with a poor attempt at a joke from Pete Hines that also got Pete crucified in the court of public opinion in the process.
Its probably the same reason Emil doesn't ask for help from Mark Nelson, or any of Bethesda's original writers. Basically, I don't think Emil cares enough for the story itself to bring in outside help. After all, in a cynical developer's view a story is just a window dressing for gameplay.

    • @Longknife
      @Longknife Před 6 lety +43

I'm the guy that wrote the reddit post and I think I may have touched on this in the comments:
The Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion exhibits good *quest design,* not writing. The best writing in Oblivion was the Thieves Guild, the Dark Brotherhood had the most fun quests. The actual writing and storytelling of the Dark Brotherhood was pretty bland and basic, but it was still crazy popular because it's quests had the best rewards and the most options. It may be that Emil is a rather competent quest designer, but he's a terrible writer that's written a buttload of plot holes ever since FO3 and especially beginning with Skyrim. (entire Dawnguard plotline makes no sense, Skyrim Thieves Guild makes no sense, FO4 has some terrible plotlines and quests that make no sense, etc etc)
It seems Bethesda sadly failed to recognize the difference between the two and thus chose to promote Emil. That or, as others have claimed, Bethesda does not distinguish it's quest designers from it's writers at all, and the two are treated as one and the same. This meant Emil got promoted off his quest design alone while whoever wrote the Thieves Guild (sad I have no clue who wrote it to this day) was simply forgotten and neglected since the quest design portion of the Thieves Guild was nothing spectacular.
My big question here is why these multimillion dollar companies continue to view writers as *optional.* Witcher 3 was based on novels written and look at it. It was a resounding success. New Vegas had an established writer on staff (several infact) and it's now regarded as a masterpiece. Despite this, companies like Bethesda continue to skip over hiring writers and leave us with idiots like Emil.

SUPERUNICORN pronouncing a name right usually is a symbol of respect, so why should we respect him?

SUPERUNICORN Thank you. I have no idea how the hell this guy could possibly read "Emil" as "Elm" if he took the time to write and edit a 25 minute video about firing him. Foolish and careless.

I am a mod author for fallout 4 and the adherence the four choices is annoying. There were times when I had to set filler responses that loop to the original four choices or... either way its a pain. I don't doubt that at least one of his staffers would have put hands on that dude if they had the chance.

The part I don't get it is why can't you show players just one, two or three options? Why does it have to be ALWAYS four? I don't see what you can gain from a setup like that.

Honestly Fallout 4 wasn't a bad game but its the worst Fallout game especially since the story was shit and ***SPOILER WARNING*** closer you got to the institute the more predictable the story became. If this guy wrote most of the story for Fallout 4 I'm hoping he leaves the company or gets fired soon...hes obviously a shit writer.

Game ratings are subjective and you can't rate somethibg with numbers something to make a point.
Like if we go with how 5.5 is seen usually, it mean *utter shit* so it contradicts your first sentence.

The fuzzy math that devs often use for how many "Endings" their game have is to take all possible combinations as "possible endings". An example of this is you have 5 locals each with 2 outcomes so at the end you get a clip depending on which you picked at each spot. That is 5x2 = 10 possible ending clips you could see at the end. Yet they say you can combine those endings in 2^5 combinations, thus they claim they have 32 different endings. Which sounds a lot better and gives people the impression there is a lot move variety in possible outcomes then there actually is.
The problem with this approach is It also grows exponentially, say you add two follower character story recaps as end credit scenes each with 3 possible outcomes. One you never meet so nothing, two you meet and things end well for them, or three you meet and things go bad for them. In the Dev Fuzzy math this now takes those 32 endings to 2^5*3^2 = 288 possible endings. Get a game with half a dozen characters and locations each with just a wall sprite at the end with the outcome like they did on old fashion RPGs and suddenly you have thousands of endings.
It's pretty much a joke and I can't help but face palm when I hear a dev try to upsell their game by listing how many endings it has because to anyone in the know, that numbers means nothing.

      Fallout 3 Endings:
      1. You die (unless you bought Broken Steel)
      2. Sarah dies
      3. Everyone dies
      4. You tell your radiation-immune follower turn the purifier on, and the game proceeds to shit on you for being logical.
