what
hi arlo
We aint buying smurfs 2 😭
I actually saw this on steam, game looks surprisingly good. Very Ratchet and Clank. gotta try it honestly!
I'll check it out sounds cool
Idk whats weirder... Seeing a sponsor section for a smurfs game... Or the fact that it actually looks... Pretty good.
We are in a VERY strange timeline.
I never expected a shooter Smurf game at all
I was going to make this exact same comment and then I saw you made it already. Same! Even Arlos non-timeline related ad reels involve a lot of timey-wimey Tom-foolery.
This. The game actually looks pretty fun.
Licensed games are so hit and miss these days so it's definitely nice to see one that looks like it hits the mark
@@jonathanwilson7949 They were mostly bad before anyways
I really am gonna miss Charles. To me, he truly is the embodiment of the characters he voiced. He made them who they are now.
They really should have let him finish his tenure as Mario with Wonder. He deserved to end Nintendo's most successful generation ever on a high note. Especially since he's been around for the highs and the lows.
Fr i genuinely believe Mario wouldn’t be nearly as iconic now if it wasn’t for his iconic voice
As unfortunate as it is, I would still rather see him retire now and enjoy his Mario money. He'll still be around at conventions and such, but after so many years he deserves this.
@@Parappadarappa2I couldn’t agree less. Mario was already a powerhouse long before Mario 64 came out.
@@AkuTenshiiZeroI reply to mr awesome, it’s possible that Nintendo didn’t force Charles to retire and he just did on his own.
Nintendo has actually received a lot of game of the year nominations in the switch generation. BotW, Odyssey, Smash Ultimate, ACNH, Metroid Dread, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, TotK, and Mario Wonder all received GOTY nominations. Not to mention wins in other categories like multiple wins for best action game, best family game, and Splatoon 3 won best multiplayer game.
yeah and pik4 won best strategy
He might he mixing up the Game Awards with the DICE Awards? Those actually rearely nominate Nintendo games for GOTY or anything really
not to mention BotW actually winning GotY
I went and looked back, and yeah 2016 and 2018 are the only years the Game Awards have been active where there wasn't at least one Nintendo game nominated for GOTY.
Nintendo wins more often in Japanese and Asian based video game awards.
From Metroid Prime Remastered and Tears of the Kingdom, to Super Mario Bros. Wonder and especially Pikmin 4, this has certainly been a big year for Nintendo with wins all around. Not to mention the success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie. And from what we've seen so far, next year will be great too.
Very much agreed
It's all so good.
So many other great ones too. Mario rpg, octopath 2, gameboy games, red dead redemption - it was awesome
After Charles VA retirement was made official, I KNEW I had to meet him and thank him for voicing my childhood before it was too late. He came to my state for a convention. Knowing how much it mattered to me, my fiancée encouraged us to really make it happen and waited for hours in line with me. Truly a bucket list moment.
P.S According to Charles when I let him, he’s recorded well over a million lines of dialogue for posterity, so his legacy may (and he hopes will) live on. ❤️
Smurfs = blue
Arlo = blue
Thats why he got sponsored by this game!
Grow up please. :)
@@schadenfreude6274 i’m sorry, what did I do wrong? I just made a silly joke
@@schadenfreude6274 Somebody got hurt today.

If that’s the reason then why was the last sponsor Soni- OH MY GOD
It's so funny how people like us have such high level of obsession for hyper specific games and licences that the most memorable announcements strongly varies depending on the person. Like the another code recollection trailer is the most excited i felt watching a nintendo direct since idk the botw trailer from 2016 and i'm not even joking, we're probably like 2 on earth to be like that. It's nice to think that every direct is another man's treasure
I agree. One of my favorite things about the gaming space as a whole. Maybe some things are small, but there is literally something for everyone and feels great to see folks get super excited about announcements even if it's not something i am personally invested in
I feel like I’m the only person that’s excited for the Mario vs donkey Kong remake
Yeah I am weirdly extremely excited for the Luigi's Mansion 2 HD, that game nearly trumps TTYD for my personal enjoyment and nostalgia factor.
I’ve never played Another Code but I’ve been so weirdly excited for the remakes since they were announced. Just the intrigue of why Nintendo decided to give these hyper-niche games complete makeovers, combined with the fact that they look and sound great, make me so ready to pick it up in a couple weeks(!)
The highlight moment of the game awards this year for me was next gen monster hunter finally getting some sort of reveal, I almost cried lol
Tears of the Kingdom is my new favorite game of all time, so it was a good year for me, but Arlo got Metroid, Pikmin, AND an announcement for TYD. This has got to be the best year EVER for him.
Play some games before PS3 to experience peak gaming
@chiquita683 Grandpa, you're supposed to be napping.
there more peak on modern hardware tho @@chiquita683
@@chiquita683 Lol. I was born in 1983, so I remember that time very well. I also love the SNES, PS2, Dreamcast eras, no question. But this year was something else!
@@mr.awesome6011Different people like different games. I hated Breath of the Wild so I’ll probably hate Tears of the Kingdom.
Can I just say that what I've been loving about the Switch from launch to now is how it felt like it gave us so many game changers :
* A return to 3D sandbox Mario
* Arguably two of the biggest Zelda games ever made
* The pinnacle of Smash Bros
* Metroid making a grand return to form with Dread and the Prime remaster
* Pikmin rising to become one of Nintendo's biggest IPs
* Kirby's first fully 3D game
* Peach's first solo game since the DS
Say what you want about the entire Switch library, but when it hits a home run, it's a glorious one
Not to mention the surprising resurgence of mario rpgs
Don't forget the biggest selling Fire Emblem game of all time being Three Houses, and the entire Xenoblade Chronicles trilogy on the same system like the Pikmin trilogy.
@@migatte2172this has gotta be one of the best years for Mario rpgs. Mario rpg remake, Mario and Luigi nso, thousand year door remake.
@@Door227 yup and we might See more of it. The smrpg remake Sold well which was honestly a positive surprise. Now paper mario should do the same thing. But yeah mario rpg community has been winning recently so yh
So many great games came out this year that I haven’t been able to finish them all
And many more will come out this year too, which is why I now limit myself.
I haven't even had the time to START Fire Emblem: Engage LOL
Nintendo is TOO good!!
@@ZachariahMicallefand it's like a 60 hour story too.
One thing Nintendo did NOT do in 2023: mass layoffs. Huge respect.
well nintendo is incredibly private. almost none of their hirings or layoffs in their EPD groups are ever published as every employee signs an NDA. so nintendo could have had layoffs, we just would never know.
If I recall, I believe they committed to hiring more staff this year, and not laying-off. Their staff also had a major win for increased wages/rights
I don't think any of the big Japanese devs had layoffs (do note that PlayStation is now headed in the US)
@@philipbaker4970 this was literally not said or published anywhere
They did increase their employees' salaries. I remember hearing about it amongst the TotK price discussion, I think Arlo even mentioned it in a video.@@cwega2463
ghost trick remaster was my game of the year for 2023, never expected it to see the light of day again and im so happy it did
YYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Good game.
If you look back at the entire history of The Game Awards from 2014 to today, Nintendo has actually had a GOTY nom in every year except for 2016 and 2018. It is far more unusual for them NOT to be nominated.
Thousand Year Door being remastered really gives me hope that the developers will shift things in that direction for the next new game in the series. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind another Super Paper Mario style game either, both were incredible imo
you'll have to wait until 2028 for that.
The Mario Movie definitely played a part in Nintendo's success this year. I'll be looking forward to the sequel.
And very nervous about the upcoming Zelda movie.
@@nameforcomments4092 optimistic hope for that one for me
No video game/video game related thing in 2023 made me happier than Xenoblade 3 getting Future Redeemed. Ultimate bow tied atop an utterly fantastic trilogy.
Amazing how Monolith managed to improve so much in XC2 and 3 with those DLC campaigns
@@thekiss2083It feels like they just about perfected the formula just as they finished the series
I just wanted to see all the characters after the post credits scene.
@@jameslawrenson1208 I still kinda wanna see a Xenoblade Chronicles Warriors game
I can’t believe the switch is almost seven years old now. So much has happened since March 3 2017
The Switch era is the opposite of the Wii U era when it comes to how fast it went. The Wii U lasted for 4 years yet it felt like 8 years due to how slow everything was.
I honestly think Nintendo is re-releasing so many classic games to test the waters. If those classic game styles still work. Remaster VS remake. Putting all of a series entries on one console generation. And most importantly, how much they'll actually sell. Because if TTYD doesnt sell at least 3-5 million, they may consider it a flop.
It’s still crazy that Arlo got Metroid Prime Remastered, Pikmin 4, Pikmin 1/2, Zelda TOTK, and an announcement of Paper Mario TTYD all in one year…
I’m just here to mention that Xenoblade 3: Future Redeemed came out this year and was great in the off chance Arlo doesn’t mention it in this video…
Super Mario Wonder has the most satisfying 100% of any game I played this year (also happened to be my first Mario game that I managed to 100%, I usually just beat Mario games casually)
It wasn't mentioned since Arlo doesn't play the series, but the Xenoblade 3 DLC came out and that somehow was even better than the main game, which is already the best game in the series. I can't wait for Paper Merio, but other than that, there's absolutely nothing to look forward to. I hope we get a direct soon.
I understand he doesnt play it but he could have at least mentioned it
@@th3l05t-kfpreactoroperator5 He likely doesn't even know about the DLC.
It's really good but saying it's better than the main game is stretching it a bit. It feels good as a companion piece but lacks the narrative message the main-game had but it was great for fanservice and filling in lore gaps tho. Still one of the best ways to end a saga I've seen tho don't get me wrong it's phenomenal.
@@Cue-Ball. You could make the argument the structure and gameplay loop is better, with how well each gameplay mechanic integrates together. Exploring gives you points to upgrade arts and skills, and you have to unlock accessory slots by finding them from exploring. It works well for the smaller game format and makes exploration feel more substantial. Of course, no telling if this would work well in a full length game. Might get repetitive for a 100 hour game compared to 20 hours.
@@PurpletridentI doubt that.
arlo getting a sponsor for Smurf game of all things was NOT on my 2024 bingo card
Why no mention of Xenoblade 3 DLC Arlo? That was personally my game of the year even if technically it wasn't a separate game lol. It was as long as one at least!
he doesn’t care for Xenoblade. though i do find it funny how Xenoblade story expansions are often longer than typical nintendo games lmao.
Love the video. Year prediction videos will still always be the one I eagerly anticipate!
Bring on the predictions/prediction review video :D My hype for it every year is so real
One of my favorite years for gaming in a bit
Boy, I gotta say, The Completionist is a real good guy for preserving all of the Wii U and 3DS games from the eShop and spending tens of thousands of dollars to do so. He does it for us. Now let me take a big sip of water and see what he’s up to now

Oh my sweet child..
Another thing that should've been mentioned here is that as of September 30th, 2023, the Switch has sold an amazing number of 132.46 million consoles. That statistic is before the holiday season, which I'd imagine the holidays benefit that number even greater than any other time of the year. So the Switch is very close to the legacy to that of the Nintendo DS (154.02 mil) & that of the Playstation 2 (155 mil). Even if the Switch does not pass them, the Switch has had some incredible momentum over its whole lifetime that Nintendo hasn't witnessed for a while now with other consoles/handhelds. So I'd imagine just reaching number 3 is a win.
yeah the switch’s sales are fantastic. it definitely won’t outsell DS and PS2 due to declining sales and the switch 2, but it will be close.
Genuinely this is one of my favorite end of year videos from Arlo.
But it's really cool that Mario Wonder, Zelda TOTK, and Pikmin 4 all won their subcategories!
I will always be thankful for the Mario movie for introducing me to Arlo. Now am a big fan and watch every video.
That first cast trailer announcement reaction was legendary and any time I need to smile and cheer up, I go back and watch it.
I wish I could have a happy new year, Arlo. I really do.
Is… is that an Arlo Pikmin amiibo on his desk?
Love these videos every year! It’s one of my favorites!
Why are your videos so good arlo you are a literal puppet
It was good to be a big fan for alot of things last year, 2023 is hands down one the best years in gaming. I was surprised to see how much we got from Nintendo this year, I was just expecting TOTK and then dlc for Mario kart and rabbits, big surprise for Mario RPG and a wonderful return to 2d Mario with Wonder and others like Pikmin 4, Metroid remaster etc. Then we have big games like FF7 rebirth on the way and for Nintendo, TTYD remake on the way, peach game, and potential next console coming which will have big new games… man
Your reaction to the paper mario remake was one of my favourite things to happen last year😂
Happy new year everyone :)
Arlo in Splatoon 3 are you using Arlo as a tag? If yes thank you for the team work you are an outstanding player. If not someone is using that tag and is good
absolutely agree that 2023 was a stacked year for nintendo, the fact that this year started with kirby's rtdldx made it easily the best first impression they could have given for nintendo fans and it just kept getting higher and higher
Still don't get TTYD being announced so soon.
It would make more sense to show it on the first Direct of 2024.
I considered buying SMRPG but decided to wait for TTYD instead. Wonder if anyone else did the same.
I skipped Mario Wonder to get RPG. I don’t regret it in the slightest. Amazing game. Mario RPGs need all the sales they can get.
9:21 yeah pikmin 4 might not have been a big release compared to Mario and Zelda in terms of popularity, but it sure as hell lived up to them in terms of quality and quantity of content
An amazing year! Thank you Arlo for your thoughts and opinions over the year - without you i would have missed the huge enjoyment of Pikmin 4, 1 and 2, and may even have missed Metroid too 😮 All the best for 2024!
I am playing the first smurf game on switch right now. It is quite fun, so nice sponsorship 😀
And it was an awesome year😀👍
If there’s anything that 2023 for Nintendo approved is that the switch still has life left in it, so I don’t wanna hear no more complaining about the switch being on its last legs because these games prove that the demise of the switch is greatly exaggerated, and Metroid prime showed exactly what the switch is capable of in graphics if anything 2023 was the best year for the switch and I say this as a recent switch OLED owner who is absolutely enjoying my switch.
Can't wait for what's in store for us this year! Perhaps the Switch 2? Fingers crossed for a new 3D Mario at launch!
GOD I really hope so
In Sweden, both the Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom have a price tag of around $65 - $70. So it wasn’t really a big deal here.
It’s so wild how in the beginning of the presumably golden years of the PS5 and XSX and the twilight years of Switch, Nintendo unquestionably had the best first party line up this year.
Thank you for mentioning the quality of the directs! I felt like after every direct, I was seeing people say how they're not good or just mediocre. I'm not going to play every game, but I thought they were fantastic directs!
I know you talked about metroid prime already but I would still love a prime remaster review in full.
2023 was great, it is when I got into Pikmin, it had TotK and Pikmin 4 two of my fave games ever. And it is when I started really watching your channel and you became my fave youtuber and still are, ty for your amazing videos and I loved watching the big fat review of BotW and Pikmin⭐️✨
I’ve said all along, if 2023 was the last full year of the switch, then it went out with a BANG, And this could be the greatest transition for consoles the company has EVER had.
Nice 2023 summary! Forgot to mention the opening of Super Nintendo World in the US. ;)
I’m most excited to see Arlo’s reaction to a Metroid Prime 4 reveal this year.
It was a lot of remakes released and announced.
Metroid Prime, Pikmin 1+2, Mario RPG, TTYD, Luigi's Mansion 2, Mario vs DK, Advance Wars 1+2.
I'm not complaining, this is what Nintendo should do more often. Remakes are easier and cheaper to make but are still beloved by many.
I feel like the Mario Kart 8 DLC was a test run for what they are going to do with MK9. Release the game with a regular amount of courses then keep releasing for years after. Kinda like a hybrid games as a service model, except hopefully more consumer friendly
I expect the next Mario Kart to start with 32 tracks and maybe get 4 more DLC cups through paid dlc. Kinda like the Wii U version of MK8.
2023 was the GOAT switch year for me - awesome range of titles :)
Now, @ArloStuff , Where is your 2024 predictions video? I need it in my life!
Met Charles 10 years ago at comic con at the area nintendo set up across from the convention center. Super nice dude.
Ahhh, who made your little Arlomiibo? It is adorable!
I bought Mario Wonder for my 5 year old niece and 10 year old nephew for Christmas and they have been absolutely hooked!
What about you?
I didn’t get much on switch in 2023. Loved TotK. Probably my best non-fighting game game. Couldn’t afford the other things, rather, it was this or that and I generally picked the one I wanted more at the time.
Well, you actually fight A LOT in Totk.
How did you not mention the opening of Super Mario World at Universal Studios?
There were a ton of good things this year, was very happy with this year as a Nintendo fan.
A WONDER-ful moment?! 4:59
Butternut Squash? Yes Please!
2024 will be the year of Warlo your long lost evil twin.
As an Advance Wars fan, Reboot Camp falling under the radar disappointed me. Couldn't even get a best strategy game nomination despite being way more strategy driven that Pikmin or FE.
2023 was the year of Arlo
Hey Arlo,
I just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate your positive attitude. You always try to focus on the positive aspects of a game and don't dwell too long on the negatives when possible. Overall, it creates a wonderful atmosphere.
Have a nice one :)
I'd played and enjoyed Pikmin 1 and 3 Deluxe and finally got around to playing Pikmin 4 (which I got with my voucher and had been waiting to start until I beat TOTK) and MAN. I've just about 100%ed the final content and it's just so incredible.
I don't feel like the next system will RELEASE this year, but i do have a feeling Nintendo will at the very least, the VERY, VERY LEAST, confirm it is real and it's coming and to watch out for more news in the future, i have a feeling they are probably gonna reveal it this year then release it next year but at the very least i think we are gonna see them start teasing it, whatever it is.
Nintendo actually has a game nominated for GOTY almost every year!
2022- Xenoblade 3
2021- Metroid Dread
2020- Animal Crossing NH
2019- Smash Ultimate
Two in one year is rare, but that happened in 2017 with BOTW and Odyssey.
Such a strong year for a system that's 6 years old.
As for 2024 there're some exciting games but they're mostly remakes, so it'll be interesting to see what happens this year.
I do see this year as a transitional year because sooner or later the Switch 2 is coming out and every big switch game I would say is probably out by now and we're in a winding down period with smaller titles and remakes.
I just hope they can revive some IPs such as F-Zero, Star Fox, perhaps Eternal Darkness.
I'm definitely expecting a swan song of some kind for the Switch coming out this year.
I NEED the Super Mario RPG video, Arlo.
The most important thing for Pikmin was 4 has sold over a million copies in Japan alone. If something is bigger in Japan than other areas (Splatoon, Fire Emblem) Nintendo will make sure it gets a lot of love and care.
exactly. that’s why they basically neglect metroid as a franchise since 80% of its sales come from america and it struggles to sell a few hundred thousand copies in japan.
Metroid Prime Remastered was my highlight of 2023 for me
ToTK and Pikmin 4 for me are tied
No idea what you were talking about with the Game Awards, Nintendo has had a GOTY nominee every year since 2017 (except 2018, where they still had a big presence with Smash)
2023 was an... interesting year for me when it comes to gaming. See, 2023 was the year that I started going to college, so I haven't had nearly as much time for gaming as I would like. That said, of the games that I DID get to play last year, I certainly can't say that it was a bad year for me. The three games I had the most fun with last year would have to be Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Metroid Prime Remastered, and the Super Mario RPG remake (which I halted my Live A Live remake playthrough for and even finished just before New Years). Funny how that works; my favorite games of 2023 happened to be two modern classic games faithfully remade from the ground up and one that's just the original game with a fresh coat of paint and some nice QoL features.
As of Christmas last month, I now own a total of 53 Switch games, 51 of them being physical cartridges and the other 2 digital (those being Super Kirby Clash and Deltarune Chapters 1 & 2). But out of all of them, I have only played 19 of my physical games, 6 of which I haven't completely finished. I have some big ones like Cuphead, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy that I haven't even launched yet on my Switch. Here's the kicker: *I'm still getting more.* Whether for my birthday this month or from any Amazon purchases I make throughout the year, my backlog will just keep growing and growing. Plus, now that I'm in my 3rd quarter of college, my gaming time is still severely limited. Still, when I do manage to make time, I definitely have a smorgasbord of options.
bro has 50 physical games and has played less than half of them. cmon bro and you only started college? that mean you just asked your parents growing up to buy games you would never play. what’s the point in that?
Tears of The Kingdom, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario Wonder was my favorite games released on the Switch in 2023
2023 turned my mother from someone who had only really been a mario and animal crossing person to someone whos played far more hours than neccesarry in all 4 pikmin titles.
What is the ost in the background for the first part of the video? It reminded me of Pokemon but I don't think it's from those games
One thing I’ve noticed Nintendo has been doing this year that I hope they stop is releasing digital games before the physical version. It’s seems like their way of increasing profits artificially because fans are going to buy the game when it releases and then buy the physical version when that releases, doubling the profit. It’s hard to call it scummy because you clearly don’t have to buy them but if you want the physical version, you either have to wait many months while everyone else plays the game or buy it twice but I hope they stop doing this and just release both versions at once like a normal game release
11:35 Only in the US, in Europe most AAA Nintendo Games like Zelda or Mario do cost 70€ since the release of the Switch.
he knows. most nintendo games in america are also not $70, only zelda is. and over in Europe they still increased TOTK’s price to €60
2023 was just amazing as a whole for gaming. It was smash hit after smash hit from almost all the big and little studios, seriously just wtf, 2023 is the best year for gaming I've seen in like, forever.
I mean there were some bad ones too, but they didn't even matter! (Starfield moment)
I hope this becomes the norm, just amazing games with clear passion in them.
Starfield wasn't really. "bad" just not fantastic like the rest. Outdated. Gollum is bad
Can't complain too much about the $70 for TOTK since I wasn't interested in the game to begin with. But it does seem kinda exploitative since they know a lot of people will forgive anything for more BOTW. Like Kit Ellis said "It's the sequel to one of Nintendo's most successful games. You're GOING to buy it." They would never have gotten away with that for something like Skyward Sword HD. Heck people still got mad that SSHD was $60 even though Mario and Zelda games are always priced that.
Well, that and the size of the game in terms of world and content. I'm almost done with a second playthrough, and I can see why this was the game they decided to start charging $70 for. It's inevitable for the next console, and it's already here with the other three as well. Not to mention inflation. It is what it is.
@@mr.awesome6011 I'd agree with that if everything in the game was new, but they already had the base and just expanded on it. So much of it just feels imo like the same game again that to charge even more for it seems tacky.
PS5 and Xboxwhatever charging $70 at least makes SOME sense since those games are new generations with better graphics. But paying more for the same game with a extra toppings seems slimy, like they're only doing it because of how successful BOTW was.
@thelastwindwaker7948 It's really not the same game, though. It's like any direct sequel that is going to feel similar to the first game but is still new in many ways. The "$70 DLC" argument has been debunked several times already. I don't feel like regurgitating it. I've already made my point.
Thanks for the video
I never thought I’d see someone sponsored by smurfs
Nintendo showed this year that you can both be a megacompany with lots of money AND get on people's good sides. I think other AAA studios and gaming companies should be taking notes about this year because Nintendo was a pretty shining example of just doing things because they sounded fun, and people raved ovcer it. What a year to be a Nintendo fan.
Heck, if ALL things technology were as good as they were for Nintendo this year, I think we'd all be happy about it. Take notes, Microsoft.
I’m still catching up on some of the things i didn’t get around to last year. I’m playing Fire Emblem Engage right now i’m really liking it
God I love that game, definitely my highlight of the year. Probably my favorite switch game ngl.
I wish I could enjoy Engage purely from a gameplay perspective, but the characters and writing were so atrocious that I nearly stopped playing it multiple times. It frustrates me how it feels like they learned nothing from what people liked about Three Houses and continued in the direction of Fates, which people already hated.
Is it really so hard for them to stick with the more traditional gameplay formula while keeping the writers and more grounded direction of Three Houses?
