    A well designed Saiki´s showcase. It is a good song, I like it a lot. It's not their best ballad (in my opinion far from their masterpiece Anemone), but it's very well written, it has all the quality that Band Maid's goldsmith work and attention to detail offers (that bass...), and it probably seeks to cast nets on other ears. Curiously I miss the words in Japanese, who was going to say that...

    I don’t get some people being so protective of the Maids here. As if Eizinger came in the studio and wrote everything the way he wanted it and the record company forced them to record it. They like this guy, and his music, and obviously liked his input in the creative process. I don’t think they’d have recorded a song they didn’t like.
    Remember, Saiki doesn’t hesitate to say a song is bad if she thinks it’s bad! It’s not my favorite song of theirs but it’s far from my least favorite too. To sum up: it’s Band Maid approved, so it’s a “true” Band Maid song, same as any other.

    • @tinyhato
      @tinyhato Před měsícem +2

      Yes, the current trend of toxic positivity is pretty bad. I like the song, but there's nothing wrong with people expressing their negative thoughts about it. The band relies on their fans liking what they do enough to support them, so if fans don't like it they should say so.
      Luckily in Japan they seem to still understand that they need to please their fans rather than expect to be continually supported just because they're trying really hard to do what they like.
      Of course there's a line where "honest thoughts" become something a lot worse and hopefully Band-Maid fans will stay on the right side of that line.

    • @interstellardave
      @interstellardave Před měsícem +4

      @@tinyhato I agree completely. I don’t think anyone has to like it, but I think it’s wrong to say “it’s the outsider’s fault”, and leave it at that. Plus, if you’re inclined to think in that fashion, you’re looking for problems right from the start anytime someone else is credited on a song. Not a good mind-set, IMO.

    • @Grum-monkey

      What does annoy me is that some people are saying 'Oh, this will get them recognition in the West because Succubus' or something similar. I'd never heard of Succubus until now and the Maids do not need a helping hand from some western white dude. They have proven over and again that they are the best at what they do. They did this song in collaboration with Eizinger cos they like the guy and they wanted to. Any collab is going to sound different (although I do feel the mixing is a bit muddy, but that's just my ear and taste). Given how broad the range is of the Maids' work, it's no way an outlier. And be thankful it probably took a bit of pressure off Kanami to have someone else contribute so centrally to the writing. She deserves to put her feet up for a bit.

  • @TomClark-Futoura
    @TomClark-Futoura Před měsícem

    I love MISA's playing... and Akane's... and Kanami's... and the recording is good, too! Miku's lyrics are heartfelt. "I can't look into your eyes." Is Saiki her bestie? But Saiki masterfully delivers her lyrics, as always. BTW - The volume of lyrics and nuanced melodies she's committed to memory over the years is simply mind-blowing!
    Mikey did good at giving them his direction for the song, and probably helped with the English lyrics -- a good growth for Miku's craft. I don't understand why Kanami said she couldn't have come up with the main riff. Probably just her being super polite, as usual.
    I like the groove and feel of the song. I was waiting for, "I don't give a f**k" at the end. But maybe with these particular "Bestie" lyrics, that wouldn't be such a good idea. Even though at first listen it felt on par with Start Over It will undoubtedly do what every Band-Maid song does -- grow on you. Got to break through to the mainstream market with a few cuts, right? Hopefully Bestie helps with that! Thx, Band-Maid! And thanks, Wave!

  • @bishopsteiner7134
    @bishopsteiner7134 Před měsícem

    I'd be lying if I said I was wowed by it or want them to do more in this style. It's fine, but if it weren't for Saiki singing, and MISA being MISA, I would think it was a slightly above average Incubus song.
    For me, after 2 dozen listens now... I still find it entirely too restrained and western pop structure predictable. Saiki's voice is lovely, but not a lot of dynamic variety, and lack of dynamics I think sums up why I am not wowed.. because there are none.
    Even on their softest ballads, Band-Maid tend to be chock full of fills, crazy sub harmonies, and layers upon layers of stuff from our Mad Maid Mincho. It's exceedingly basic in a way that Memorable, About Us, Daydreaming, etc, are not. Even Before Yesterday or the Dragon Cries has more going on (though at least we are spared the terrible mix from the Dragon Cries here). Here, Akane feels like she's drumming in a straight jacket, with the most basic drumming since maybe Thrill. Miku feels MIA in most of the song, and even Kanami's riffs and noodling feels more basic than usual.
    Also got to love the usual "shame game" bullshit from the slobbering "super fans" in all the comments, who think everything Band Maid ever releases is a perfect 10. Not being in love with the song doesn't mean we hate the Maids, or think they have lost their way, or are anti collaboration. It's far from their first, even AFTER Mincho took over the main songwriting task. But believe it or not not every song appeals to every listener, and many of us are drawn to their music for different reasons.
    For me, it's the clever complexity that they fit into what seem to be even the slowest and softest of songs.. songs almost other bands would do the bare minimum musically on, and be fine. But part of what has long made Band Maid what they are is a refusal to write simple. I listen to other bands, like the Warning, whom I also love, for simple, but well written Rock. If I want heavier/faster, I listen to Lovebites. This... just doesn't scratch my personal Band Maid itch. Not the first song they've done that doesn't (still not a fan of Screaming, for instance), won't be the last.
    It's fine. It will be featured on the next tour cycle, and after that probably fade away from their sets, mostly. Which is true for 75% of their songs, even ones I personally enjoy a lot more than this.
    6.5/10

      As an old school hard rock heavy metal guy, no. I would have ignored them intill a harder hitting song came across, like Hate for example. Then I would become an instant fan, but I already did a few years ago when I first saw Play official live video.

      100 percent yes. And it gets better with every listen. This is my favorite chorus from them since "I'll".

    Band-Maid playing this song is like putting a thoroughbred racehorse in a dog and pony show. Not a bad song, but not anywhere near their best. Not overwhelming. Not underwhelming. Just whelming. Barely.
