@@straightreject2947 Incorrect. NATO was a direct result of WW2. However, it did evolve thru'out the cold war in response to RU and other threats. The US created the Marshall Plan to help rebuild Europe to stabilize the economy and social/political enemies like the neo-Nazism movement post war. Ruzzia was trying to destabilize Europe in order to be "their savior" and to push the merits of communism. If you want(ed) to side with Russia you could have then and can still now. However, the US didn't want to run Europe but be partners. NATO was a way to help ensure that everyone that wanted to have a free society could do so without threat.
The US has not threatened Europe with war...Russia has.
Once the cold war started to gain footing, things got a bit messier, and Europe was perceived as a direct to threat to russia and even a pawn used buy ru to further the cold war.
When did the cold war stop? When russia stopped being an 💩🤡
But here we are again. POOPler using Europe as a scapegoat for escalation.
The US has arguably done more for peace in Europe than any other nation...ever.

The CEO of RheinMetall makes a very good point and a very realistic one, Washington has failed Ukraine in their time of need despite the security guarantee that was signed in the Budapest Memorandum. America hasn't failed Ukraine because it's not our responsibility. Americans pay taxes and have next to no social safety nets. We instead fund war everywhere else making it more affordable for those citizens in other countries. I have no desire to see Russia win against Ukraine but this isn't "free money". We are footing the bill and we have sent a hell of a lot of money already. Why do we have to spend more of our budget on war than the rest of NATO exactly? Most of the members of NATO aren't even spending 2% of their effing budget on defense. Why exactly do my children have to pay for it? I've looked at the numbers. I resent hearing Washington failed Ukraine.

RE: that insulation factory - I spent a bit of time between a couple of my TV jobs working for a buddy's brother's company installing computer LANs in factories in the late 1980s. One jobsite was in a wiring factory. There are so many caustic materials and weird plastics involved in insulating wire that there was a constant stink of molten plastic through the place. So bad that when the job was finished, I threw out all the clothes I wore on the site (I could still smell it). The USA still owns war they are responsible for half of all war exports. Germany and the UK are about 3% each. We have a long way to go before being close to self sufficient. All of our European weapon systems have American parts in them. We really just need larger armed forces not companies. I'd rather use US made equipment than homegrown anyway as we cannot compete. Their fighter jets are a perfect example of just how far ahead of the rest of the planet they are. F-22s blow Typhoons out of the water in almost every aspect that matters. Their stealth capability alone makes them better than any other aircraft other than f-35s.

It was young American men and American tanks that protected Europe from the Soviets for decades while you perfected your welfare states.

@@robgrey6183 No argument about Americans protecting Europe against the Soviets, although America has benefited considerably from the resulting global prosperity, so it's not without a return on its investment. Regarding the welfare states though, the cost of a welfare state is less than the cost of paying for welfare via insurance. Americans pay more per capita and get worse treatment. You should take it up with your representatives.

The developement ( or redevelopement) of military industry in Europe suits very well Rheinmetall interests, isn't it ? Obviously, I am saying that this kind of logic/declaration can have a "truth base" or is just a political lead...that leads to financial interests :). The fact in itself is true, Europe neglected for much too long the military industry...and, in general, any "virile" tendencies..). The US has a duty to the defence treaties it is part of. They are honour bound to come to the defence of its allies. Ukraine is sadly a different matter as it is not part of NATO. I do not believe the US would betray Europe, as it is a trustworthy country that honours its commitments. Therefore, the CEO is talking nonsense. However, that doesn’t mean Europe should completely rely on the US. Obviously, all European countries should prepare for war.
