Between the Dodge pro master, and any other van, after doing heavy research with fleet owners, and watching many videos of mechanics that work on these vans, I’ve concluded that the Ford transit is reliable and shade-tree mechanic workable . IF one stays on top of maintenance and gets ahead of the top issues, like the reservoir tank, the bulging antifreeze hose, and switching out the turbos, siphoning the differential fluid every 30,000 miles and replacing it with AMSOil gear fluid - just knowing your vehicle. Cuz at the end of the day, your van is your foundation for your build. Your knowledge and carpentry and electrical plumbing should be on the same level of your knowledge on the drivetrain and overall maintenance of the vehicle. Mercedes is also reliable but hard to maintain on my own and hard to find a mechanic. Another reason why I chose the Ford transit.
Yeah, we came from a sprinter.. which can be a nightmare if you break down in the middle of nowhere like this, and also looked at transits which were $20,000 more than this van at the time we were looking. Neither of those vans are wide enough for me (Seth) to sleep in with this layout as well. Since making this video we actually figured out what happened. The last dealership we went to for an O2 sensor wasn’t certified to work on the promasters but did anyway. They ended up messing up the cat and created an exhaust leak that eventually led us to this issue. It’s unfortunate but honestly the van has been pretty great aside from that and it was a specific place not the van itself that created the issue.

It’s such a nice little site. It’s called deans campground on Hipcamp! We stayed in the hummingbird site and it was great. We haven’t gotten if fixed yet but do have an idea with what’s going on so hopefully we’ll have an update soon!
I absolutely love you van layout.. it is the correct way to build with bathroom away from and not facing the kitchen! Or across from it! Absolutely brilliant! 👑❤️🌹🙏 👑❤️🌹🙏
My wife and I are van lifers going on two years now. Our van has been in the shop in Northern Washington for 2 months waiting to get a new transmission. We are lucky enough to have friends nearby we can stay with. We are grateful for this. It totally sucks, but nothing to do but get it done. Good luck and I hope it is fixed ASAP!
It’s been 3 weeks so far. They are doing a cylinder head but if that doesn’t work it’ll need an engine. They say 6-9 months for an engine so we are hoping it’s fixed this week!
@@scarletandseth Wow, so, here's an update on ours. We got it back and had it for about an hour as we stopped for lunch. We got back in and started on our way, and the engine failed. Apparently they forgot to attach a hose to the bottom of the radiator and all the coolant ran out. Now we also have to get a new engine! I feel your pain. Not sure how long this is going to take. Luckily we are staying with friends, so it's not like we are in a place we have to spend lots of money one, but it's still a hassle. Our friends love us, but not forever. LOL. I'll keep an eye on your journey. Sorry to hear this is happening. 😥
@@ScottErb Dang that is such a bummer. Sorry that happened to y'all. Honestly the entire issue on our end was from another dealership not properly re installing the part when the o2 sensor originally went bad as well. It seems like shop error on small repairs often leads to much larger issues. We are pretty disappointed in the whole warranty process since you may be better off just going to a smaller shop who actually care about their customers and paying out of pocket. Hoping the best for you on your repair and we'll be updating before too long about the whole issue! (once we learn if its actually fixed or not lol)

What is the gas mileage before and after the engine problems? That's kinda my basic diagnostic vs engine light. If the mileage suffers, then you know the engine is dumping fuel, oil.
I'm sorry if you've been told this before but please be careful with your cats. There are wild animals that could take them in a blink of an eye. Like (as I'm sure you know) bears, hawks, eagles, etc. Don't let them out of your site. You have the one on a leash but when you were on the hammock, you weren't paying attn to him. The other cat wasn't on a leash -- not good. My friends lost their cats while camping...something horrible happened. They wouldn't say what. That's how bad it was
We are very aware of our surrounding when Lula comes outside. That’s why we have the tent where they mainly hang out together. Lula hates to be restrained so we try to give her some free time from time to time but we never let her wander on her own.
I hope you resolve your van issues but at the start there is so much cutting (editing) during the talking parts explaining the accident that it is distracting. I don't know if you feel you are blooping but sometimes an unedited (or limited editing) cut even where the odd word is tripped over is more watcheable. You don't have to be perfect when explaining how you feel. Take care.
Yeah, unfortunately the ad we did in this one wanted the whole thing within the first 5 minutes which resulted in cutting a lot of the video down. This wasn’t something we wanted to do honestly. We’ll probably post a video about the whole process since I think it’s valuable to share the experience we just had a deadline on this specific one before we could get the issue resolved.
We originally moved into our 2004 sprinter built for 13k in 2018. We ran a van building business for 4 years and built 12 different vans and were able to afford this van through that.
I don't like sering my baby Scarlett cry 😢. She seems so sweet. I'm curious what Ram has to say. I purchased my vehicle brand new snd its had several problems snd under warranty. Its nit getting it fixed, but when and who's qualifying these technicians
Okay….true story…. Teaching in a school that is 90% non English speakers. A note was composed by a teacher for a field trip. It said long pants only, no shorts due to shrubs and bugs. She had 14 or 15 parents calling the office wanting to know why their kids could not wear their underwear’s. Hint… be careful with your choice of translator.💕
It’s actually currently getting a new catalytic converter as well as cylinder head so there was actually quite a bit wrong with it. They are saying if this doesn’t fix it it will need an entire engine.

Not long! Honestly we like having it and it’s well worth a short shower to be able to conserve the water!

It’s an exhaust leak from the catalytic converter and bad O2 sensors causing a fuel/air issue and creating a misfire on cold start.
