      +NTDang my policy is to use phones I review as a daily driver for a couple weeks before writing/filming. I don't feel like my "experiential" impressions compete directly with what other phone reviewers do and since this isn't really a phone-centric channel I don't feel the need to rush out to be the first one to do an "unboxing" or "impressions" video. There are already a dozen guys out there who do that better than I would.

      Not quite, they still need to catch up in the speaker department. Taking a leaf out of HTC's book would be a good idea for Samsung. As it is, it's hard to choose between the pro's and cons of this and the HTC 10. I'll likely go for the better sounding 10 although the water and dust proofing on the Galaxy would be very nice.

      +Terraapples They'll do it again with the S8, it looks like they specifically market the even number models (at least since the S4) to people who just buy the latest one every year. Then for most people who generally only buy every second year anyway, the odd number models focus on useful features and real usability.

    • @Pknuckles1804
      @Pknuckles1804 Před 6 lety +1

      brendano221 There's truth to this.
      My first smartphone was an S3. Had it for awhile and it started slowing down so I upgraded to an S5. Had that one for two years and my mother-in-law needed a phone so I upgraded to the S7 Edge.
      The even numbered phones just weren't a huge change. I couldn't be happier with the S7 Edge even over a year later. I see no reason to upgrade.

  • @metalfuelandfire
    @metalfuelandfire Před 8 lety +4

    Linus you definitely should have done the S7 edge instead because it's NOT actually any harder to hold than the S7. The edge had a 5.5" screen vs 5.1" but it's only 3mm wider and the edge on both sides actually makes it EASIER to reach because it fits the inside curve of the thumb and opposite side fingers, giving you those 3mm back. Also it has even better battery life because of the much bigger battery and same resolution. Also, the edge screen is waaay more feature rich for access from the lock screen. All other specs are the same and the only downside is that both edges make it even easier to press the tactile bottom buttons when holding the screen from the bottom.

    This phone with HTC's boomsound speakers would be pretty much perfect. As it is, the sound alone is enough to make me swing for the HTC 10. Why Samsung aren't taking forward facing, good sounding speakers seriously boggles the mind.

Great review, agree with all of it, though what i would like to see is what linus said with the fingerprint scanner on the lock button, on screen buttons instead of the current and then use that space for dual front facing speakers.

  • @LazerLord10
    @LazerLord10 Před 8 lety +3

    As someone who bought the G4, I really enjoy the manual mode in still image mode, but there are ABSOLUTELY no manual controls for video mode! What the heck is that all about? I can't even change exposure offset, which is VERY important to not getting completely washed out video when there is a bright subject. Heck, my 5 year old Droid Razr could do that!
    Yes, I know that I could use cinema FV5 or other 3rd party cameras, but they just don't work nearly as well as the built-in camera. If I want to take a quick video, but everything is over-exposed, it takes too long to open a 3rd party app that may not even work. (Cinema FV5 barely runs, and it only records 1/3 of the time I push the record button)

    I've just switched from S4 to S7. I'm not surprises because I know what this beast can do. Even if Samsung did has some gimmick features in its predecessors (Like the S4 that I've used for 3 years) or made a wrong decision some times. but it means that they always try out for something new for the phone. That is what the "True Innovation" supposed to be defined. Not only just put a music player and a telephone together then called it smartphone and become a god.

The only reason i'm considering a new one is because of the repair costs to keep an obsolete phone viable instead of getting a flagship killer. Great review Linus glad i took your advice back then.

    This phone is a work of art. I picked one up a few days ago, the edge version. Absolutely the best phone I've ever used. The whole thing is covered in gorilla glass 4 with a polished mirrored high grade aluminum. GG4 is harder than most metals, only exception being minerals like quartz that can scratch it. You won't need a case for this one, as long as you keep rocks out of your pocket and don't drop it, it will stay immaculate even from microscratches. I love the themes and customization offered by TouchWiz. The only caveat of this phone are the speakers and the non removable battery ( which is understandable given the design) best phone ever as of April 2016

    if any of you are still watching in 2018, here's a few points about the s7 that i still have.
    1. The battery life deteriorates after a little while, and i find myself having to charge it about 3/4 of the way through the day after medium usage.
    2. there is screen burn in. And quite a bit of it.
    3. micro usb is garbage, and they really should have just gone with USB C.
    4. Build quality is ok, after heavy usage for the past year and a half, the Micro USB port has gotten to the point where only one broken charger (not even the fast charger that came with it) works in the phone.
    5. at this point, it's just a guinea pig phone. Like seriously, it just updated to Android 8.0 oreo like 2 months ago.
    6. this is more about the update to Oreo. It's very glitchy. icon frames defaulted to on, and turning them off doesn't actually turn them off. That's just one of the many things that don't work when i try to change them in the settings to what i want.
    There's probably a few more things about it i particularly don't like, but i can't think of them right now. So, if for some reason, you were thinking of buying the s7 or s7 edge, don't. Just go with the s9 or wait a little bit and upgrade to the s10

    I have a Samsung S5 and I don't plan on upgrading any time soon. Do you know what is my "next target" smartphone? It is the *Samsung Flexible OLED Display Phone* that they have shown years ago where, the phone looks like a *Flash Drive* and with a press of a button, the screen pops-up from the phone itself in a horizontal position. THAT is my dream smartphone.

    • @TheInfinityMaster1
      @TheInfinityMaster1 Před 8 lety

      ***** In what ways do you mean "lag"? If you mean in terms of "scrolling" through the apps, no, it scrolls just fine. If you mean when opening/using apps like say CZcams, Internet, etc, no, it works fine. If you mean games, well, I personally don't like gaming on mobile in general, though, I recently downloaded Digimon Linkz just because I am a Digimon fan and I must say, the game DOES lag in few parts (outside battling) and it crashes plenty of times too. Though, I don't know if it is because of the phone itself or because of game bugs.
      I was very happy with my S5 even when I had the original "Kitkat" OS on it (in fact, I regret upgrading to "Lollipop" because I don't like the white settings layout at all and prefer the original dark layout of the "Kitkat" OS instead).

      Nevertheless, my only grip with Lollipop is the layout color for the settings. If only they gave you the option to change it to whichever color you want, I would've been totally fine with it. (Screw you, Google! - _ -)

I only wish for "rooting" to change stuff like "region lock" which annoyingly prevents me from installing certain Apps available to the rest of the world and a few other "customizable" stuff. But overall, not worth it and I'm not experienced enough to do it or be able to handle any "problems/malfunctions" if things go wrong, so no, rooting is not for me.

      I'd very much like to believe you... but I know most of the people who actually have such phones, do in fact have tablets, laptops or even regular desktop PCs. So your reasoning only applies to very few people. With your idea though, it just means even less reason for people to buy these phones since folks have more powerful hardware already.
      Since you mentioned Photoshop, I actually looked up the app. It's a single relatively new app from 2013, and it looks like a regular photo editor. I really don't see how such an app requires the best hardware.
      The funny thing is, folks often claim they buy a pricey phone for X reason and then they rarely use it for that purpose. I know folks with Galasy S6E and iPhone 6S who don't use their phone for much besides the regular uses of phone calls, browsing the web, CZcams and a few apps. One can do that stuff with reasonable pace on even the cheapest models these days, let alone the flagships of previous years. Smartphones remind me of how wasteful and vain human beings can be these days.

      @@wajinshu It's all about getting the right phone for you. If you care about customization but you still want great battery life and long software updates, maybe consider a Galaxy S21/S21+ or wait for the Oneplus 9 / 9 Pro. Phones have gotten a lot better in the battery life department since 2018. But Apple is still the leader when it comes to polish and long software updates imo, even if you lose some customizability along the way. I use a jailbroken iPhone 11 Pro Max and I absolutely love it. The camera is great, the performance and fluidity is great (even if it closes apps in the background a little bit more often than I'd like) and the battery life is superb. So my recommendations today would be: Oneplus 8T, Oneplus 8 Pro, Galaxy S21, iPhone 11 Pro / Pro Max (the Pro Max is a pretty heavy phone but if you don't mind the weight and you like big phones I recommend it), iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro Max

    I prefer capacitive buttons over onscreen ones for two reasons.
    1. I hate chasing buttons in my phone! With capacitive buttons, I *alwasy* know where they are. With on screen buttons, they're never in the same place creating much frustration.
    2.They take screen realestate. I don't like losing screen space for buttons, and autohide creates more stress.
    With all this said, the only thing stopping me from buying a Galaxy S7 is the sealed battery. If it dies, I can't swap it out cheaply like I can with my LG G3 and Galaxy S5.
    Having a sealed battery is just too risky for me.

    About some of the criticisms, I prefer hardware buttons, and as for the fingerprint sensor: while it would be nice to be on the power button, 1) usually I turn on my phone by pressing the home button so it's not like "click" then put my thumb down and 2) it'd be much less surface area if it were on the power button, meaning it's potentially less accurate and could potentially ring up a false positive

      ***** I switched out the battery a year ago. That's why I love it so much, you can replace lots of things pretty easy with this old phone. I'm not saying it's fast though, sometimes it takes a second or two to load up, but I can live with that.
