  • It's New Zealand's cheapest brand new electric car, but is it any good? In this cheeky review, Gavin Shoebridge looks at the car's features, balances the pros & cons, and reveals a dark secret that ruins his impartiality.
With petrol almost touching $3 a litre, now's a good time to look at going electric, so head on over to the EV Buyers' Guide to find a vehicle in your price range or with your desired range: buyersguide.ecotricity.nz/
And if you're keen on minimising your footprint on our planet's delicate ecosystem by driving guilt-free, why not switch to using 100% renewable electricity? With Ecotricity you can do that right now, as it's New Zealands only CarbonNZero certified electricity provider: www.ecotricity.co.nz

I really really like this car for its price point. I drove it for a week in Australia and loved it; apart from some of the software niggles and satnav mistakes. As a Tesla owner, I think the MG ZS EV is value-for-money and has features that even my Model S does not have such as the blindspot indicators on the wing mirrors, great all-round visibility, heated seats, and rear window wiper. I consider the MG ZSEV to be an ideal second EV for me; and I also recommend it to anyone who is considering an affordable family EV.

The issue with Chinese cars is that the Chinese Communist Party has, by Chinese Law, a complete, unhindered ability to collect whatever footage it wants from the car's GPS information and the car's camera footage without a warrant. If they ask for it, the company must produce it, full stop, or else the company is in violation of Chinese Law. So I would hesitate to buy one just because of that.

Soooo good, thanks mate. Great review, classic kiwi. I'm trying to compare battery degradation for this MG and a comparable Ionic. Any advice?

Seems like you got the old version of the MG ZS and not the 2022 model the new one has longer range better palstics all over and most imprtant the charging port moved from under the badge to the side and opens sideways easier to conect
Arived to the point when you talk about the new version hope you do a new review when you get a new version and compare

I think the BYD Atto 3 is now more attractive.

Traveling to the North Island next February and would really like to rent an EV for the whole trip. Any ideas on availability out of Auckland Airport? Car hire websites don't give me much affordability - not wanting to spend Tesla dollars! This model or 2nd Gen Leaf would be my choice for price point - don't want to spend 2 wks burning petrol!!

    Very helpful video. Thank you!
We're migrating to New Zealand in July and would like to buy an EV with a longer range (400-500km) because we will want to explore the country after we arrive, especially in our first year.
We also have a 2 year old and would like a higher profile vehicle.
What suggestions do you think would fit for us? We'd love to avoid chinese-made products as my wife is from Taiwan :-)

Hi Adam, for longer range the following would be good choices in terms of mileage and price.
      1. Tesla model 3 LR
      2. Hyundai Kona EV
      3. Kia Niro EV

Please low cut all audio frequencies below 40hz from your videos before upload, anyone with a subwoofer is listening to Godzilla footsteps as you drive :-)

Holden dropped the ball? Holden doesn't exist anymore and GM stopped RHD production. Of course we don't have it.

Find it stupid when Auto makers put the charge port right in front of the car. One tiny fender bender and the charge system is wrecked
