  • What is UP CZcams, welcome to Fred's Full Throttle.
In today's video I'm going to cover several respected outlets' coverage of the C8 Z06, and what their impressions and feedback are on the car. While the majority of the information is likely what you'd expect, there are 2 surprises lurking in all the details which both caught me a little off guard. So join me today as we continue digging into the C8 Z06 to find out everything we can!

"Speed is accessible and approachable" I had a supercharged gen 3 Mustang that was the first car I thought could hurt me if I made a mistake. The edge is a fun place to hangout, as long as you pick the edge. My current C8 is a much more enjoyable car to drive. I envision the Z06 to be an enhanced version, a very enhanced version of the stingray. Been at 3000 status for a month...still no news...solid Fred...r

    Fred,
Welcome back! Glad you and Rachel are feeling better post COVID-19 recovery.
Great video and content as usual! I've been playing around with the build configurator and building Z06s between $145k-$162k depending on options. My current is at $159k and I'm pretty happy! Let's hope my #990 spot at Ciocca is a next year car...ha ha ha 🤣
When I went to the NCM Bash, the engineers said some interior changes were coming a new color of dark gray and he hinted about the divider possibly changing too!
    Enjoy your weekend

    Fred,
So sorry to hear about the COVID. My wife has CIDP, so COVID for her could be deadly. We have not flown since 2019.
I agree whole-heartedly about the drivability of the Z06. My impression is that us track guys will be able to safely optimize the Z06 because it is more forgiving. Even the race car drivers said that the C8R is significantly easier to drive than the C7R was.
I hope you are correct about the C8 Z06 potential Ring time under 7 minutes, but based on something Tadge said, I doubt it. Tadge Juechter said that the Z06 w/ the ZO7 option, “Will hang with the C7 ZR1 for quickest lap of a session, but if you look at the average lap over a full tank of fuel, the C8 Z06 will be quicker.” He went on to say that the difference in Z06 lap times over a session is zero, even negative. Sometimes the fastest lap of the day was the last lap.

3000 Status ZO6. Fred, excellent info, as usual. Glad you're both better now.
Red Mist HTC 3LZ ZO6 Natural Dipped with exposed CF wheels & aero (read ZO7 constraint) remains at 3000 Status. Purist will say I'm getting a base ZO6, and they're right as it will be missing the high wing and stiffer suspension. I'm very fortunate that my dealership allowed me to start the ZO6 List @ 3 years ago. Almost didn't comment here because some may think I had some type of an advantage with the dealership, but no insider stuff here. Just in-person conversations, initial emails to validate my place #1 spot on the List, many follow-up texts over @ 3 years, and regularly stopping by to pxx on the showroom floor to mark my spot, ha. My dealer has been good to me, and it's at MSRP.

The Corvette Team said that the change to mid-engine was based on the fact that they had pushed the performance envelope as far as they could with a front-engine model. The Stingray still has not hit that level of performance, so it stands to reason that it was easier to keep everything on one architecture rather than two.

      Hi John,
I'm glad to hear you and your family got through Covid and came out on the other side. It was a real eye opener for us, and my heart goes out to those who weren't so fortunate. Congrats on the build date, that sounds fantastic! Wow, that's a super nice offer! If you really mean it, please feel free to shoot me an email at fredsfullthrottle@gmail.com, and I'd love to talk a bit about it. I would be interested in potentially working something out (especially making sure that you were comfortable with everything), as long as I could travel to where you are. Would love to talk through it a bit. Also, please don't feel like you have to offer anything (and whatever you are comfortable with is fine with me). I'm grateful for the opportunity, but also don't want you to feel pressured or obligated. I'd just be thrilled to get some time to be around the car, even if just riding in the passenger seat (obviously in the Spring!).
Have a nice day, and I really appreciate the super generous offer!

Fred, the more reviews that are done on this new C8 Z06/Z07 the more it's killing me with this wait game..... After placing my reservation/deposit with Mike Furman at Criswell Chevrolet in Gaithersburg, Maryland in early 2019 for the Z06, I figured I was in pretty good shape to be amongst the first with an allocation. However after learning there have been those who placed their reservations/deposits clear back in 2015 when the C7 Z06 were first released, who knows? But with this super slow roll out and somewhat strange appearing distribution of allocations with this first run, the anticipation and anxiety seems to only intensify as the days go by until January when more allocations might possibly come out.
Regardless of all these sterling reviews, which only builds more excitement and anticipation, I'm waiting for Motor Trend's Randy Pobst who was a Porsche Team driver to test drive the new C8 Z07 on the track. Pobst has always appeared to be partial to Porsche's whereby he's always compared everything else to his obvious favorite (Porsche) including all previous generations of Corvette's. I always had the feeling he kinda looked down upon the Corvette in his reviews as being more of a muscle car with it's crude unsophisticated handling characteristics..... Especially the C7 Z06 that overheated and went into limp mode during his test session with it.
I'm hoping to hear a far more flattering and positive review after he puts this new C8 Z07 equipped Z06 through it's paces on the track. I can't possible see how it could be anything but positive, yet I'm sure they all feel compelled to give some meaningless negatives just to appear they're being objective with it. You know, stupid little things nobody really cares about.

2019? 2015!! No wonder I am so far back in the weeds with getting involved only many months ago. I am more likely to end up with an E-Ray that may end up as a stepping stone to the Z06 unless something of more interest becomes the new object of desire. The Pandemic was no help...not for any manufacturer.

    • @FredsFullThrottle

I'm with you Tom. The slow burn of information is really tough, especially when many(most) of us are *years* back in line at some dealership.
I'm with you on Randy's review, can't wait to see what he thinks. I feel he's a pretty fair judge of a car, and like hearing what he has to say.
I will say, that I've never felt he was unfair or particularly biased. I've driven a handful of the latest top tier 992 Porsche's, and they are incredibly well put together, handle and perform very well, and though I'm no racing driver, I haven't felt his assertions don't hold merit. I think Porsche is a pretty reasonable comparison for Corvette (throughout generations). In my head over the years, Porsche was always gunning for Ferrari, Corvette always gunning for Porsche, etc... To be compared to such great cars (to me) is a nod towards what Corvette has done with most generations, and I never saw it as a slight towards Corvette. Love my C7 as much as I do, having driven the rival cars, I do agree with the few criticisms I've heard. That said, it doesn't take anything away from how great the cars are.
My wife and I are watching through all the seasons of Top Chef right now, and one of the things the head judge said rings true for cars too. "When everything is so good, the winner is found based on the smallest of details".
Anyway, sorry to ramble, I am a big Corvette fan (and big Porsche fan), and I look forward to seeing how Randy does. I'm also very excited for Chris Harris, Jason Cammisa, and Rory Reid's reviews whenever those come out.
Thanks for reaching out Tom, nice to hear from you! Have a nice day!

though the Z06 will be the top experience in Corvette(for now), the C8 Stingray is also way ahead of the C7 in all iterations. It may not be as powerful as the C7 Z06 but the driving experience is far better. My first Corvette was a new 1968 427 tri-power rated at 435 hp but actually running over 500hp, so I know the thrill of going through the gears. But this car was not bettered until the C7 ( C6 Z06s not withstanding)). But the C8 in any iteration is better than all previous models. You can get the same excitement using the paddles as a stick, but it is different. True you don't have to be as good a driver to do it right, but the truly good driver will appreciate being able to fine tune braking, entering corners, exiting corners etc. tech has made it easier for lesser drivers to actually track their cars but the truly good drivers will still blow the lesser drivers off the track since they will be able to focus their skills on other ways to go faster.

Agree completely! And a new car doesn't take anything away from the prior gens. Everyone can get the one that checks all the right boxes for them. I never understand why some people feel the need to bash something else if it's not their cup of tea. None of us are buying these cars as an obligation, we're buying them for fun. What is fun for me doesn't have to be what's fun for someone else, and vice versa. I think the smartest of us will capitalize on the situation, to end up with a great car, while the others will just complain about cars they haven't even driven.

Steering wheel...all C8's have this and how many other exotics? Panel gaps? Is this a preproduction car meant to function not win car shows? I would be more concerned about a problem with the trans function.

    • @FredsFullThrottle
      @FredsFullThrottle  Před rokem

      Hi Terry,
I agree, some of these things are subjective. The panel fitment on my C7 isn't perfect, but it hasn't detracted from my love of the car one bit. I can't speak to the steering wheel till I try a C8, but I don't see it being a huge issue unless you're turning very sharply at low speed. On the other side of the coin though, I don't necessarily understand why they needed to reinvent the wheel. Either way, the point was that there are very few lows to the car, and none of them were significant. All in all, sounds like a great car!

@@FredsFullThrottle About that steering wheel, how many others in all the articles and videos we have seen, have commented on the wheel being problematical? That said, as you say, "why reinvent the wheel?" Maybe a survey of C8 owners to see how many have an issue with the new steering wheel shape. I think the result might be as we expect.
