F-16s vs. MiG-29s: The Battle for Ukraine's Air Supremacy Unveiled

  • The skies above Ukraine have become a battleground for two of the most iconic fighter jets of the Cold War era: the American F-16 Fighting Falcon and the Soviet MiG-29 Fulcrum. As the war grinds on, questions have swirled about the potential deployment of Western fighter jets, with the F-16 emerging as the frontrunner to bolster Ukraine's air force against Russian dominance.
In late March 2023, a significant milestone was reached when the decision was greenlit to permit the sale of pre-owned Mikoyan MiG-29 fighter jets from Slovakia and Poland to Ukraine. This move was presented as a game-changer, especially after the US announced its decision to allow Western allies to supply advanced fighter jets, including American-made F-16s, to Ukraine during the G7 summit in Hiroshima.

Russia has few Mig-29s. A modernized version, Mig-35 is used but more important fighter aircraft are descendants of the Su-27. Last year a Su-35 downed a Ukrainian Su-27 flying 271 km away.

You don't understand. If it's one on one, most high end fighter jets don't really have much advantage over the others (F-15s, Super Hornets, Typhoons, Su-35s, Rafael, etc).... especially if they're told all they have to do is out maneuver the other guys in a 1960 - 80s, classical dog-fighting situation.
But if you coupled the F-15, F-16, Super Hornet, Rafale, Typhoon, etc. with advanced avionics, electronics, radars, and the Patriot system ---- as all NATO capable fighter jets and bombers are --- Russia really is at a disadvantage.
Keep in mind, Russia has LESS capable high-end fighter jets & other supporting aircraft than does the SMALLEST branch of the US Armed Forces, the US Marines. But it's not only that. Those assets MUST be used to protect a nation that is 90% of the COMBINED lands of the US and China, the 3rd and 4th largest land on earth.
Russia doesn't operate on magic or alien technologies.
Hell, it has ZERO capability to produce any mid range to high-end semi conductor chips, both of which are 100% necessary in 100% of her sophisticated radars, electronics, avionics, missiles, machines, and aircraft.
China could produce up to 10mn - 7nm chips and those are mid-range-ish chips; but 5nm and beyond, China also can't produce them.
Russia still is using the CIA's 1950s and 60s shell company tactics, when it comes to getting its mid range to high-end semi conductor needs met.
(Remember, the CIA use shell companies in those decades to buy titanium from the USSR to build half a dozen or so SR-71 & a few other such experimental/spy jets, due to the lack of easily available titanium back then.)
The Russians are not stupid, as another highly educated NORTHERN EUROPEAN people (they are NOT Asians, Africans, or 3rd World people). But that also also is a TWO-EDGED SWORD situation: they also MUST have access to technologies that are used by the US and Western Europe, as well as Eastern Asian countries like South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan.
Again, Russia DOES NOT operate on magic or alien technologies.
100% of the advanced nations that build expensive, high-end machines and weapons systems.... they ALL must use advanced semi conducting chips. And Taiwan, ALONE, produces between 80% to 90% of the CURRENT HIGH-END CHIPS all advanced machines, military equipment, weapons systems, etc. used around the world.
The US, Western Europe, South Korea, and Japan combined produce up to 20% of those high-end chips that TSMC, Taiwan, is doing.
But the DUTCH are the only people who make, currently, the LASER MACHINE needed for the fabrication of those high-end chips that TSMC, Intel, Samsung, Sony, etc. are doing.
      ASML is that company.
Again, not everyone could just wave their own technological magic wand and whatever they want to do... could be done.
There always is a BOTTLE NECK in high-end technologies.
The countries and companies that control such technological bottle necks are USUALLY in the US, in Western Europe, or in Eastern Asian countries.
Russia doesn't have free or easy access to THOSE HIGH-END TECHNOLOGIES, her high-end military assets AIN'T GONNA BE 10 - 20 years "more advanced than Western" stuff, as Trump's MOSCOW friend, Comrade KGB Col. Putin, off-hand-ishly asserts.
That's just not how technology or reality works.
Again, Russian things like the mid 1900s AK-47s, the 1960-80s Su-35, etc. are VERY GOOD.
But they aren't the most advanced, most up to date tech stuff in the world...

The F-16s are capable of delivering nuclear weapons and that is the main threat the Russians are worried about. If they are used as air support for Ukrainian troops, they risk being destroyed by Russian air defenses. In any case, the Russians can destroy them on the ground, once they track them back to their bases. Or the MIG-31 can hit them from 100 miles away. The F-16 face steep odds.

    1) F16s will go against S400, Su 30, Su35 which are much better than the Mig 29
    2) Dog fights are rare to happen in real life, the Russians can see and engage the F16 from a much farther range ...

The German guy flew this late 1980's version against F-14's, F-15's, F16's and F18's at the time.
The biggest criticism of the Mig-29 was it's lack of range and the avionics were not the latest available. But it outflew all four US aircraft and was the best dogfighter bar none.

I love the F16. I grew up watching them from my backyard. I have spent 40 years of my life focused on that platform.
The F16 isn't suitable for the climate in Ukraine. There is nothing the F16 can't do. It can ground pound like the A10 and dominant the air space. But to do this, the F16 requires a massive amount of support. The radar is good but small. Without AWAC support, the F16 can only see about 60 miles at best on flat ground.
The others massive problem is range. The F14 needs AA refueling because it can only hold 7900 pounds of gas internal. Thats about 1.5 hours of very high easy flying. In a loaded combat situation it can consume 8000 pounds of gas in 15 min. This is why you almost never see a F16 without external baggs. The maximum amount of gas with 3 full baggs is only 140000 pounds of gas. This adds about 50% more range.
So if the f16 is stated in Kyiv it will be out of gas by time it gets to the combat zones.

If Russia modernizes its MiG-29properly and at least 100 F-16s, there is no chance in air combat. The MiG-29 was built for dominance on the nabowhile the F16 is a multi-functional aircraft, of course you can't compare the MiG-29 from the 80s with the modernization of the MiG-29, the MiG-29 in the best version had zuk radar that is not bad but it is still a little outdated, in addition to ZUK radar there is also H019 both versions of radar have their own modernizations that go for ZUK from ZUK M through ME and all the way to ME 3, and as for H019 here we have E, EM and MS modernizations that were done very quickly and easily until 2016 and, in essence today it is very simple to reinforce the radar and these versions of modernization are mainly made for export, which gives radar with a range of 120 km to 160 km, which is not so bad but I am also sure that Russia today for its army can determine it much better and in We're not talking about the same plane anymore. If the F-16 and MiG-29 radars are more or less the same range and the possibility is there. There is no longer a dilemma which plane is better, we all know that the R 77, R 60, R 73 and 27 rockets are repeatedly modernized and proven good missiles the only thing that remains as a question of whether a single-engine aircraft can fight a twin-engine? We all know that there will be all the other Aircraft of the Russian Air Force as well as the air defense systems?!?!

I very much doubt they are going to have the look down shootdown capabilities. The US will not allow that tech to be shot down and recovered by Russia. All fighter jets in this war are very vulnerable to both SAM and Air to Air missiles. Both sides must carefully pick their opportunities to send their precious experienced pilots into dangerous skies. The F16s give Ukraine some more modern electronics and radars over their old Mig-29s. Neither side will be looking for fighter-against-fighter matchups.

I'm not even going to comment on the fact that there is no way Russia will send old MiG29s on F16s... Sending F16s to Ukraine is like bringing a knife to a gunfight.

The F16 block 70 has superior radar to any Russian fighter including Su57. The Aesa on the F16 is equal to the F35s radar on the block 70 version. Even the Block 52 version is comparable to the Su 35M or better than Russia's Pesa Radar.
