    Wow, what an amazing start to your Indonesia series. Nice ferry ride and yeah, you can always use your Bahasa Melayu skill there. Both the languages are quite similar. Wonderful to see you interacting with the locals there...very friendly and warm indeed. How easy it's to go around with a bike taxi and that pakcik (uncle) is so helpful to offer his hand, showing you the ferry office, Kampung Bule and trying bakso, lndonesia's signature dish. Well, exploring local cuisine/food/drinks is always essential to any travel experience. Love this great episode with interesting content. Thank you very much for sharing. I think what she meant unlimited data plan is because you can still use it after 32gb but the speed will drop/slower because of fair usage, not exactly unlimited.

The Malay & Indonesia language is mutually intelligible .. Pretty sure ,you can make good use of your Bahasa Melayu there. Still hope you have a good time....Looking forward , take care out there...Cheers mate!

  • @woosaa91
    @woosaa91 Před 10 měsíci +4

    expect higher prices than normal at ferry/airport terminals. Taxi mafia controls these high traffic places, walk out alittle more outside. But if they catch the grab driver, they might beat up the driver or trash the vehicle. Do be careful if the locals start asking too many specific questions or offer to help with services, may be a nice gesture but need to be wary.

    Ride hailing (Grab, Gojek, Uber, etc.) isn't illegal in Indonesia, but it's not something which traditional taxi drivers are very fond of - mainly due to such apps "fishing" away the potential customers from them. Which kind of explains why you had the conversation at the taxi counter.
    I feel that it's best you steer clear of the whole "but XYZ is cheaper than your taxi" argument (especially when speaking to taxi drivers and/or their associates), so as not to cause any unwanted misunderstandings or trouble (things can - and will - get pretty ugly real fast!).
    But please don't let that deter you from exploring the country, as its people are warm, accommodating, and friendly! It also has rich history and culture, and really great food as well!
    Hope you have an enjoyable time in Batam and the rest of Indonesia!

      Agreement or not, monopolizing the first stop point at a point of entry is a sure way to destroy the tourism sector of any city.
      Used to frequent Batam often. No more these days. Nonsensical ticket prices (2x the price for stulang - batam for half the distance). I am just one of many.

    I am not sure but in many countries, unlimited could mean that you get xGb @ full speed and then after you exceed the xGb (in this case 32Gb), it will throttle to like 128kbps or something. Not only in Indonesia but some countries are like that. So it is unlimited 🙂. With 128kbps, you can still WA,etc. Just a tip, it is always easier to get a phone with e-sim support and just buy one when u head to any country. Esims are very cheap and can be purchased online.

      One more. In indonesia, foreign phones can't use Indonesia SIM card because had to register imei first right? Lol I had to paid to beacukai 3 million rp. But I won't. I just use local services to hack imei. Back then I just can use Indonesian SIM card right away. But now, it's system is b4d. Like it wants money so much. I hope it change its system. Like If you go to other countries, you don't need to hack or buy new phone, straight away can use other countries SIM card. I know it's happening because many phones import from outside to Indonesia or clone phones too right? But the government should be more clever. Like easier tourist to travel. Hope Indonesian government in future will look more at this. Not always taxing at people lol.

    Taxi companies will always not favour Grab or other ride hailing platforms because it disrupts their "business", it’s good they exist so that tourists know the true prices of what a typical ride would cost.
