    The reason for the split horizontal is that at the frame rate on the arcade cabinet, with the CRTV screen, it looked transparent and cool. It looks weird with high resolution and modern refresh rate.

    • @Wolfedge75
      @Wolfedge75 Před 21 dnem +2

      Fascinating.
      It’s been a while since I last played the previous collection but IIRC there’s a CRT filter present.
      I’m gonna have to see this through the (literal) old-school lenses.

    • @Kakeen
      @Kakeen Před 21 dnem +3

      This is true, my friend had a xmvsf cabinet with crt and cyclops beam looked almost solid. The effect was the same in MSHvsSF. I remember seeing the cabinet in arcades and it looked the same.
      I guess some games were just meant to be played on CRTs.

    • @AcidGlow
      @AcidGlow  Před 21 dnem +7

      Even if the beam is solid on CRT monitors, you can see that its still only 1 frame that's on screen with hit sparks ontop of it. Very low quality animation compared to COTA that has multiple frames during the animation. If it's a solid beam like you said, then it's about equal to the one in MvsC2.

    • @Kakeen
      @Kakeen Před 21 dnem +1

      Yeah, I prefer the solid beam over the one they used in Xmvsf and MSHvsSF. Glad they decided to make it a solid beam in MvC2. Also I always found it funny how in xm cota every beam had a splash effect like you were shooting juice or something.

  • @johnnynorrisjr.39
    @johnnynorrisjr.39 Před 21 dnem +26

    I have to think that it's because games after COTA included more characters whose animation frames had to be stored in (and instantly called from) the RAM. At a certain point, animations had to be skimped on, due to the limitations of the RAM size that could be called instantaneously to the screen.

    • @D3Vlicious

    1:11 One interesting addition is that in every version after COTA, there's some smear/motion blur transition frames as he gets in position to fire off the beam.
    At normal speed, it's easy to miss but with the slow-mo you can see it a little better.
    There's also the dust that kicks up behind him from getting into position which is a little more obvious.

    Im not a comic lore nerd with every known fact, but with what ive seen Cyclops in (Xmen movies) and games (xmen legends, xmen reign of apocalypse etc.) i played, i noticed that, his visor is like a surpressor, it holds back feom him really doing some damage with his eyes, like in the 1st xmen when toad snatches his visor, Cyclops unleashes a big ass blast destroying the entire roofs building that they were in, imagine Cyclops totally letting loose taking off his visor for a special move, itll be like Super Ultra Mega Optic Blast!!

    I think they reduced some of the animations and even redrawyed some to fit for gameplay reasons.
    If you notice, X-Men Cota Hyper-X moves doesn't even had a Superpause, it worked similar to EX Moves in Darkstalkers games, going straight to the supermoves.
    From Marvel Super Heroes, they now have a specific frame for superpauses before the hyper combo starts. Cyclops for example, the X-pose he does with his arms before Mega Optic Blast is awesome as hell[A thing that he shares also with most X-Men characters, they does the X pose before the hyper combo advent].

    It's not just Cyclops, the whole animation in XCOTA was the best of the first 6 Vs. games. I think the producers felt that the game was too slow and had to cut frames to make the game faster because XCOTA was easily the slowest game of all 6. It was the most well animated but the slowest game in terms of speed. In subsequent games they didn't just cut out frames of animation but also entire poses as well, Psylocke is the most well known example.

    Thats cool, I always viewed Cyclops Optic Blast as a Ki Blast. (Kiho from Dragon Ball) as like Cyclops Kamehameha or Superman's Heat Vision as his Kamehameha in a way. Espically he goes Mega Optic Blast and Ryu doing a Super Haduoken. Thats a site to see. I hope the eventual MVC4 not counting Infinite returns to the fast paced chaotic battles of pervious MVC games and include more Marvel and Capcom characters like the X-Men, Fantastic Four and more.

    One thing that's interesting is how part of the beam stops short when it hits a character. While this could be just sprite masking (could the CPS2 even do this) it could indicates that the beam is composed of multiple smaller component sprites that are being emitted from the the expanding cone in front of Cyke. It also explains why the beams look split in later games - because they are. From XvSF onward, they look to be made of many smaller components with less animation so that when it hits someone, the parts that disappear match the opponent's sprite somewhat. Look at how the entire beam just stops in COTA even against a short character like Wolverine, but only parts split from XvSF onwards. The MvC2 one, however, is probably using sprite masking instead of multiple sprites.
