I’m super excited to be joined by Sally K. Norton, author of “Toxic Superfoods,” about the impact of oxalates on the body. Sally holds a nutrition degree from Cornell University and a master’s degree in Public Health. Her path to becoming a leading expert on dietary oxalate includes a prior career working at major medical schools in medical education and public health research. Her personal healing experience inspired years of research that led to her book, Toxic Superfoods, which was released in January 2023 from Rodale Press and is available everywhere books are sold. As a leading expert on oxalates in food, Sally’s work has been featured by podcasters, radio shows, and several online and print journals.
In this conversation, Sally and I delve into the prevalence of oxalate crystals in the thyroid gland, the connection between oxalates and health issues such as kidney stones, tips for reducing oxalates in the diet, the challenges of restrictive diets, and more. Enjoy the episode!

Thank you! I passed a kidney stone 2 months ago and I had been consuming high oxalate foods. I bought Sally's book and now I'm eating low oxalates. Hopefully my Hasimotos will improve.

Just finished listening. I never thought I’d be so excited to get to the bottom of my ER visit ! Mystery solved . I just ordered her book . I’m so grateful for this podcast and finally some answers. Three days ago I ordered Camu powder. I’ll ween off of it as I started my first 1 gram full dose yesterday. I knew the pain I had for four years was crystals under my skin. I thought it was calcium deposits causing bone spurs and arthritis etc. I recently developed hip pain ( especially at night ) around the same time that I unknowingly upped my oxalates while trying to lower LDL. I’m wondering if oxalates also contribute to mild bladder and rectal prolapse since she mentioned epithelial walls. I’ll have to look into the calcium citrate, but I will begin her audiobook first. Alas there may be an end to my experiments! And maybe my nodules will shrink too. Along with fibroids and cysts . I’m also wondering if this is why my teenage son developed blood in his urine . Rare for boys the doctors said his kidneys were fine. He has many of my symptoms and genetics it seems. It’s been difficult to get him to reduce sugar , cheese, processed foods, breads, and lean meat only (with bread crumbs!) at least I don’t have to worry about the lack of green in his diet anymore 😅. He is extremely thin and has all the symptoms and habits I had at his age.
I feel like this is a new beginning for me . There was so much pain and so many symptoms this year especially. I have some answers now. Thank you
Pa for a thyroid, it’s my understanding that flax seeds should be toasted to remove phytic acid?

This doctor seems to be slightly dismissive to oxalate problems.
People can search for other videos with Sally which have large amounts of comments from people who have greatly benefited from learning about and reducing their oxalate intake.
      Read those comments.
It’s pretty impressive seeing the changes in people’s health due to their learning about oxalates.

my comment 7 months ago. I weened off oxalates since then and I’m grateful to be introduced to Sally . I have zero joint pain now. I think Omega 3 2 grams, no oxalates, and yoga worked for me. The key to everything IMO is reducing/fighting all inflammation. Sugar, gluten, and oxalates are highly inflammatory for me. I’m not a carnivore proponent ( I think fruits and vegetables are important) , but there are zero to low oxalate options and it’s worth trying for anyone with inflammation sensitivity. That ER visit was frightening and the worst pain of my life. I ate eggs that morning and have no if the eggs had anything to do with it , but now only order organic grain free eggs from a farm . I wouldn’t have been educated if Sally wasn’t invited to this podcast. Liver, kidney, and gallbladder health are priorities for me now. The medical community has made no effort to research oxalates , people can only share their experiences at this point. I was eating 2 cups or organic spinach a day and consuming high oxalte veg because they are tend to be the highest in nutrients and antioxidants. But I’m certain the high oxalate component is counter productive for graves disease ( inflammatory disease) and insulin resistance (pre diabetes and diabetes). I believe it put me over the edge and metabolic disease is rarely just one thing IMO. Cauliflower and micro-greens are a good substitution in my experience.

Speaking of celery, my grandmother would not roll her eyes. There's a Greek dish that in English I call Celery Stew. It's made up of about 3 bunches of celery cleaned and cut into pieces, lamb. At the end you beat 2 eggs in a blender, add lemon juice, then gradually add the hot broth from the cooked celery and lamb while blender is stirring. That gets stirred into the pot and removed so the egg doesn't curdle. It's one of my favorite meals. I only make it maybe once a year or so due to how long it takes to clean up the celery. Guess I will stop.

NaturalThyroidDoctor: I was shocked that you didn’t know if you would give up your smoothies. Shocked! If you wait until your have serious trouble, you are not wise. And you will have serious trouble. Did you not get it that these changes comprising old age are oxalate symptoms? Oxalates use the same pathway to leave as sulphur uses to circulate in the body and knocks the sulfur off. Sulfur deficiencies cause high serotonin/depression and high dopamine/irritability and intense anger, angry disposition, can’t produce glutathione (our major antioxidant) without sufficient sulfur, messes up hormones. High oxalates: fibromyalgia, cancer, heart problems, osteoporosis, chronic fatigue, incontinence, eye problems, liver problems, allergies, digestive problems, old age problems (which I am 80 and don’t have.) and on and on. And you have been blessed to find all this out. And you don’t want to give up your smoothies???? This unbelievable. I wouldn’t say that, if I were you, on another video. People might question your ability to reason instead of your self discipline or whatever your problem is. The best to you. Better late than never.

I definitely have reduced my consumption of high oxalate foods, as I add lower oxalate leafy greens to my smoothies (red and green leaf lettuce, arugula, collard greens), I add more lower oxalate berries (wild blueberries, cranberries), etc. And in my new book "The Hyperthyroid Healing Diet" I dedicated an entire chapter to oxalates. So I'm not completely dismissing what Sally discussed on the podcast and in her book, but I don't think we need to be as extreme as she suggests and essentially follow a carnivore diet. So while I find the subject of oxalates fascinating and might be even more strict in the future, as of now I can't say that I never have smoothies, dark chocolate, etc.

Thank you for your reply. In time more knowledge will be available for people to learn. I believe this diet, I know it is, will become more and more predominant. The reason is that so many of us, I know many, have had incredibly good life changes for health when nothing else has helped. This severe diet is for people who already have serious health problems. To use a milder version with improvement in food choices is a good way to begin. Again, thank you for your well thought out words.

Boiled broccoli in a smoothie sounds absolutely revolting. Broccoli is a completely man made food and it isnt natural at all. We shouldnt even be eating it. So happy i went carnivore a year and a half ago. I took me zero effort to give up vegetables.

  • @sstetson2750
    @sstetson2750 Před 10 měsíci +1

Wow! As I listen, she seems to only not exclude the carnivore diet. Perhaps the problem is actually our agricultural practices. The other point I would raise is that we have not relied on God's word, bearing in mind that food processing changes what is natural. Genesis 1:29-30 we read:
29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground-everything that has the breath of life in it-I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.

Just 8 chapters later, God makes a new covenant with Noah
      Genesis 9:1-4 KJV
1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.
2 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.
3 Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.
4 But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
