Yes, NZ SAS were established in 1955 during the Malayan emergency. The British government asked New Zealand to establish an SAS squadron to work along side the British SAS Regiment in Malaya. Apart from the officers and NCOs, the first troops that made up the New Zealands SAS squadron were drawn from civilian street. A call went out and over 1000 men volunteered, this was whittled down to a squadron size unit. It wasn't a fluke that the British had asked New Zealand for this unit as when the British first created the SAS in the deserts of North Africa during WWII, another similar type of unit was running around the desert causing havoc amongst the Germans and Italians with deep raids into their territories. This was the Long Range Desert Group or the LRDG. The first troops were drawn from the New Zealand Division and later the British army. In fact, the SAS went along with the LRDG on raids to learn their tactics and techniques so, the New Zealand army has had brother relationship with the British SAS since its inception

Their explanation is exactly what I have in mind should they ask me the 'Why' question.
Want to serve, want to learn skills and develop excellence (especially mentally), want to test myself to see what is in there, and then give back to the community with the skills I would have learned. Ya know, maybe as Personal Trainer one day or Fitness Coach to youth. I know it's not a given, and people tell me it'll be the toughest nut to crack - but it's not their dream, it's mine. And I do not want to look back, 20-30 years from now, regretting not to have at least given it my all. "Who Dares Wins".
To all those who also plan to join, I wish you all the best. Dig deep within yourself to find that endurance!
