    Hi Cousin Jack, I really enjoy your videos. I currently have a lot of wood that is 1 3/4 square. Do the measurements change much when using 1 1/2 square wood. Also I noticed in another video you are using a Pinewood Forge knife. Is there a big difference between a Pinewood Forge knife and a Helvie knife.
    Thanks,
    Larry

    • @whittling
      @whittling  Před 2 lety

      Hi Cousin Larry! I appreciate your questions, in your example there’s a quarter inch difference in the width/thickness of the block. The best way to adjust the dimensions is to convert the quarter inch to a ratio. For example, one quarter inch is equal to 16.6% of an inch and a half. To adjust you would add 16.6% to the height dimension and you can add the same percentage to all of the other measurements. There are some free calculators online that will do the math for us.🙂. I’m glad you asked about the knives, both Helvie and Pinewood Forge are handmade by highly skilled makers. There are a number of differences to note. The Helvie knives come in a wide variety of blade styles and handle styles. Pinewood Forge have a single handle style and a small handful of blades. The Helvie knives are made with a convex grind and the Pinewood Forge knives have a flat grind. Helvie knives do not come with a sheath, you can purchase a sheath separately. The Pinewood Forge knives come with a sheath included. You can’t go wrong with either of these exceptional knife makers.

      Hi Cousin Jack, thanks for the reply. So hopefully I figured this out right. If the block of wood is 3.25 long with the 1 1/2 square, then the 1 3/4 block of wood would be 3.78. Is that correct?
      Thanks

    Brilliant tutorial, cute hillbilly. I'm wondering how the blade is held in the handle..The Stanley knives i've seen use the 2 nicks in the blade to lock it in the handle. Have you modified the knife ? Cheers, gonna try this.

    • @whittling
      @whittling  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks very much! You’re right, the Stanley 199 has two small fittings that align with grooves all the top of the blade. I use Lenox Gold blades which have four grooves instead of the usual two. This allows me to easily adjust the length of the blade that I carve with.
