- For the latest Rivian R1T pricing and information:
www.kbb.com/rivian/r1t/
Rivian is an American electric vehicle startup and their first production vehicle is this, the R1T pickup truck.
The 2022 Rivian R1T features an individual motor powering each wheel. According to Rivian it can tow up to 11,000 lbs, it rockets from 0-60 mph in as quick as 3 seconds…depending on the surface of course, and it’ll cover 314 miles with the base 135-kWh battery pack, according to the EPA. A larger 180-kWh battery back is in the pipeline for $10,000 that should deliver more than 400 miles of range.
Inside the Rivian R1T is filled with intriguing textures, subtle splashes of color, open-pore ash wood trim, and these carabiner-inspired elements on the seatback pockets. Nothing feels cheap, there are no unsightly gaps, the cabin conveys quality from top to bottom.
Other clever interior bits include a flashlight built into the driver’s door, this optional removable Bluetooth speaker that charges when stowed and doubles as a camp lantern, supplemental storage beneath the rear seats, a digital driver information screen plus a separate 16-inch screen on infotainment duty.
One unique feature of the R1T is its “gear tunnel”. It’s a secure 11 cu-ft hold for anything you don’t want flopping around in the bed. Plus, the doors can hold up to 400 pounds so you can stand on them or just sit and contemplate the universe.
You can also fill the Gear Tunnel with a $5,000 slide-out Camp Kitchen option complete with a 30-piece cookware set, an inductive stove powered by the truck’s battery pack, a 4-gallon water tank, and yeah, there’s a sink.
According to Rivian, the R1T’s 4 motors cumulatively produce more than 800 horsepower and 900 lb/ft of torque. If the novelty of gut-punch acceleration ever dims, know that Rivian’s truck is also a pleasure to drive at sensible speeds.
Leave the suspension in soft mode and the R1T’S ride quality is outstanding; controlled but never floaty. Key to that pleasing ride is an air suspension featuring adaptive dampers and an electro-hydraulic roll control system standing in for traditional anti-roll bars.
In concert the R1T’s suspension can vary ground clearance from 7.9 inches to 14.4 inches while delivering a plush ride or, depending on the drive mode, keeping the chassis taut and oddly flat in corners.
And yet, you can’t really appreciate its charms until you venture off-road. Over gnarly trails, the R1T just goes. If there’s traction to be found, the Rivian will find and exploit it.
As for price, you’ll need $67,500 to buy a base R1T Explore Package, not including destination charges. (Destination fee: $1,075) For perspective, the upcoming Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck will have a base price around $40k. Tesla estimates a similar base price for their upcoming single motor RWD Cybertruck.
While there are cheaper ways to drive electric the Rivian R1T offers a lot even in base form. Standard features include vegan leather seats…heated up front, 5 drive modes, all-wheel drive because 4 motors, an in-bed air compressor with a 20-foot hose to reach each tire, a manual tonneau cover, a panoramic roof that, while well tinted might leave desert dwellers wishing for a sunshade, and Driver+, which is Rivian-speak for their advance driver-assist system featuring 11 cameras, 5 radar units, and 12 ultrasonic sensors.
On the pricier $73,000 Adventure model we’re testing you’ll find ventilated front seats, an 18-speaker 1,200-watt Meridian audio system that truly undeniably bangs, and Gear Guard which utilizes a locking 8-foot cut-resistant tether system to help keep your stuff yours. The tethers are supplement by 360-video abilities to capture nefarious behavior. Also, the Gear Guard screen animation is adorable.
As for charging options you can use a standard household outlet if you got nowhere to be, or use a level 2 charger to gain 16-miles per hour charged. Rivian also sells a $500 wall charger that can add up to 25 miles of range per hour. And when covering distance, if you can find a 200 kW DC quick charger 20 minutes can add up to 140 miles of range.
Viewed strictly by the experience it provides, the Rivian R1T is extremely compelling. It’s quick, rugged, capable, and filled with clever usability. Not only is it a new kind of pickup truck, but it’s also a truly excellent pickup truck.
The Rivian R1T is a premium all-electric pickup truck with a high-tech interior, true off-road capabilities, and a refined on-road spirit.

Let’s not kid ourselves here, the long wait was definitely worth it. Rivian nailed this
I understand that, however as the first production electric truck to come to market, you can’t deny the interior, the distinctive exterior and all the small touches like the stovetop are all innovative in the truck segment.
i don’t know. i find the exterior to be cartoonish and a little childish looking. maybe it’s the headlights and the soft edges. doesn’t have a particularly mature or masculine aesthetic to it.
NOPE, RIVIAN before the DECADE is out will go BUST.
@@markplott4820 ford and amazon both invested heavily into Rivian so unlikely.
Perfect for Starbucks. ☕️

They nailed the interior. Simple yet elegant, luxurious, modern and sleek.
Looks really busy to me as a Tesla owner but I totally get that the Tesla interior isn’t for everyone either…
But really, that grille?
This is pretty damn impressive for a startup. I’m rooting hard for Rivian!
Yup we need competition from Tesla's bad quality control
Truck + 🐽= Rivian
RIVIAN wont even survive this DECADE.
@@markplott4820 well I mean- you don’t KNOW that. Man I hope your wrong. Haha
@@markplott4820 The new world order will be banning gas autos shortly so Rivian will be fine for at least a few decades. And a midsize truck will sell in Europe and Asia.
It's easy to root for these startups when they execute. These older companies stifle innovation with their bureaucratic layers and I won't even start on the historically bad dealership experience. It'll be interesting to see if Rivian can execute on all fronts (technology, manufacturing, sales and service).
Yeah sure kid, Audi, BMW, Volvo Mercedes all "stifle innovation"...😂😂
@@colors6692 Why did all of those companies wait until Tesla started making electric vehicles to get serious about it?
Unless rivian has a socialist belief or ideology then they will sell to the big players. And any innovation/invention/clever ideas will be sat on the shelf. This is how big corporations truly stifle innovation and invention.
My prediction : in 5 yrs from now ford will own it.
@@doscwolny2221 I'm having significant struggles with your premise that a small company that doesn't sell out to a bigger company has a socialist ethos. Logically that doesn't follow.
@@jayjuggrnaut yes it does it simple. We all want a comfortable life, so we sell out because the cards will be invariably stacked against us. That’s actually smart business. Build an idea , make it a threat and then sell. That’s what happens to the vast majority of successful startups. Unless you are passionately socialist( which most people aren’t) then you are in it for the immediate( your life time) gain.
One thing I'm liking about the Rivian, is that it appears like it will perfectly compliment an off grid large acreage property.
Excellent off roading, portable power, good enough towing for heavy equipment, and no need to worry about oil being nearby.
Assuming you have ample solar, you'd potentially be able to manage a large parcel of land without needing to rely on purchasing gasoline.
The truck is a home run as far as I'm concerned. Gorgeous interior, and TBH the starting price for what you get is respectable. You can get a Supercrew 4x4 Lariat PowerBoost F150 to the Mid 60's MSRP pretty easily, and I don't doubt the F150 lightning with similar specs will be the same price or more, and that's from an incumbent automaker, not a startup. Go Rivian, Go!
you do realize that the rivian is a MID-size right? As in more the size of a ranger
A starting MSRP of 70k for a mid size pick up is respectable? You also can't compare any full size pick up's to this, it's in a totally different class. The Ranger, Colorado, and Tacoma have a starting MSRP of 30-35k. Might as well compare this to a 3/4 ton pick up, which it bombs at. Even the full size picks up have a starting MSRP of < 40k.
Idk how much gas is where you are but the fuel savings alone warrant the price. It's essentially a luxury vehicle it's not meant to compete with the entry level riff Raff
My recent atrocious Ford customer service responses to my 2021 truck problems leaves my very uninterested in anything badged with a blue oval
@@MrValy128 electrons aren't free.
Okay that side storage door/area is genius. Applause them for adding this and thinking of this!
I was already impressed by it, but after seeing the slide out kitchen unit I am in love with it.
I agree. Looks like the golf bag storage in the luxury cars of the 1930s.
perfect place to store a dead body
@@mikeb1039 Not really. They sacrificed bed space and behind seat storage to offer that. Makes for a tiny 4.5' bed, same size as a Maverick or Santa Cruz. With the tonneau cover it has less cargo space than a Honda CRV. If you have small stuff you can break out into three cargo spaces, I guess that's fine, but that's typically not why pickups are bought. The Lightning is going to have way more usable space for a lot less money.
@@plmn93 I agree this is not a truck for anyone that uses there truck for work. While it is a nice truck and great for a startup the truck guys that go electric will stick with FORD I think.

Great job, this is first actual review I've seen on the Rivian! All the others have been advertorials at best. Some awesome features like the gear protection, and some "we'll have to see" aspects like the short wheelbase but ultra wide body on forest roads.
OK, that gear tunnel is one of the coolest things I've ever seen on a vehicle.
The McLaren F1 had something similar back on '97... Though that of course was crazy expensive then and an absolute art piece nowadays. Glad Rivian brought it back for the masses.
Not a new idea. GMC trucks in the 70s had this feature.

Longest KBB video ever... Love that they did a long video for once; I always feel like the 3-6min videos they produce are good... But not at all beneficial to the future buyers of the cars they review. Keep making them long KBB
We aim for brevity with KBB reviews but in this case there was a ton of stuff to discuss. I’m not sure I could’ve offered a proper picture of the R1T in a shorter run time. I’m glad you liked it!

@@MicahMuzio Thanks Micah!
I would venture to say that the investment came from Cox Enterprise, the parent company. They do something like $21Bln in annual revenue. Couple things for me. It’s extremely heavy. Published gvwr of over 8500 lbs and payload of around 1700 lbs means this thing is nearly 7000 lbs. plus I don’t trust the suspension to be reliable long term. Then there is the range. No low range means the high speed gearing will make the motors work harder and generate more heat. How far will it go off road? I can literally double my range with fuel cans.
.
It’s a cool truck, but I don’t see it fulfilling my needs. The 20 mile 4xe wrangler with low range for its motor gets about 3 miles of off road range per TFLs tests. So what does a 300 mile R1T get? 45 miles under similar conditions?

I’d love to get one. I’ve owned two TESLAs and love EVs! This is a great job by Rivian. Two things for me before I buy…need to know how servicing will happen and the quality of the truck….Also, not sure about that design feature putting the charging door at the front left. That’s a high percentage area for fender benders…
very cool-looking truck!! lots of nice features and that passthrough is amazing!! I'm going to miss the old gas engines though
This truck is a nod to the future and what is to come. I like it. My old trusty ford ranger will go out someday I wouldn't mind owning one of these if the price goes down.
This looks really promising. Not quite for me: I'd need a non-crewcab version with a longer bed (dirt bikes...), but I hope this succeeds and they can expand their line.
I've had 3 dirtbikes in about the same length bed. Just leave the tailgate down and put the gear in the back seat
Other than the front “headlights”, I love it.
I'm sure a lot of city dwellers will love it. Price, range and charge waits are the reasons these things will not be mainstream for a while. $60k+ is a quite pricey for a base mid sized truck. When you can get a normal base mid sized truck for half that and not worry about where can I charge it and how long will it take, these things will still be sitting on the lot.
A few more drone shots into the ad? I thought is was just an ad and not a real review. You guys give yourselves away.
Wow , seamless tailgate , it’s about time. Looks really useful…..I want one
I’m interested in seeing how well this lasts over time. Like most products, I like to wait for a second Gen product but this will be on my radar now
The first gen trucks will be bad. Riven will make quick improvements if they want to Survive. They are very well backed.
@@fatboy19831 Think they'll be that bad? Seems like they've really approached the development and manufacturing in a very effective way, imo.
@@nomercy4521 We won’t know how good or bad they are till they get in customers hands. Almost no manufacture gets it right the first year. It is how quickly they can improve. I saw many problems in the video. Still an excellent Truck.
This is such a cool truck. Feature rich and practical, especially for an electric truck. The only thing that would come close is the Ford F-150 Lightning, because the Tesla Cybertruck isn't a truck, just some random sheet metal strapped together by a drunk person. I only dislike the fact that all the HVAC and audio controls are in a touchscreen, but otherwise very cool.
An impressively complete package. Very exciting!
Whilst I have a cyber truck order in, this is damn impressive. Lots of great little touches. Colour me impressed Rivian. Well done.
That strong body and no paint on the CT clinches it for me though. No more dents, dings, and scratches, fading paint or delaminating clearcoat. That is a huge thing for me. But I ain't declaring it a winner as we pretty much know bugger all else about it. I'm dying for more info on it, and with these competition trucks coming out, I think it'll bring more CT information to us starved fans.
This is a pretty impressive truck, however, in my opinion, too many options when you are spending $70,000. How do you not include a full spare tire for $70,000? There were a couple of others mentioned here that should have been included as well.
I just watched another video and his did come with a full size, regular spare.
It's for rich people. They never complained about overpaying for anything
The truck does have a full size spare what are you talking about
@@kaliman198117ify Please replay the video and watch the Bed and Functionality section starting at 3:34. Then at 4:30, please read where it says "Full-size spare option (key word there) $600 - $800.
That is what I am talking about...
@@steve9021oh It very well might, but this video from KBB (who I think does their research) states the full-size spare is an option for $600-$800.
Idk what I love more, the truck or Micah. 😂
yo just checked out your page, gonna sub for the culture 👌🏾👌🏾
Micah your music is outstanding as always
I have to say, really well done video!
It's awesome no doubt; the problem is that for the price, a Lightning will be very well equipped PLUS it can power your house if ever needed and.....it's actual full size.
A Lightning with all these features for less than $70k with dealer markups? lol Not gonna happen. $80-90k. And vehicle to home power is coming for the Rivian R1T as well. Ford is a partner and they didn't want to step on their toes out of the gate. Rivian tows more than the Lightning too, so guessing they each conceded a feature.
@@dandroid761 Ford has explicitly said dealers are NOT allowed to mark up the Mach E or the F150 Lighting.
I support EV but the problem is the infrastructure.... these cars are limited with free roam range at this time and limited to being close to charging stations.... and going through pre-determined routes... we need more EV charging stations!
And faster charging. You can gas up in about 5 minutes, not sure how much time is needed at a EV charging station to get a full charge?
@@expsterm1 Probably over an hour for a full charge with a fast charger, and that's why I wont be joining the EV team anytime soon. I like EV's but it seems like electric cars are still years away from being as convenient and widely supported as gas powered ones.
@@chynacash3138 True that. Think about getting a Model 3 but I live in a townhouse without a garage so i will need to go to a public charging station. Sitting for 30 min or 1 hour to get a full charge seems too much. Maybe 30 min to get 50% charge is doable.
you realize it harms the earth more by messing with this stuff, right?
@@expsterm1 Dude, if you can gas up and get on the road with 3-4 people in less than 20 minutes you are a taskmaster. I would road trip with you any day. I feel like an F1 pit crew if I can get in and out of a stop in 20 with my tag-alongs.
