I'm sorry but Green Book is not from Don Shirley's point of view. It's from Viggo's character. Look who they submitted for Best Actor, and who they submitted for supporting. The makers of the film believe that Don Shirley was there purely to Support the main story of Viggo's character.
That aside, Green Book is just not a good film, so generic, no risks, nothing special. It's consumerist Trash. Roma or The Favourite were the right choices.

Colman winning makes sense in retrospect. Narrative ASIDE ... sure, Close won SAG (maybe not by much, we'll never know), but that's ONLY actors in SAG. Colman won BAFTA (where an entire membership votes, including Academy crossovers). If you look at that, you could see how the 6,000+ voters OUTSIDE of the actors branch might've preferred Colman all along. No Academy voters in the HFPA or BFCA (and Colman won there, as well).

I think people were just blinded by narrative, Olivia had a Globe, a BFCA win, the BAFTA, a Venice win, LAFCA, NSFC, a ton of regional critics awards that didn't even nominate Glenn, and her film had 10 nominations including a ton from the tech voters. I've got a simple theory on Close losing out on BA; the overdue narrative was so strong and had so much time to build up, that it actually ate into itself. Voters felt like they were voting for Close not because of her great performance, but because of the narrative, and how many people like doing that. It sort of fits into the Green Book and BoRhap upsets, the voters gave a middle finger to assumptions and went with what was more straight-up enjoyable.

FYI, Irene Cara, Oscar Winner for Best Song “Flashdance... Oh What a Feeling” is Latina and not part of the Black Panther American women that won Oscars last night.
    - Her Father is Puerto Rican and Mother is Cuban American.
    - She was born in 1959, so I don’t know, if she identifies with the new PC term “Afro-Latina”
    - Her nationality is Latina, her ancestor roots do not run through the Jim Crow South, but through the Caribbean. This is why there was an outcry from the Black American Experience, when Zoe Saldana was cast to portray the great NINA SIMONE. Her struggle was rooted in being from the segregated south.

i think one reason behind what happened here is - while Olivia got all the europe member votes , the usa members votes got split between gaga and glenn , especially new younger members of usa may have gone for gaga , so the non europe vote split and olivia just beat glenn ,... while the other cause is imp -- Wife had single nomination and favourite 10 so maybe many people watched only one of them voted for olivia -this itself highlights a flaw , if in a major category like best actress, voters dont watch all 5 performances and still vote, think what happens in categories like documntry short? u must see all 5 nominees and then decide..otherwise the voting will be flawed .isnt it ?? ...i adore olivia, but i wanted glenn to win , to me this was the biggest upset of the year , not the best film..
glenn deserves much more than an honorary oscar...
im skeptikal about sunset boulevard = oscar win formula. . as floated by many , its not that simple.. first, it has to be made well, and the director is a rookie ( as a director ) ,, so we dnt know how the film will shape up... then how the competitions of that year will be...so many ifs and buts.. its tough for glenn to have so much momentum like this time.. god bless glenn , hope she gets her due.. ......i cant hate olivia , shes adorable ,so is olivias performance adorable absolutely.. but it would be better if somehow both won...

Will anybody say the obvious?! Preferential ballot is a disastrous method of selecting best picture. You don't want the most consistently voted '2nd best picture' or '3rd best picture' to win best picture, that's the same as saying "I'd be okay with this movie winning best picture" rather than "I strongly want this movie to win best picture as I believe in it". Just because you have 8 or 9 movies competing in a year, doesn't mean you need to have a system where all these movies feel 'relevant', I mean most of the makers and producers of these movies know, they don't have a shot in hell to win best picture. The system essentially elevates mediocrity. Stay with the system and you'll keep getting uninspiring 'best picture' wins like Shape Of Water and Green Book. 😒

It's so curious that only the white guys go to support Green Book, it's the only guys that don't see troubles with that big shit movie.

Why bet against Rami Malek? He won the Globe, SAG, and BAFTA. And only Russell Crowe lost the Oscar after winning those three awards, and that was because he sabotaged his chances by assaulting the person backstage who cut his BAFTA speech short.

Just because you have bad taste in film O'Neil, doesn't meant that I'm an internet troll simply because I don't share your overrated opinion of a really trite film.

Like seriously why the hell does the academy have to nominate or award every single role about a British monarch!? Olivia Colman, cate blanchett, Judi dench, Colin firth, Helena bonhan carter, Helen mirren, etc. can't you just vary it a little bit!?

I'm not surprise Green Book won. It's a nice feel good movie for white guys and liberals. Roma is already transcending, The Favorite and Bohemian Rhapsody are also better movies. Green Book was okay but very forgettable.
