- Madonna's voice technique would change not once but twice during the 90s, starting with Dick Tracy and I'm Breathless down to The Girlie Show (tour) which she used growl and a darker voice, while Michael Jackson's voice largely remained the same, but unfortunately began to deteriorate due to long term use since childhood and health issues leading to the bigger presence of lipsync in the Dangerous World Tour and the HIStory World Tour
- Madonna cooled down her image with Bedtime Stories (album) with R&B recieved by a warm yet not 80s Madonna commercial reception and some critical praise, which paved the way to Something to Remember (compilation of all her ballads) which was an impressive success showing off Madonna's newly trained voice for the film musical "Evita" which would also become another one of Madonna's crown jewels and was the #1 soundtrack in the world during that time.
Meanwhile, Michael Jackson launched the HIStory album, with a side by side compilation album proving to be an irresistable product, critics liked the compilation album but HIStory Continues (the new album) recieved mixed reviews, largely in part because of the tone of the album being seen as aggressive, even being promoted with statues of Michael Jackson.
- Michael Jackson would later promote the HIStory album by going on the HIStory Tour, which ecieved mixed response due to the fact it was the same Bad and Dangerous tour, but updated, and because of the fact that 90% of the tour was lipsynced, and the 10% that was live showed a weak vocal performance due to MJ's health issues. In 1997 MJ released a remix album which became the best selling remix album of all time, surpassing Madonna's own "You Can Dance" remix album from the 80s, but also recieved mixed reviews because critics thought that the Teddy Riley collaboration at this point was proving to be outdated.
- In 1998, with her new "Evita" voice and with William Orbit now being her main producer, Madonan released Ray of Light, it brought techno and Madonna back into the mainstream and shortly after its release it became a commercial and critical achievement. It should be noted that Madonna did not promote Ray of Light on tour until 2001
- Michael Jackson had a gap between BOTDF and his new album Invincible (1997 - 2001) and Invincible was taking 3 years of production, and still is the most expensive album ever made (30 million dollars)
During this time, Madonna was about to go on tour for Ray of Light but then was recalled by Warner Bros to make a studio album instead, it resulted in another collaboration with William Orbit and a new collaboration with Mirwais, a french producer. Which resulted in Music (2000), which recieved good critical reception, especially for the sound of the album, and her return to number one in the United States since Like a Prayer (1989), in just 10 days Music sold over 4 million units worldwide and began preparations for the Drowned World Tour which would promote Bedtime Stories, Ray of Light and Music in one tour, with very little space left for her old hits.
- After 4 years, Michael Jackson finally released Invincible which was a collaboration of a lot of producers, and although it achieved good success overseas the US charts did not flinch, it was an album that was over produced, most expensive, and for the first time for Michael Jackson, underperformed due to lack of promotion and no tour.
- Michael Jackson faced a fallout with Sony after Invincible, and went in a seemingly neverending hiatus for almost a decade, during which Madonna had many tours and albums with various degrees of success. Since Michael Jackson began to face financial hardships he announced "This Is It" which was 50 shows at the O2 arena in July 2009, but unfortunately passed away before they could happen.
Instead, Madonna showed up at the O2 arena on July in Round 2 of her tour which was an extension of the Sticky & Sweet tour, and paid respects to Michael Jackson halfway during the show and during the rest of her tour.

this is not to say we can dismiss michael's global influence through mtv (i.e. he should be the first black artist to gain heavy rotation and really bolstered development on music videos) and philanthropy, but therein stands madonna's cultural impact in abolishing attitudes on sexual freedom and overall feminism (i.e. like a virgin, papa don't preach, erotica, sex, continual reinvention that dismisses naysaysers saying she's "old" and doubling-down on her "plastic surgery). it really goes to show that she's gone a longer way than michael has where she directly paved the way for contemporary artists' expression.
